  1. OK, just to make sure I (and anybody else) understood it correctly, the dark line is practically something like map contour line at the same altitude as your aircraft, right? I attempted to draw this quick and dirty schematic to demonstrate: So the pilot of the green Viggen, flying at 250 meters (yes, I know they don't fly that high :)) is going to see the solid green line on his scope, meaning that he has to climb or turn around, otherwise he will crash. Meantime, the pilot of the red Viggen, flying at 300 m, only has to avoid those few red spots. Or am I absolutely wrong here? EDIT: D'oh! Just noticed that I completely missed a sizeable patch of terrain with elevation of 250 just right of the aircraft. It should be painted green too, of course. For the purpose of this demonstration, please ignore it...
  2. Not going to take any information for granted until it's mentioned in an official newsletter here, but yeah, it seems they have leaked it. Expected it a bit sooner in January to be honest, but hey, 27th isn't that far away! Also, a late birthday present for me, too! On a related note, at my work, we should receive a new (and pretty advanced) piece of equipment on 23rd. So besides learning the Viggen, I will have one more "module" to learn... That makes it two interesting things to look forward to! So while Santa is going to be a month late this year, it seems that I have been a good boy, after all :) In the meantime? Back to the Spitfire it is! :pilotfly:
  3. Nah, I'm sure their testers have X52's too... I, on the other hand, have a G940 at my disposal. And we all know that FFB often tends to be buggy and therefore needs to be properly tested... :music_whistling: Ok, if I wanted to keep wishful thinking alive, I'd say that release is not completely out of the question. Think about it - IF they release tomorrow (and I don't really think so), they will surely have to work over the holidays to iron out all the bugs that inadvertely appear. And they will be busy with it for quite some time, therefore I believe it would be better for them to release after New Year. I also expect a pre-purchase (hopefully with a fixed release date even), and a teaser video or something (my bet it will include Viggens in Christmas tree formation :))... But I would be gladly proven wrong.
  4. Thanks for this nice read, Chief Instructor (and for the second part too)! Really well written and informative! Without trying to sound smart or something (haven't ever flown a real plane in my live), I knew about most of these things you mentioned, but nonetheless, it's extremely helpful to have them all nicely summed up and explained. Not to mention i did learn quite a few useful tips from your post! About that "everything suddenly clicking into place", I know exactly what you mean. This same thing happened to me while learning the Huey. For the live of myself, I couldn't achieve a stable hover after liftoff - especially due to my poor work wiht anti-torque pedals. And then, after many failed tries, I came to my PC one day, started a mission, and out of al sudden, my feet did exactly what they were supposed to do, without me even thinking about it. Tell me about "wow" moment... ;) I still have a very long way to go with the Spit (and who knows if I ever reach some degree of proficiency, given my "persistence" while learning new modules), but my takeoffs and landings are certainly getting better - at the beginning, they used to end in a tragic disaster, now they end just in a mild embarrasment :) I feel that your posts have their share in this, so once again, thank you very much!
  5. Last time I checked (while assigning controls to my new Spitfire), it was bugged for me too in the latest 1.5.5. First, I was afraid there's something wrong with my joystick! However, it seems that when I pause my mission and go to the controls settings from there (as opposed to doing this from main menu screen), everything works as it should. Can someone confirm this?
  6. No problem, 23rd is fine with me, too :D
  7. Haven't been active on this forum for over a year... Terrifying how time flies :shocking: Well, I guess this release is worth at least dropping by and saying "thank you" to the dev team... Really nice job guys, as always!
  8. Page 107 talks about "LED illumination" on the gear indicator. I'm pretty certain there were no LEDs used during WWII...
  9. Hello, guys and gals! Just one small question - in Matt's last , I noticed a mirror being fitted in L-39 front cockpit (around 7:00 mark for example). Yet, I can't see the same mirror in my L-39 no matter what. Now, is it something that has not been implemented in the oben beta yet (only in Matt's dev version so far), or am I just missing some painfully obvious way to switch it on? Not that it really matters, but i kind of like it, and now when I can finally use mirrors without bringing my FPS to single digits (all hail EDGE in its glory :worthy:), I thought it would be nice to have. And before somebody asks the obvious question, yes, I have mirrors set to on in my game settings. Thanks for any help!
  10. Then we should also add Jan Vlček, Letňany (both p.9), Cvičná (p.17), Štefan Župko (p.24) and Košice (p.25).
  11. Hello there! I'm not sure whether this belongs here or rather in the 1.5 beta bug forum, but anyways, I thought we should help ED by pointing out typos and errors in L-39 manual, so here it goes: Especially the first chapter (L-39 history), contains many errors in the names of persons or places, that are very obvious to native speaker (often it seems they were directly transliterated from Cyrillics). So far I noticed those: p.10 - "Igri Mateicek" should be "Jiri Matejcek" from p.11 onwards, "Rudolf Duhon" should be "Rudolf Duchon" p.12 contains very amusing error, photo description mentions "Charles Long", although his real name, Karel Dlouhy, is mentioned on p.9 (Charles Long is literal translation from Czech) p.15 - "Turbomecca" should be "Turbomeca" p.16 - "Viecna" should be "Vlecna" instead p.16 also mentions "Rude Letov" factory, although correct name, "Rudy Letov", is used earlier (I also have my doubts about the name "Jan Zranz" mentioned on that page, although I'm unable to find any info on this man - however, the spelling seems very weird) p.21 - "Zagranicny Obchod" should be "Zahranicni Obchod" p.24 - "Trencsen" would look better with correct Slovak spelling of "Trencin" - "Trencsen" is rather Hungarian spelling, or at least I don't know that English spells it like that too So if you find anything wrong with the manual, feel free to add it to this thread. Hopefully, it will help ED make it even better. ;)
  12. Agreed all the way, HeadHunter. Sure, the modules aren't exactly cheap, but you can easily pay the same amount for an AAA gaming title which gives you what, 15 hours of gameplay? You might replay it once or twice if you feel like it, and that's it. DCS modules can keep you entertained for years, and at this time, nothing else gets you closer to actual flying except actually taking real airplane for a ride (which very few of us can, especially in case of military birds). So yeah. More than once, I felt disappointed by the delays, sometimes, I felt disappointed by the bugs, but never, ever, felt I disappointed by the quality of DCS modules.
  13. Hi! Just dropping by to say thank you ED... :) Well, it was a bit delayed, true, but to be honest, I expected the delay to be much worse. I was worried how unprofessional will ED look after missing just another deadline, but in the end, they handled it very professionally and resolved the issues in no time. Credit where credit is due, thank you again ED team and now take some time off... You deserve it!
  14. Hello! One thing i noticed - tail rotor of static Mi-8 is always blurred, even though it's not moving - see attached picture. Also, main gear wheels are sunken into the ground, issue with suspension animation maybe? It happens only to Mi-8's placed as static objects, flyable Mi-8's seem to be all right.

  15. Exactly that. Sure, if those bugs are really critical, then I understand that there is no point in any release at this time. But if they are not... People are hearing how DCSW 2.0 is "coming soon" for last three years or so, and guess what - they are still here. They are ranting, they are frustrated, but still, they remain loyal ED customers. So, if three years of "It's coming this year, guys! (...) Okay, maybe not that year, but this one for sure! (...) But this year, seriously!" has not put customers off, I doubt that less than perfect *beta* update will. Personally, I believe we are well in the "better something now then nothing again" territory. I get what you mean, but I don't see anything even slightly unfair about it. One thing is giving estimates, other thing is announcing something people are paying for, and then not delivering on time. 24 hours, one week or a half year, it doesn't really matter. Sure, people over here are getting what "preorder" means, and are well aware what huge endeavour 1.5 / 2.0 is. But still, let's see what L-39 e-shop page says: "The beta version of DCS: L-39 will be available in September 2015." See, will be available. Not might be, not is planned to, will be. That seals it. ED is selling a product for money, and advertises it as available in september. Missing this date, be it for one day, is, indeed, what I do call "highly unprofessional". Sorry, if you choose such a strict wording, then be prepared to deliver on a strict schedule.
  16. Hi! This is pretty old and well-known video, and of completely unrelated aircraft to boot, but it demonstrates what FBW can do prety nicely IMO. Look at the tail control surfaces every time she lifts off the deck: Of course it's not the pilot pitching *down* on takeoff. The FBW system simply concludes that it's the best way of maintaining takeoff pitch in this unusual VTOL configuration. Also note how the control surfaces (and even the nozzle) work to cancel out any unwanted roll or yaw. Again, this is uncommanded by the pilot, he simply tells the plane to fly straight by holding the stick still, and the computer takes care of the rest.
  17. Confirmed here with G940, luckily you can invert the axis in the FF tune menu.
  18. Currently, I own them all except C-101, Hawk, and CA. I will surely buy the L-39, because it's a really enjoyable little jet, popular all over the world, also it's made in my country and i really really like this plane. :) It will surely satisfy all my needs for light trainers, so the other two will have to step aside. If I eventually end up buying one of them too, it will most likely be the Hawk, simply because I like the design better. But not before she gets proper AFM, or EFM, or whatever is it called now. Then, of course, the Hornet. It's not only one of the few U.S. planes I really care about, it will be also the first modern jet with DCS fidelity. Multirole, carrier-based, with precise ammunition and stuff, what's not to love? Oh, and the F-14. Such an iconic plane, one I loved since my childhood. And no, not because that stupid movie. :D Other than that, I will be probably temted for the Spitfire too, and will keep a very close look at the Eurofighter. If somebody did Rafale, though, I would be even happier. Wow, it looks like a pretty long list I have here. I should better start saving. In the future, I'd like to see more Russian planes, and especially more helicopters. Can't wait for Belsimtek to announce the Hind! But honestly, what I want now more than any modules is the release of EDGE. It's really long overdue now, and all those wonderful modules really need some adequate and up-to-date engine to fly in.
  19. No, you aren't. They lost me somewhere between "2014 is going to be an exciting year" and "Hard to say, but first half of 2015 might be hopeful." Except, you know, I'm not waiting anymore. I have simply focused on other areas in my life, and if EDGE happens to come sometimes in the future, then, well, I guess I will take a look.
  20. "Now you're thinking with Portals™!"
  21. On a completely unrelated note, but this part find I very funny: Of course they cannot say where it is! It's a classified information. :D
  22. I'm with you here. I still like the old map and I'd love to see it being converted to DCSW2 standard. Don't know about ED, but I'd be happy with a 3rd party dev doing it, and I'd have no problems with paying for it (not a full price of a new map though). That's true, the old map won't impress newcomers anywhere near as much as NTTR would. So unless ED wants to release NTTR as free content too... ;) However, I'm willing to bet that ED will hold back the DCSW2 release until NTTR is finished. They will want to demonstrate EDGE capabilities on purpose built map, not on a ported one. No, he meant 400% gain, that is the original 20FPS + 80FPS more. So he is right. Sorry for being pedantic as well. :P
  23. As if you didn't know:
  24. Yep. I thought the only place where you can see jets flying this low above highways is Russia. ;)
  25. Nice site, i like it! ;) And dat video... holy hell! Never seen anything like it in a flight sim before. Such clean and crisp graphics, and the amazing level of detail from ground level up to the stratosphere... rendered me speechless. I'm usually keeping my distance from the "zomg so awesum pls ed release it nao!!!!11eleventy!!!!" crowd, but seriously, how much longer do you expect me to endure the waiting after seeing THIS?! For the sake of my mental health, I will pretend that I've never read the "hopefully first half of 2015" part.
