In that testing it sounded like the FW190 was quicker off the line but the P47 would end up winning the race. It also sounded like its climb rate and higher speed turn time wasn't that bad either. I'm sure this bird will be quite the handful even with its competition when used correctly. I like the last picture in your other post ... really gives you an idea of how huge this plane really was.

Server Announcement: -= ACG WW2 Server (EU) =-
fastfreddie replied to IronJockel's topic in Multiplayer
AI was still there and didn't get removed. They are by no means hard to shoot down but to myself and I'm sure many others ... a waste of time or ammo. I can shoot down Ai all day on quick start missions or in the mission editor. Really hate that almost every server now days is running missions with them. Nothing worse than wasting ammo on 2 or 3 Ai and having to go land so you can get vulched. Paint them pink or something so I don't waste my ammo or alt/energy advantages. -
Good News for the K4, D9, and P51 ...
fastfreddie replied to Anatoli-Kagari9's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
No the point is that there has been whining about the P51 and its fuel since they released info on which Dora (Engine) was going to be in the game. It has gotten very old and ED has already said that they were going to look into it when WWII is done. The same group of guys bring this crap up about every other month and they need to learn to fly with what they have now. We don't always get the perfect version or like the model of the planes they select and NO DCS WWII scenario is going to be 100% historically accurate. Allies won't be enduring flights of hundred's of miles to reach a target, DCS German pilots probably have more flight time than any Dora or K4 pilot ever had, and AA most likely won't be even close to as deadly as it was in real life. Many things in DCS will not be historical but they have given you something as close as possible so learn to fly in it. -

Of coarse adding wing racks wouldn't help those in DCS so you don't here them calling to make sure they are a fixed asset or the 2 hours+ flight time home if they cook their engine. The P-51 is more than a challenge for the Dora in its current state and the K-4 is still in beta so even whatever advantages it has will be changing also. I have yet to see a round where the Mustangs get slaughtered online when there are similar numbers or have decent/good Mustang pilots. You would think they were flying P51-A versions with all the talk around here. Servers are probably going to be a mess when the Spit Mk XIV gets here and throwing a P-51 on steroids in won't help. -
DCS: P-47D Thunderbolt The next World War II aircraft for DCS World will be the Thunderbolt. As you can see by the images in this newsletter, the cockpit is quite far along and overall project status is moving along nicely. Once the Bf 109 K-4 is out of beta (good progress as you can see in the 1.2.15 preliminary change log), progress on this module will further accelerate. Sweet sweet whispers in my ear! Thank you for delaying the Spitfire and making this one next. I've only got one more free module and I really didn't want to waste it on the Spit.

Great to see these comments. I'll pick it up sometime in the future and hopefully start flying my F86 I've had for awhile now.

I hope it improves things because I've seen alot more stuttering and other things since the previous patch. -
What is the online multiplayer scene like?
fastfreddie replied to Noxos's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
Weekends are usually the busiest with servers reaching over 20 players and if you catch the ACG server in the mornings here (US) they have close to 20 players many times a week. It won't be anything approaching IL2 for quite awhile but that doesn't mean that you can't have a great time. TBH my favorite times are when there are just several good players on the server at the same time instead of vulching, crashing, and lost groups that usually appear when it gets full. -
Wasn't ED going to put out the interview in some form with Erich Brunotte? Just wondering if I missed it or something.

Looking for newbie players to match in dogfighting
fastfreddie replied to lesnyborsuk's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
Hey Whiplash, I didn't see your post but that mission wouldn't be useful in a 32 player environment. It is more of a 1v1, 2v2 mission but you could expand the concept to 32 players using one standard height or set it up with different altitudes in different missions while spreading the enemy units further out (3 miles or so). I've got the Dora/K4 ground attack mission about finished and it needs testing if you guys want that one. I should have time to set up a bigger version in the next week if you'd like. -
Is it your computer or internet connection? I had to finally upgrade my computer to play DCS online or the A10 module in the campaign mode. It still gets alittle choppy with a top of the line system sometimes when alot of planes are firing in one area and thats with an expensive build.

Its US based but usually its more mid-day to early evening. ACG server is good earlier in the morning and is based in Europe. I haven't flown alot lately but usually it picks up pretty quick once 5 or more get on there.

Will the Skies over Normandy be populated?!
fastfreddie replied to Celestiale's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
These WWII birds are nowhere near as complex as the A10/BS and most people should be able to pick up the basics (startup/takeoff,landing) in a few days. Combat employment will take longer depending on their skill level and flight sim experience but anyone can improve. I think most get scared away from DCS because of hearsay or youtube videos of the A10/BS. -
I agree Saburo ... the fast dogfights is ok every now and then but I preferred hunting for targets. My favorite mission on the DoW server was the winter map but I liked the Three Lakes and capture the airfield mission also. I've kinda burned out on DCS after some of the "air quake" maps and have only flown maybe a half dozen times this year. I'm going to try to get back into a groove again with the Dora because if you got any altitude advantage with the beta 109 it was a slaughter fest in the fast dogfight missions. Hopefully with some new maps and Edge we'll get some great missions going. I've already got one planned for Kasserine Pass when ever the Nevada maps hits and we get some WWII units.

fastfreddie replied to Celestiale's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I agree David ... as soon as 7+ modules are released finding slots for the different planes and having missions to include them all will be difficult. Do you include the P40, Bearcat, Mosquito, etc or just leave them out. -
Depends on the situation ... I like to preform scissors when an enemy has a much greater speed advantage so I just keep the throttle on while making quicker turns. Once you have them in front of you which doesn't take but a few scissor maneuvers you can start getting great deflection shots or roll in behind him at some point when he either decides to fly straight through or you have a good enough position to just sit behind him. Slowing down to try to enter scissors with a good pilot behind you can be difficult because they have a few options. They can slow down also and keep their distance while getting deflection shots. Like in the video when they have speed they can just fly through or pull up keeping the speed and altitude advantage probably leaving you in a worse situation than before. The newer pilots in the Mustang are the main ones that get caught in slow speed scissor actions and defeated usually. This is why I use the small defensive swings to evade getting shot while picking back up my speed. It works much better in extending the engagement or giving me an exit when caught going low and slow.

I worked in a small business retail environment for 13 years and when items went on sale or had reduced prices it was because of seasonal purpose of the goods or inventory turn over typically. DCS doesn't necessarily have the same business model because their product doesn't change or have these restrictions. The company I worked for struggled after the "great recession" and started offering discounts all the time with deeper cuts later to drive business. Customers started to expect these discounts even when the economy improved and some only showed up when the biggest sales came around. Well reduced margins with higher cost of doing business (rent/utilities/cost of goods) sent us packing in 2013 and I've seen what devaluing your product/services can do with constant sales. Just hope DCS doesn't fall into the same problems we faced offering flash sales or other types so often.
-
Current pricing would probably be fine if they didn't reduce the prices so quickly on these modules. You see titles only released a couple of months on sale for 40% off and they drop even more a short time after that. I'm sure they move more modules that way but it creates a climate where people who would of bought it day one just wait alittle while instead. I know I'll wait till the Spitfire goes on sale since it was one of the keys I lost in the WWII screw up.

Will the Skies over Normandy be populated?!
fastfreddie replied to Celestiale's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I agree and the attack tactics for the Me262 will be different from the Dora/K4. It will still require altitude and speed to attack but the approaches will be different. Fly into the attack and fly straight out of it in a steady climb but you will have to acquire the target after each attack which isn't easy at these speeds with the spotting in DCS. Me262 pilots that engage in turning fights with Mustangs/Spitfires will face the same fate as those in WWII that were caught without altitude or speed. Mustangs/Spitfires will be capable of catching the Me262 in a dive also and there are plenty of good pilots in Mustangs since it has been released for so long. This aircraft will require as much discipline as the Dora to be successful on the main servers so I think most of us will be quite humbled until we gain experience. -
One other good maneuver I've found to use in the Dora whether in a defensive or offensive maneuver position in vertical looping fight is to cut the loop in half so to speak. Keep visuals on the enemy your with in a looping circuit so when he enters the bottoms of the loop and you are at the top of the loop ... roll your plane and come straight down on him. Not a great example because we both entered the vertical fight on angles but check around the 9:40 mark to get an idea. Also if you in a defensive loop change the angles of the loop ... say a start a loop going straight (12 oclock) with an enemy behind you as you go up or down change the angle to (10/11/1/2 oclock angle) and make fluid changes depending on what your enemies are doing. I have a good example of that in my K4 "Murder by the Bay" video if you want to see it. It's the second combat clip about a minute or so in but the principle applies to all aircraft. You can also use greater changes to the looping maneuver by cutting it half or changing the direction all together in faster rolling planes.
-
Yes, the maneuver I used in the video to initiate the scissors works 95% of the time on most pilots in starting the process. The pilots I was facing in the video are a very good pair that fly together alot of the time and used proper judgement for their situation. When you have a height/altitude advantage in a Mustang I can't see many reasons for ever wanting to give it up to go into scissors with a Dora. Just be careful in what situations you put yourself in because the Dora is not a plane that forgives mistakes against the Mustang very easily much like the Mustang pilots are finding with the K-4.
-
Yeah, discipline is key to the Dora and I know it is hard when finding targets on some of the missions can be very hard. I see alot of players getting pissed when flying against the Mustang because they usually all do the same evasive maneuvers (pull up to the left/right or roll out) and lose discipline pretty quick even with other Mustangs in the area.
-
Sounds like you pretty much understand what you need to do ... just putting it all into place is whats hardest with the Dora. Deflection shooting is pretty much a requirement for a good Dora pilot to master unless you plan on catching every Mustang off guard. Learn defensive maneuvers also for the Dora which will differ somewhat from the K-4. You can do some low speed dog fighting with the Dora but I wouldn't suggest it unless your sure he's alone and you have a good grasp on using flaps at low speed. I think Dora pilots have to have the most situational awareness of all the WWII planes released so far because its so easy to get in big trouble quickly in it. I almost never climb in the Dora when I have a Mustang going a similiar speed within 800 meters on my six. Just keep your nose down and gain speed/distance before climbing. I did a video with some horizontal defensive maneuvers on what I'm talking about somewhere around the 5:00 mark or so.

Will the Skies over Normandy be populated?!
fastfreddie replied to Celestiale's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
The way most of the servers are dealing with slots now seems to be working with the only exception being right after new planes are released. 4 Dora/4 K-4/4 Me 262 vs 4 Mustang/4 Spit/4 P47s will probably be fine in most missions. Spotting is pretty difficult in DCS so I can't see a plane like the Me262 dominating in this environment unless its attacking large targets like the B17. The Spit XIV could become a problem with alot of slots and it will be interesting to see how servers handle the large number of planes already announced including the P40/Bearcat/Etc. -

Which book in the series was that quote in MiloMorai? I've got books 2 and 3(about finished with 3 now) ... I'm going to have to search to find books 1&4. It really has me interested in flying Me 262 when it comes out but I wonder if the players online will have similar accident rates.
