I hope this means we are closer to release! :D

good point I was not aware of the Chinook's lethal past. Maybe it didn't make the news like the Osprey did. So I guess I need to make a blanket statement about troop-carrying aircraft. Get the bugs out before committing troops' lives in them. It's a waste of lives otherwise. How's that? Flyby PS I know things can't be perfect when people design anything, and that deaths may follow. Fixes come in time (recall the British Comet's history). I just think it's tragic to lose troops lives in such accidents.

my 2cents I don't like that this aircraft killed Marines due to crashes caused by "teething problems". Problems should have been worked out before putting troops on them. For my money the Osprey is the swing-axle Corvair: unsafe at any speed. Now it's in Iraq. More news to follow. Flyby

Reasoning for the Ka-50 cannon mounting.

thanks for the corrections and feedback guys! :D great stuff, and insight to flying a gunship as opposed to a fast mover. Nice forum, eh? Flyby -
Reasoning for the Ka-50 cannon mounting.
Flyby replied to Flanker15's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
In the BS sim, I doubt there will be a FAC to hand off targets. I don't think we'll be able to hand targets off to one another either. That's where it may get interesting. A single-seat gunship flying pretty much autonomously insofar as weapons deployment goes, unless there is a flight leader giving direction. But if he's in a BS too then he can't do a lot of coordination of forces once the fight is on unless he reamins at standoff distances. That's not good for gameplay, imho. Then I suppose it's every pilot for him(her)self. I think the Black Shark sim is going to be a real challenge with it's advanced FM, and pilot workload. Flyby PS any ED testors, can you speak to the BS pilot workload in an engagement area? -

Can anyone discuss Kamov's reasoning for designing the Ka-50, then designing the Ka-52? I'd be interested to know, and I think it's as close to comparing apples to apples as we may come. Same company; two different thought processes on the helicopter gunship. Several countries have two-seat gunships. I suppose some also have single-seat gunships. It would therefore also be interesting to know why these countries made the choices they did. Flyby -
hmmmm..... reminds me of the movie "Alien" where that creature is on a crewman's face. :smilewink: Flyby

About old Blue Thunder Actually Blue Thunder was a movie about a Los Angeles cop who flew a special anti-riot helicopter that "the man" was going to use to wipe out rioters. Roy Schieder starred in it. The helicopter looked like a gunship, but the it was all pretty lame. In the end Schieder set the heli down on the railroad tracks just in time for the 8:15 special to smack into it (thus denying "the man" of his super crowd-death-dealer) Flyby

I crack me up! Hmmm...Black Shark versus Blue Thunder...hmmmmm.... Oh wait. Blue Thunder got run over by a train!:megalol: Still it would be nice to know more about why the Black Shark is called so. AirTito can you find out what the Russian army calls it (besides the Ka-50). Flyby

Great Question! I'd like to know too!

Anglo medium fighters (what would you like to see?)
Flyby replied to Avimimus's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
watch out for a DCS Harrier You'll just get yourself killed! ;) Best fly the Tornado. That way if anything goes wrong you can always blame the GIB. Flyby -

Tornado for me I vote the Tornado but only in the ground attack version. No need for another cloning for the F/A18, in my book. As an interdiction plane flying in the maps of BS, with two-seat multiplayer ability, I foresee a great simming experince. Quite frankly it would be something a little different too. I find that refreshing. No super glass cockpit, and latest radar do-dads. In fact I think a heightened sense of vulnerability would increase the immersive pucker factor. Also, perhaps the biggest factor might be the availablity of technical info to help produce a high fidelity model. I don't see that happening with an F/A18, let alone a Longobow or an A10c any time soon. So Ginger Lacey says TORNADO! Flyby ps Ginger actually said "Spitfire" in the car commercials of the early 70s. ;) -

Hey Tharos, Haev you used the new ME to make amision where the BS encounters opfor fast movers, or even the Hog? Just curious since so much NATO equipment seems to be in the sim (going by the videos I've seen). Flyby -
well, no matter what... I appreciate you real rotorhead guys and your service. Be careful, and have safe tours. I'm not a fan of why the U.S in in Iraq, but I still want the troops to get through, and rotate home safely (not to politicise this this thread). So, no offense, just be safe, and WELCOME!! to our forums. Flyby

hey Wild Bill... I pm'd ya

hello neigbor Helloooooooooooooo Wild Bill Kelso! 99th_Flyby here. It's raining in Pleasant Ridge at the moment. ;) Good morning to ya! Flyby PS not hijacking the thread. I want to visit New Hampshire one day. Nice pic.:)

well OK then... Happy Birtday to the Leathernecks too!:yay:Be safe where ever you are. Flyby

Happy Birtday Wags! Take a moment to reflect, drink a cold one, then get back to work!:megalol: Hope you have a gerat day! Flyby

thanks, HJ good looking out. ;) Flyby

I don't know, Tharos. What high atttrition scenario are you talking about? Oh, wait. The videos show some pretty good opposition. I'll revisit them. ;) Flyby Update. I just watched several of the Black Shark videos (by GA) and I now see that I'd forgotten how hellish the battlefield will be when properly represented. By this I mean I saw much NATO equipment both striking and being struck. Plenty of targets to go around, so don't be greedy. :D Lot's of NATO air assests in there too. So, Tharos I do see high attrition scenarios taking place. Nothing like a desperate situation to get the juices flowing! Flyby

thanks Viper. Once again you come thru. I guess we're in a hold mode. Flyby

I've been looking for a list of AI aircraft to be included in BS, both opfor, and friendly. So far, using the search, I have call no joy. I'm sure I missed it, but can someone from ED or where ever help me out? thank you, Flyby
-
Thanks Acedy. Let's hope that someone can pass of target coordinates! Also, I hope mission-building in BS will not be a limited-scenario affair. It seems the gunship shouldn't do SEAD. Anyone wonderinng if the BS world might be a bit on the quiet side? Kinda makes me wish for a Fulda Gap Scenario. So I think I will try to create a Fulda Gap battle when BS comes out. :D

but wait! there's more... hey dudes and dudettes, can we get this thread back on topic? I'd like to know the answer to the original question: what kind of conflict for the Ka-50? I think the discussion of technical pros and cons is interesting and informative, but I, for one, still want to know. What can be divined from looking at the U.S Apache presence in Iraq is that the Ka-50 could be of use as a close air support craft when combating insurgents in urban areas, especially if someone on the ground is designating targets. I once saw a video somewhere that said other craft designating targets for the BS was how it would be employed. I guess troops on the ground could do the same in tight urban areas. So I wonder if special forces will be modeled in BS, for such designating duties? Then, I suppose the traditional armor-busting duties will always be there too. But who will be the armored enemies in BS? Oh as for using the datalink abilities, will the Ka-52 be modeled as an AI targeting command vehicle? This would be similar to an Apache Longbow designating targets for the A models. ( at least I think that's what it can do). Anyway, back on topic! Use that imagination! :D Flyby
