Let’s just say the hornet has the ‘standard everything’ you could learn in a modern US fighter plus carrier ops. Pick the others for variety, like harrier for vertical takeoff, tomcat for flight characteristics, mirage for an European flavour, thunder for a pleasant surprise, viper for its bubble canopy and efficiency.

Is the F-18 module a good start for a complete newbie?
GrEaSeLiTeNiN replied to eydlehoms49's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Depends what you mean by newbie. Never played any flight sims before? If so, try DCS Flaming Cliffs first (simpler with non clickable cockpits). If you’ve played other flight sims before, get the flagship FA-18C. You might have issues with the ‘finicky’ radar but it’s a good module. One thing you must be aware of when getting into DCS is that many modules are Early Access with varying levels of incompleteness at launch and with no clear deadline for completion. It can take years before your fully paid product is completed as advertised. -
As in title. I'm afraid the Virpil Alpha on WarBRD base might be too high when placed on a table top as I won't be doing chair or below table mounting. The Virpil setup would cost more but not much more and would save me having to get pedals since the Alpha is a twist stick. The VKB NXT would have been perfect for me if only it had a matching throttle which I read might never appear, or at least no one knows when it would come out. The Warthog with pedals is of course tried and tested in DCS and would be great too. But does anyone know if TM is coming out with a new HOTAS soon? What would you recommend? I fly mostly modern - F18 and F16 and possibly the upcoming Apache. Thanks in advance

Wasn't fixed in the most recent patch... fingers crossed though.

I was hoping the most recent patch would address it, nope...

IRL, do F/F donors contribute trackfiles (bottom HAFUs) to the SA, AZ/EL and RDR ATTK pages ONLY if they are in STT? The concept of D/L and MSI would seem to suggest otherwise? I can see how an STT would be more likely a hostile or correlated but I would assume it's about sharing whatever your radar has picked up for correlation with other F/Fs.
-
That would be one glaring bugged key A2A feature of a so called sim.

Thanks for the explanation. So LTWS is quite easy to understand when you explain it as a 'display option' or 'preview'. I'm beginning to get the concept of MSI more clearly as you have explained above, and as the name MSI implies. Has ED indicated when they will fix the MSI feature in the Hornet? Thanks again.
-
Thanks. So if I understand correctly, the 'multi-source/sensor' in MSI actually excludes onboard and offboard radar contacts, the latter being left to LTWS to 'unveil'?
-
Yes, single player. All tasks were set as "Nothing" and Weapons Hold as I just wanted to observe the various HAFUs. I'll test again with weapons free. But am I right to say the correct implementation is that the (AI) F/F donor should donate the bottom HAFUs even without an STT lock so long as they pick up the contacts on their radars? I mean it seems to work for AWACS, just not F/Fs. Thanks UPDATE: Tested with a weapons free F/F donor and the bottom HAFU of F/F's target showed up on my SA but not on my RDR ATTK. Implementation is kind of bugged I guess.

Hi, I noticed the following in the RDR ATTK display (updated OB, 12 Jun 2021): When D/L, RWR and MSI are turned on but LTWS is turned off, RWS bricks and RWR contacts show up but not Offboard donor trackfiles, unless LTWS is turned on as well. Is this correct? My understanding is that LTWS simply "unveils" the Onboard trackfiles inherent in RWS bricks (see Wiki) and should be independent of Offboard trackfiles. Meaning RWS bricks are decluttered Onboard trackfiles and Offboard trackfiles should show as long as MSI and D/L are turned on (without having to turn on LTWS). The Wiki page also says DCS has got some of it wrong. Any comments? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I was designing a MSI/LTWS/SA/HAFU practice Mission with various friendly and hostile fighters just flying around to be detected by my F18. No AWACS. I have a F/F donor that shows up on my radar and SA page as a circle with a side dot. But it will not contribute any bottom half HAFUs to my radar or SA pages. Meaning it does not appear to be picking up the hostiles flying around and hence is not "donating". Do I need to do certain things in the advanced waypoint settings to make it work? Does the F/F donor have to be from the same country or same flight? When I add in an AWACS, I get SURV tracks (2/3 size) and also the bottom HAFUs for my contacts which I presume were contributed by AWACS. But without AWACS, no bottom HAFUs at all even with an F/F donor and wingman in the vicinity. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

reported earlier Cluster JSOW does no damage to landed AI Aircraft

Jun 2021 - on a related note, the JSOW-A has no effect on tanks right? I couldn't destroy any tanks with unlimited JSOW-As launched at them. -
Extremely long DCS closing time!
GrEaSeLiTeNiN replied to Predator-78's topic in Game Performance Bugs
As of today, latest open beta, I have disabled Run in Win 8 Compatibility mode for the DCS.exe. The DCS load and exit times are back to normal now (fast). Win 8 compatibility was used to prevent crashing after restarting missions in ME. But this seems to no longer be a problem at least with the Persian Gulf map that I tested. With Win 8 compatibility on, load times (after a certain recent patch) became significantly longer (at DCS logo and ME/mission start) and exit DCS times were quite long (black screen before going to Desktop). I'm glad it's back to normal without Win 8 compatibility. (Sys: Ryzen 5600, RTX 3070, 32G RAM) -
Couldn't get ATFLIR to auto track moving target even up close. Use to work just fine. Now it's bugged. As of today latest version of Open beta.

I actually find the F18 SLAM-ER easier to control at terminal than the similar one in JF-17. Don't try to control it when it is doing it's profile run but near the end when it is headed for the target. Hold TDC down and move TDC to steer crosshairs over desired target and release TDC depress. It locks up automatically and there is no need for further steering.

thanks, as reviews have indicated, pretty hot.

I was also thinking of getting the 5800X but heard it runs very hot. Would anyone recommend the cooler i7 11700K instead?

Looking for a new laptop
GrEaSeLiTeNiN replied to striker101818's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I was also considering a laptop but as others have said, you need the top end laptops such as those from Asus. You would do better with 1080p as 1440p would be more demanding. And for the price you pay, you could get much better specs in a PC. That said, the PC cost will add up once you factor in a good monitor to match. -
Gaming keyboard and mice
GrEaSeLiTeNiN replied to Django's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Old thread but I have a question. I was thinking of getting the Corsair K55 budget keyboard which has 6 (G1-G6) macros which can be programmed using a single dedicated key (MR) on the keyboard itself, ie, no software needed. But will such macros work in DCS? If it doesn't then I would rather just get the Razer Cynosa G2. -
Probably have to depend on YouTubers while in EA

Had so much fun with the FCR in LB2 - pop up behind a hill, scan targets, back down, hellfires away! Hope they don't take too long with the FCR.
