  1. Sorry LastRifleRoun, but my carat stays in place just fine when I yaw and trim change heading and trim, hover and trim and whatnot. I can trim all over the place, change heading what I want, but the carat stays on the waypoint. ;)
  2. How much altitude do you gain when agressively decellerating? Even with thottle closed the aircraft has so much energy to bleed from high speed cruise that I seem to be unable to hold altitude properly when performing an agressive stop.
  3. :P Yeah, all those switches man. And what do you think of the flight model?! BS v2 for sure. I shudder thinking what high-fidelity stuff BF 1943 will bring! :P
  4. Which is nicely modelled in BS! :)
  5. Exactly, a common aviation term is to 'step on the ball' to center it.
  6. Shhh! As long as you don't tell, we won't either!
  7. Thanks for the input. Great info!
  8. Sadly that's the state of many reviews nowadays, but that doesn't mean reviews are supposed to be subjective. A review should plainly give a description of facts, pro's and cons, achievements and duds, but all from a general point of view, or maybe I should say a comparing point of view. (this might get lost in translation ^^) Never from a personal perspective or a 'I wanted it to have...' point of view. Too often products are rated by personal preference these days and if you regard that as the standard for reviews, sobek, then you're the victim of 'herding effect'. For the record, I am not saying the review in this topic is only based on personal taste, that would rip my comments massively out of context. I merely think a review should focus on fact and that's that. To prevent hi-jacking I suggest you PM me if you want to have a further discussion with me about the issue.
  9. You seem to miss the point, sobek. It's not about wether the statements by ED should be regarded as facts or not by the community. It's about reviews stating facts. If something is not yet a fact, leave it out of a review. But like I said that's my POV and you can disagree. :P
  10. That's incorrect. They did make one, but due to some mixup the french language version disks were replaced by english ones.
  11. Doesn't this qualify as 'being the plan', rather than being confirmed? As such it shouldn't be presented in a review as a fact. I might be nitpicking here, but I also know how 'sensitive' the sim community is for getting facts vs fluke. Anyway just my point of view. You can do with it as you please of course. :P
  12. Are formation lights switched entirely off IRL? They have a nice brightness switch so I assumed they were switched to the lowest brightness setting to keep pilots oriented towards eachother while in flight.
  13. Is that confirmed or is it 'the plan'? That's the point. If you put this in reviews as a fact people will get their expectations up. If it is already confirmed as a fact then I stand corrected. I missed that obviously. Can you link me to a statement?
  14. AFAIK the new engine will by introduced by one of the new modules. There's been no word on wether the new engine will be installed for BS over time. The plan is to have all modules MP compatible, but that's not the same thing. I would remove this bit if i were you. It causes people to have, perhaps invalid, expectations. Besides you give the impression that this is work in progress and will be released soon, which is not known yet. Just to prevent flamewars I would edit this out. ;) Also I don't think the intro is relevant to BS. Asking wether it will dethrone Falcon 4.0 is not relevant as they are different simulators. Falcon is a fixed wing combat sim and BS is a rotary wing combat sim. Future modules of DCS might be asked that question though. If you want to make a relation in some way call it the coming back of the Jane's Longbow era or something. :) Just some constructive criticism. Otherwise a fine review!
  15. Is the 'accumulated rudder trim' error related to keep trimming without resetting the trim, because I would imagine that's not really an error, more a pilot's error if you want to call it one. I don't seem to have any problems with rudder trim. Just press the reset button and trim for the new state of the aircraft to trim it properly. Also beware that the trim only trims after 'releasing' the trim button, not while 'pressing' it. Maybe I don't understand the point in this thread, if so, please enlighten me. ;)
  16. I guess you meant 'low' instead of 'slow'? ;) Great advice here in the thread. Keep it up, guys!
  17. I have no problems with the yaw damper and if anything a damper should dampen / soften the input from the control surface. If you have erratic yaw problems the damper should make things better, not worse. ;) So turning it off in a critical flight phase does not sound like a good idea to me.
  18. Centering the ball is only an aerodynamic indicator. Like Ethereal says it is no indication of wether you're flying straight over the ground. If you have the ball centered it means that the aircraft is properly trimmed for most aerodynamic efficient (for the lack of a better term) flight. What many people have difficulty with understanding is that in flight any aircraft is dependent on the wind. Picture a column of air moving over land by the wind. The aircraft will move along with this column of air. By means of control input and propulsion the aircraft is able to travel in a specific direction, but still the wind has impact on its movement. Say you want to travel to Magnetic North without wind. You fly a heading North and the aircraft will fly there. The nose is pointed to the same direction as the direction of the track you fly over the ground. Now we have a stiff wind from the east, trying to push the aircraft westward. We still want to fly to the north, but if we just fly heading north, the wind will push us westward causing us to fly a sort of spiral or arc over the ground if we keep pointing our nose to the north, much like the flow of water in your fountain in the bathroom. Eventhough we do not fly a straight line it is very much possible to have the ball centered because the aircraft is flying aerodynamically correct. If, however, we want to fly in a straight line over the ground to the north with a stiff wind from the east we need to correct for the wind and point our nose a bit into the wind, so a bit more to east. The effect of the wind on our track is called drift and the correction on heading we make to adjust for the wind is called wind correction agle - WCA. The correct heading to fly is heading +/- WCA to get the required track over the ground from A to B. Here we also have the ball centered in flight. Centering the ball is not related to navigation directly, but more an indicator of the way the aircraft is being flown. The statement True vs Magnetic Heading / Track is related to the reference of which North we use. The true north of the earth (northpole) is not in the same location as the magnetic north our compass points to. The magnetic north also moves slightly over time to make matters worse (that's why we have variation changes).
  19. Sure but how's the given data relevant if everyone's using different parameters to do the exercise? That's the same as asking for brake distances in a car without telling people what car to use. Some will try it in a truck, others in a pickup still others in a lightweight sportscar. ;) Back to the heli, like I said, if I just try to get the quickest time from full speed to hover regardless how, I get vastly superior times as to do that while maintaining altitude. :) While I did see the 1000 ft / m (whatever) altitude I just wanted to inquire wether that should be a constant value during the maneuver or just the starting and ending altitude.
  20. I know, but my point was that there's no use in posting times without a specific set of boundaries. :)
  21. Is the point to keep your altitude within a specific range of the target altitude or are you allowed to veer off into the air and only stop time when you're back on the target altitude? In other words; is the point of this to time how you can go from full speed into a hover while maintaining altitude or just to get to a hover from full speed by any means possible. My time differs a LOT between these two. So for uniformity's sake I'd say you should remain within 500 feet (around 200m) of your altitude while performing the maneuver.
  22. I like that term! But I'll only pay monthly if it has BS's fidelity for all aspects of the game. Man, just imagine how large this game would be, how much study time you would need to be able to get proficient in all aspects... *shudder* That would be a second job, I imagine!
  23. Enjoy, although I think its not Santa who gave it to you. You might think twice before you shoot a bunny next time while hunting or... if you never hunt then think twice before you run over a bunny with the car next time. :)
  24. I think you're not quite correct here, EtherealN. GPS is now, in fact, a commonly used navigation instrument in commercial navigation. Our 737 for example, first uses the GPS signal and only reverts to IRS navigation when it does not have the GPS anymore. Also there are procedures like GPS approaches slowly entering service around the world on airports. Mind you these are different that RNAV (Area Navigation by means of 'fixes' (google that term ;) ) procedures. EDIT: Now I have thought about it, I am doubting my statement above. It might very well be that the main navigation system is still the IRS and it only gets a position update from the GPS to correct for drift the system has over time, especially in areas with low VOR (that's a navigation beacon which sends out beams all around (360 degrees) so you can ride one of those beams (called radials) to navigate to a point, the beacon itself or another beacon for example) coverage. I'll look it up in my manuals and report back.
  25. It's probably because the TIR profiling program has priority on the TIR itself when you have the tracking/heads windows open. They are used for debugging and testing your setup. It might be that when they're open they somehow block comms from the program to the device because it thinks you're still editing a profile instead of playing a game... or something like that. :P
