If ED had all the time in the world I'd suggest they have a Reality Tier system. Tier 1: Strict adherence to reality wherever possible. No Grom on MiG-21Bis as an example. Tier 2: Mild disparities from reality. Groms on MiG-21Bis, Anti-Ship missiles on C-101, Igla's on Ka-50's, etc. Things that seem highly plausible either because they have been tested and shown to be possible, or could 'easily' be made possible. Tier 3: All kinds of silliness. AIM-54 on F-15C... Then when setting up a server or creating a mission you could set a Reality Tier. But again, only if they had all the time in the world to develop such a system. But they don't, so I'd prefer reality or close to reality...

Maybe I was thinking 11.1 (which shouldn't matter) or something; but anyway I stand corrected.

Im using the Asus PB287Q which is a 28" 4k monitor. It works well, but frame rates can be a bit all over the place even with 2x970 in SLI. 120 fps one moment, less than 30 depending what's going on. I'd consider at least one right now for 2560x1080. Maybe even for 1.5 as I dont think the 570 is a DX11 card, but time will tell on future performance.

To be fair that strongly resembles my in-sim Ka-50 after I've had it out for a night of combat...

It will never run under wine as long as there is starforce. Back in the A-10C 1.1.1.1 days it would get as far as clicking fly when it would call out to protect.dll. In DCS:W it dies immediately. You can't even navigate the menus.

I didn't either. I was a little surprised, but in no way complaining! I went with the upgrade path, FWIW. It looks like it (roughly speaking) moves aside your windows directory, installs Windows 10, restores all the registry entries and files for your profile and applications, etc. Did a disk cleanup, hit the 'Clean up system files' button to get the extra options, and killed the Windows upgrade stuff. I have TIR, Warthog, and Saitek pedals, but don't use any profile software for HOTAS or Pedals. All worked just fine after the upgrade. I had my headset explicitly selected as my capture device in TeamSpeak, which complained that my capture device was missing even though it had an identically named copy in the dropdown list. On selecting the other copy the 'missing' duplicate entry went away and all worked fine. And lastly I had to update GeForce Experience (automatic when it started) and NVidia drivers.

I upgraded this weekend. No issues so far.

Has anyone gotten Track IR to work on Linux? I think I saw a source tarball somewhere once, but never tried it. Not the most user friendly of scenariod. I'm not saying Linux is impossible, it's not, but support for all the oddball simming hardware is a big consideration. I'd love the choice, but really forget the graphics side, I'd be happy with a Linux dedicated server. The server list would probably explode in size if any ole' aws host or mediocre home system could run a server without dying on the graphics...

Rotary Mod for Warthog Throttle
xaoslaad replied to xaoslaad's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Right. And as far as I can tell the one weakness with mmjoy2 is I can't see or edit the source. I'm at the mercy of available hex files. I mentioned the idea on the SimHQ thread though, so maybe it will come alond as a feature eventually. :) -
Rotary Mod for Warthog Throttle
xaoslaad replied to xaoslaad's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'm not sure if this will help explain. With MMJoy2 you can set up a virtual axis, such that a press in either direction increments or decrements the axis. Pressing down centers the axis. By adjusting the precision I have a nice adjustment between precision and speed. At 14 you can make minute changes but it takes all day. Any lower and it starts stepping more like a button. You can also set a shift such that hardware button 1 with shift 1 is one button to windows and hardware button 1 with no shift is a second button to windows and so on. You can have up to 3 shifts. In windows it looks like this: Toggle hardware button 10 off and the buttons do not register. Toggle it on and they do. The only hiccup is with mmjoy2 the virtual axes have no care in the world about what the shift state is. Whether it's on or off the axes are adjusted. To put it another way, if I just configured them all as buttons and no virtual axes with a toggle I could have 18 buttons in windows. With a 3 way like he said I could have no shift, shift 1, and shift 2, and have 27. If I could work up a four way rotary or something 36, granted to use a button from any set I'd have to flip the toggle to use that set. For my case, I think it would just be nice to flip them so I can use them as buttons for the radio, radar range, elevation, whatever, or as an axis for a trim wheel, etc. Which to be honest I can do now - I'd just have to be careful not to map the axis and the buttons for any one encoder simultaneously. It'd be better if the toggle would turn the axes off like I can the buttons. -
Rotary Mod for Warthog Throttle

Sokol1_br, Thanks for the explanation. I got the virtual axis setup working with press to center, which is kind of nice and this allows for really tiny adjustments. The bouncing was just my bad configuration, as I suspected. I had the precision initially set very high, but had to turn it down to 10 to get a reasonable balance between fine adjustment and speed. It's really nice and I had the P-51D flying very very level very easily, so I'm pretty happy with it. Maybe to f4l0's idea I can use a toggle switch to shift between using them as virtual axis and buttons, so depending on the aircraft and what I want to do (radios, trim wheels, etc., etc.) I can switch the behavior. Interesting ideas anyway. Edit: If I add a Shift for a toggle the buttons only work when the shift is on, but the rotaries work in both cases. Not really what I had in mind, but it could be lived with. It could in effect be a 3 axis / 9 button controller. -
Rotary Mod for Warthog Throttle

That's a good idea! Right now they are represented as buttons. Left is button 1, right is button 2, pressing down is button 3 and so on. I did get them set up as virtual axis using mmjoy2 in which case left/right is presented as an axis, but there is a lot of bouncing. I suspect I'm just not doing the configuration right due to it being an encoder and have asked over at SimHQ about that to see if there is some way to smooth it out properly. Someone also commented on my video about getting better results with multi-turn potentiometers instead, so I may look into that option as well. All interesting things to try. I had to start somewhere, and so this the start. But getting great comments and ideas from people! :) For now I've gone over the measurements on my enclosure, made a bunch of minor tweaks to the lid, and am working on getting a first print. -
Thought I'd share a project I am working on to set up a few rotaries to put on the back of my Warthog throttle using an Arduino Leonardo running MMJoy2. The software makes it brilliantly easy to set up a USB HID controller. Right now I have everything set up and wired in a cardboard box. I can use them to control things like radar elevation, range, trim wheels, radio dials, etc. Each rotary encoder is also a push button, so with a downward press they can do anything any other button can. My next step is to take my roughed out specs for an enclosure, get it a little more precise, find someone to print it out and, and put everything inside. I envision this sitting on the lip on the back of the throttle, attached on the top by the two screws exposed on the top of the throttle with the rotaries exposed through the holes on the lid and USB cable off to the left side. Later I could add more controls (buttons, potentiometers, whatever) by printing a new lid with more holes, or maybe adding a rotary on the right side, etc.

It also helps to take away weapons they do not need to perform the task, especially guns for SEAD. I armed F-16's with HARM's once and while testing watched them do gun passes on SAM's. Very special and didn't end well.

Ok, cool. Maybe that's stated somewhere in the dozens of pages of comments I didnt read through, but maybe also worth editing the first post. Can't wait to purchase regardless. :)

New graphics engine without NTTR and possibly some of the other changes. Sounxs like maybe we'll know better after tomorrows stream.

Since you are doing this as freeware have you put up a donation page? If so can you share the link? If not, would you consider it. I'd be happy to throw money at you for this!

PRE-PURCHASE DCS: L-39 ALBATROS Discussion Thread
xaoslaad replied to terence44's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Can't wait for C or ZA and purchased. DCS:W 1.5, P-40F, L-39C, and I should get my Croswinds around Sept too. It's starting to look like a whole lotta early Christmas. :D -
Voted EE. I suspect we'd see something faster if you concentrate on one aircraft and I'd prefer a more capable multi-role aircraft over others. More variety is always good, but we're already seeing a C-101EB and waiting now for the more capable CC, soon it will be the same with getitng the L-39C and waiting on the more capable ZA, etc. If you really want to provide more than one I'd say throw us the EE and work on the CE later, as I figure if you decide to do both it's going to almost certainly be CE then EE. I've already bought the C-101 and L-39 and fly them once in awhile, but the CC and ZA variants will be very welcome whenever they show up. As for two-seaters the thought is nice, and I like that multiple humans will be able to fly one aircraft, but I wonder how practical that's all going to be in the end. It will be great when it works, but I doubt there will be many pairs of people that can work together that cooperatively. Anyway, my thoughts. Doesn't mean they amount to a hill of beans.

Nice! I had a good feeling. It's not all of it, but a nice part. Very Excited. :)

A WARNING ABOUT MS UPDATES FOR WINDOWS 10
xaoslaad replied to Aviators's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
There is something to be said for small routine and frequent updates. I do update my system pretty much as they come and no problem. People sitting on Windows 7 (and older) screaming 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' are likely to hit at once every little rocky bump on the way to updating from there to whatever they finally go to. You're probably also as likely to perceive problems in jumping 3 versions of Windows as to actually experience them. I laugh at people who do this on fast moving bleeding edge Linux distros just as well. You're four releases behind and finally updating? I can't possibly imagine why that's causing problems. It's far easier to say, "I just did 3 updates and something went wrong so let's see what it was.", than "I just installed 300 updates and jumped three versions of Winodws..." -
They're making good progress. Every time he opens a new screen whether Multi-Player server selection, multi-player aircraft selection, Encyclopedia, Mission Editor, etc. I see things I love. I think in my head the next reasonable date to hope for is sometime in September. The P-40F is coming, supposedly in September, http://veaosimulations.co.uk/product/p-40f/ To that end we'll either need a 'small' update or 2.0, I would think, in order to add the model for non-purchasers, etc. Either way though, if you watch the streams they're looking very good, aside from the occasional crashes, which even in the last few streams have been cut way back. And as it's in heavy development I don't even think that's unexpected. With a couple more months time I wouldn't be surprised if they can fix most the rest. And whether that means a release or just watching Wags for an hour of play without hitting a crash it'd be a good sign of progress, so either way, all good. Anyway, I don't think the breath holding comments are much warranted anymore. There is no doubt there is something nearly working at this point.

Thanks for the summary mwd2 and mtbikergt78. I like the sounds of the bugs fixes and issued getting is to alpha and better OR support! Watched the twitch streamearlier and keep seeing freat things. Cant wait to throw some money at them and try it whether rough around the edges or not.

Mirage doesnt count?

Tacview, if the server permits exported data (or in single player) is a great aid in figuring out what happened if youre willing to pay for it.
