Wouldnt that be great? I was hoping NaturalPoint would have done a camera that didnt require you to wear anything by now, the technology is there. I tried to make my own with Kinect for windows but the latency wasnt good enough and it had trouble tracking me when the room wasnt brightly lit (I havent tried Kinect 2 yet and wasnt planning to buy it because I got the rift instead :joystick:).

Running a single 27" @ 1080p right now and really curious if getting another 27" but at 1440p would make it easier or harder to spot ground targets and birds in the air with labels off? Right now I don't have the desk real estate to get an HDTV just for flying and I see quite a few people do that, so I was thinking the lower resolution might make it easier when blown up large enough and I might be throwing money away and getting less FPS to boot if I up my resolution...

So everyone saying zoom is not working when using the built in Rift mode (and not the stereo hack): Are you saying we cant use a zoom button such as the mouse wheel to zoom and that physically leaning forward / back using the rift's motion tracking is whats non-functional OR did they disable the zoom function via controllers such as the mouse wheel entirely for some odd reason?

You would think that since this comes with a pretty in-depth SDK, filled with commands for depth and face tracking even using near mode (allowing the windows kinect to operate much closer than the xbox version) and since microsoft also makes directX, then it wouldnt be a stretch to make them work together. Personally as a simmer who plays on a projector, I'm awfully tired of my track IR camera blocking the view of my screen and casting a shadow on it (I'd put the track IR behind me if my cockpit seat wasnt blocking the IR sensors). I am dying for head tracking that works without having to be in precise alignment with IR sensors positioned a few feet away.

Has anyone bought a kinect for windows? If you are a student it is pretty affordable: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/en_US/pd/productID.246711100/search.true I really would like to try it out but only have basic programming skills. If it comes with drivers and software that allow you to map head movements to direct X axis' then it shouldnt be too hard.

Advice Needed on Wireless Mouse
Vullcan replied to barra733's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I've used all the high end wireless mice, both gaming and professional. Just recently I tried out the razer mamba to see what the hype was with it and discovered it really wasn’t worth the $130 price tag. Logitech mice are tops, you'll be hard pressed to find flaws with them. I recently settled on the Logitech G700. I believe it has the strongest / fastest updating signal between the microscopic nub you plug into your USB port and the mouse. It fits (my) hand well and it has more buttons than you can shake a stick at. You can plug it in via the USB cable, and it takes AA batteries. I used to use 1 AA battery every 2 weeks with my older logitech MX1000/1100, but now that im trying to be more "green" I've been using the (sanyo?) enloop rechargeable batteries. The mouse comes with one installed but I've found using a $20 charger / battery pack that I got from costco to be ideal. With docking stations, I found that I sometimes forgot to put the mouse back on the cradle, and having it go dead in the middle of a gaming session was no joy. I like having a stack of 4 always recharged batteries at the ready, and with the new enloop batteries they really last a long time. Nothing could separate me and the G700... no other wireless mouse can touch it right now, IMO. -
Its not a wonder product though, even after lots of tweaking I still find I am unable to get it to pick up the signal when looking in a couple of the extreme corners. The best product will be something like kinect, that can track your head without having to rely on LED's strapped to your head.

I was able to print the manual at home for about $20 in nice paper / ink (black and white) and then i took it to fedex office and they bound it and put a plastic see-through front and back cover on it for $5 (had it ready for me in 1 hour!) Its really nice and while its not professional print house quality it doesnt look too cheap either and is really sturdy. Its also leaps and bounds above hole punched 3 ring binder style manuals. just a thought, and if you dont have any office fax / print / copy center in your area then i apologize for bragging about how easy it was :(

You realize that DCS A-10 is #5 on the list of games for 2011?

I found that sitting any closer required too much turning your head just to see one part of the screen. Its like going to a movie theater and sitting in the front rows with your neck craned up at the sky, it makes it less enjoyable even though its "bigger".

And here we were waiting for Beta 6... They were probably laughing it up while we whined in the forums, knowing they would release it just a week later. Nice job ED!

The HOTAS is great as everyone else has said, the only real downside being the bricked throttles (I had this happen to me). The pedals are overpriced, its the same as the older saitek pedals just with a new face. I was also forced to set a 50% deadzone for them to work properly in DCS a10 which is unresonable IMO. The older saitek pedals did not have this problem, I dont know how many other people are affected by this. You can mount the track IR behind you by going into the track IR software settings and setting the rotate camera option to 180 degrees, then all you have to do is mount your track clip pro backwards or put your hat on backwards and align it properly. Its great to not have the track IR in your field of view but still have it work like its supposed to.

My setup was designed so that I could disconnect the USB cord and slide it into the corner of the room when I wasn't flying, which keeps the lady of the house happy as she can still watch movies from the couch. Forgive my poor photography skills which do nothing to represent the actual image quality on the wall (it looks just like a HDTV basically, only bigger). 1920x1080 resolution at 120". I have a buttkicker now under the chair which really adds to the immersion. The hardest part was rigging up trackIR as you cant place it in front of you. I was able to get it to work to the side and behind me mounted on the railing using the software's built in camera rotation setting.

A 1080p TV is no more "HD" than a monitor that can output 1920x1080 pixels, and I've had computer monitors and video cards pushing that resolution in the late 90's, certainly no one i knew had a TV capable of doing that then. The point is TV's always have been and still currently are far behind computer monitors in terms of how high a resolution they can push, and that means that a computer monitor will have a higher definition image as long as the source material is of that quality or higher.
-
1080p, aka 1920x1080 is fine for this sim (or any game for that matter) but computers unlike consoles are capable of displaying far greater resolutions than that. a "full HDTV" will never live up to what a computer monitor LCD can display with current technology. Computer LCD's have been "HD" long before 720 / 1080p came about, and now they are "beyond HD".

Did you patch your game from beta 3 to beta 4? Most of us flying online did a full beta4 install and the two are not compatible

Buttkicker Gamer 2 thoughts?
Vullcan replied to razorseal's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Soviet, Can you state why you reccomend two sound cards to use it fully? Can one not just use the "subwoofer out" portion of their existing sound card? Thanks! -
Yes, pushing both toe brakes = W key. I also noticed when you push the W key its not "on / off" it slowly applies full power as if you were slowly pushing down on both toe brakes at the same time.

Thats usually never the case Ranger, as steam is the copy protection.

TrackIR freezing after hibernate
Vullcan replied to SuDepp's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I dont have to power off my PC to fix this, simply unplug and plugin the camera works fine. -
how are toe brakes configured in axis tune?
Vullcan replied to hannibal's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I noticed in that thread it said that in windows device manager they always return to 0 and its just an in game problem. I disagree with my combat pedals, even in windows device manager they sometimes return to a point other than 0. -
The first joystick with hydraulic feedback

Wow 450 euros? Not when the stick looks like that buddy, and if it feels anything like how it looks... -
So I just got these in and the rudder is great, but the toe brakes are all out of whack. Windows control panel is reporting them always at 50% - 100% activation, even after calibrating. I got this to go away sometimes after I push the pedal a few times, but it comes back. In game its showing 10-35% activation randomly, and when I let go of the pedal it RARELY returns to 0% and often returns to a random point between 10-45% activation. And the saitek forum has been closed for registrations for months because of some "spamming" problem. How about they open the forum and get a moderator like every other forum? I will be calling them Monday, if its a problem with the hardware I hope they have the cojones to ship a new set without me having to send mine back first and be rudderless for weeks. At a $200 price point, they better. Its like the TM Warthog throttle problem all over again! New product, tons of bugs!
