  1. if you switched to EXP and then zoom it further with DMS up you can identify targets really well from really far away
  2. i respect your personal preference. For me it's not a question eye vs TGP. I still need the best out of my eyes even with the TGP in many cases. I don't see any reason for not carrying the TGP apart from some machismo ;-) in a war environment i do not feel motivation to ditch anything that helps me to prevail because of some sportsmanship, really. Only thing to restrict me should be Geneva
  3. thanks for the updated start up checklist. Don't need the laptop with the manual anymore. Appendix is really useful! +1
  4. For armored targets you should use D/H as they have an armor-piecing shaped charge warhead. The bigger warheads are penetrators and are used, as you suggested, for bunkers or structures, but also ships. And yes, they do more area damage, but you wouldn't use a maverick just for troops or soft targets. There may be rare exceptions of course (high priority soft targets that can't be hit with bombs). Sinky and Ryrarr both made the correct statements about the CCD vs IR seekers (cost/resolution). On day missions in clear weather I usually carry 2 D's and 2 H's. I never fly without the TGP so usually the H's kinda did the job so far for me. Sinky's screenshots give you an idea of the difference of resolution, with a moving picture the difference is bigger i think.
  5. The TM Warthog is as good a replica of the real A-10C hotas as you could demand. It has a paddle which the real A-10C doesn't have but it's rather a feature than a shortcoming. I believe you mean the saitek x65. It isn't a A-10 replica. Interesting is that it's force controlled like the stick in the real F-16. The A-10C uses the F-16 stick but it's a classic mechanical stick that actually moves. If you've got the money, get yourself the TM warthog, especially if you plan to use it for DCS: W. If you like the fancy force control stuff, get the x65. x52 (pro) is a nice all-round stick with great value. you can read the tests on simhq.com, they're fairly comprehensive. TM Warthog test on simHQ saitek x65 test greets
  6. are there any status updates on the campaign? is it still in dev? can't wait for this ;-)
  7. kinda sure betty's also bothered by brakes IRL. wouldn't be in dcs if not.
  8. have a look at the pitot heat switch? it's fairly chunky and easy to see whether in on or off position. i don't think airbrake indication would be of any use as you adjust the airbrake "as needed". don't hassle the hog
  9. if i'm not totally mistaken the emergency brake can only be engaged once, as it draws compressed air from a dedicated cartridge. so shouldn't be used unless there's a real emergency
  10. maybe ED could implement a money system. like you get paid after each mission depending on it's success. you could earn further money by selling interviews to the press or playing poker at the o-club after the missions. then you have to buy your ordnance before missions. in between missions you can take the UAZ for a ride, drive through the streets of batumi and buy apartments or fancy clothes. even a hotdog in case you were hurt.
  11. ...the ugly word "passive" doesn't give the cbu 97 any credit for actively using a passive IR sensor in order to get the direction where it actively shoots the copper to... :book: ..but then the wind corrected version is relying on the plane's INS data (sounds rather passive) to actively steer itself to where we get back to discuss the active, passive or semi-active role of the skeets... :smartass: ...using its active radar altimeter also seems to be quite an active activity to me...
  12. am i correct that HOF in INV stat screen is ft AGL as the skeets have a radar altimeter (wonder what those thingies cost)
  13. i don't think i would've bought a-10c if it was priced $120 in the first place. having played nearly 100 hours meanwhile and spending the same amount of time reading the manual and the secondary literature, i would. I would rather go and buy black shark or FC2 than wasting money on another license i never use. If ED had a paypal donation button where i could donate a few spare bucks (like i do to wikipedia once a year and some indie devs i like) I would probably do it once in a while after a hilarious mission.
  14. i'm downloading at 300 kb/s too. strangely I'm uploading with 200 kb/s only, should be 600 (5 mbit upload). no speed limits set, ports open and working
  15. $60 shouldn't be that hard to afford compared to the cost of a suitable rig, screen, a hotas, TIR and all that fancy hardware you need to enjoy the sim. my 2 cents
  16. can you further explain this? how have the flags changed? won't be able to try it out before tomorrow night i guess
  17. I guess GG's just tired of hearing that building a dynamic or semi-dynamic campaign would be (relatively) easy or trivial thing ;-) don't take it personally. we have to give him credit that he's still following the thread and takes part in the discussion. Given the improvement from beta4 to final and the fact, that ED policy now tends to deliver surprises rather than promises (having had to cut battlefield commander, jtac mode and nevada map after feature-locking the beta), we might as well get a fully dynamic campaign exceeding any expectations in the next patch  i think they're going the right way in carefully improving all aspects of the game. they will continue improving the mission editor adding more random stuff and hopefully improve the campaign builder adding some inter-mission dependencies and the thing will slowly evolve into something with more re-playability
  18. any word on the final manual? i can't wait to finally have it printed
  19. wow thanks for the 1080p upload. the gun sound is totally awesome, also the terrain looks beautiful. nice mav explosions too.
  20. yeah. as i had only flown falcon 4 i never bought one until started with dcs: a-10 recently. now i don't like to fly f4 anymore ;-)
  21. wrong it's not as if it's a picture ON the glass. as has been said a million times before ;-)
  22. i didnt even think of that problem. it's the more obvious one though ;-)
  23. this has been extenisvely discussed a couple days before http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=66627 it has been said numerous times that HUD is projected into infinity for obvious reasons. if you don't understand it, hold a piece of paper on your window and now read it while looking to whats outside. your eyes have to change focus constantly which tires you within a minute. that's what it would be like if it was projected focusing the glass itself. now look at something at the horizon outside your window. move your head a foot forward. does it become bigger?
  24. yeah, thats if you're a us citizen
