  1. Sorry to offend you. No reason to be cheeky. I opined about what I know and you don't like my conclusion. A simple high power noise jammer like you want would only serve to disrupt everyone's radars. A powerful noise jammer swings the advantage to the aircraft with IR trackers. I would prefer something more advanced than what you wish for (with the ability to direct energy to target specific threats in both high band and low band and to be able to modulate the frequencies) but I also know that it will never be full real due to the limitations of the game designers access to the information of the systems. This being a wish list thread I would prefer a more realistic approach to EW. I agree that the current state of EW in game is poor but adding another poor jamming system to the mix will only serve to exacerbate the problem... again, my opinion. I understand the Belsemtek is going to be working on the OH-58D which will be a day one purchase for me. Scouting/Reconnaissance intrigues me greatly and that helo in particular has had my interest for a while.
  2. There are no SOJ's in the game at the moment. All of the aircraft have self protection jammers only. Stand off Jammers are dedicated platforms like the EA-18G, EF-111A and EA-6B. You will not see an accurate representation of these aircraft as their true capabilities are a closely guarded secret. As for other reconnaissance assets I would want an F-14 Tomcat TARPS bird, an RF-4C Phantom or an OV-1D Mohawk.
  3. Well, the MiG-23MLD did have much better acceleration and longer range missiles that the F-16A, but the Falcon would rule the WVR arena. We are talking 70's-80's F-16A before the advent of the AMRAAM or the AIM-7 capable F-16ADF.
  4. Or an F-14 Tomcat! Anytime Baby!

Gunship Ace by Al Venter.... Great book that really does a good job of telling the story of Neall Ellis and his exploits as a helo pilot for South Africa's in its border war and his path to becoming a mercenary for hire in Africa, Asia and even Europe. Would be a great book to base a DCS campaign off of... http://www.amazon.com/GUNSHIP-ACE-Neall-Helicopter-Mercenary/dp/1612000703 EDIT: I forgot to say it is a true story
  6. For the amount I invested the important things to me are the aircraft and map. The physical items (t shirt, posters, manuals) are not really required and not why I backed the project. I can definitely live without them. Coming from the Il-2 series, this project was a good first step to recreate the WWII environment so I invested in this endeavor to help ensure it comes to fruition. I would like to see 90+ players battling it out in a multiplayer server just like in the golden days of Il-2... That was a blast.
  7. I figured the step designation was a manufacturers method of tracking the upgrades because everybody knows how much the military loves its acronyms. I remember seeing the AH-1F's of 3ACR flying over the McGregor range/White Sands when they were at Ft Bliss. There were all kinds of helo's in the area back then. In addition to the Cobras there were Chinooks, Hueys, Blackhawks, Air Force HH-60G's out of Holloman and I even saw a Mi-24 Hind once. Those Helo's were always awesome to see. Almost makes me wish I had joined the Army instead of the Navy... Almost Would be nice to see a DCS Hind as well.
  8. Before 1988 the AH-1P/E/F were all AH-1S's. They were all modifications of the S that is and had what was called "Step" modifications. The AH-1S Step 1 turned into the AH-1P, the AH-1S Step 2 became the AH-1E and the AH-1S Step 3 became the AH-1F after 1988's re-designation of the various modifications of the AH-1S. I've done a scale model of the Testors 1/48 AH-1S Cobra back in my younger days (1991 just after Desert Storm) and wanted to make the most up to date single engine version so I had to do some real research to figure out the AH-1F was actually the AH-1S Step 3. Perhaps I should build another one... I'd love to have the AH-1F or AH-64A and OH-58D's to act as a hunter killer teams in a Fulda Gap scenario in the late 80's/early 90's.
  9. ARMA simulates vehicles and aircraft very poorly. I laughed when I saw a helicopter lifting an M-1 as a sling load and the controls are rather wonky as well with none of the physics being accurately portrayed. ED has put out RFI's for the T-72 and M-1 tanks... I suppose to try to turn them into DCS level modules. The issue I have with that is that the maps/terrain is not up to snuff as far as ground combat is concerned. To accurately portray ground combat the terrain needs to be malleable to allow for things like foxholes, tank traps, and vehicle fighting positions to be built into the terrain. Everything in the map/terrain needs to be destroyable ant many more terrain features (trees with collision models, realistic foliage and topography to name a few) need to be incorporated so the armor, infantry, and helicopters can fight in a close to real world environment. 70 ton vehicles moving along the ground need to interact with the terrain by causing cumulative damage to what they are traveling over and it would be nice to see a Mk-84 sized pothole that is nigh impossible for a vehicle to drive over or a bunch of pulverized trees and wilderness fires, smoke and haze caused by combat vehicles/artillery. EDGE will be the limiting factor as far as that is concerned and we really have no clue as to how much it will allow the maps/terrain to be expanded upon and effects like massive amounts of fire and smoke implemented into the engine. Until the terrain issues are addressed DCS will be just a flight simulator with some ground vehicles that can be moved about. There are a lot of great ARMA mods out there and the guys that do them are very talented. The problem is still going to be the maps. At the moment DCS does not deliver the necessary fidelity required to make the infantry combat realistic. DCS does indeed need fleshing out as far as the ground combat side is concerned so I welcome any improvements.
  10. ETO...MTO... Meh... PTO:thumbup:
  11. Ok,, the poll says preferred opponent for the MiG-21Bis so my preferred ride for aerial engagement is the Tomcat. Now, the topic of the thread is "what would be the best opponent" so I would choose an aircraft of similar size and capability... Mirage F1. Historically the MiG-21Bis has squared off with Israeli/Iranian F-4E Phantoms (and F-4D's in the case of Iran) so if taken in a historical perspective that would be the way to go.

    903+1

Any 8342's NEC's or 6257 MOS out there that remember that number? On my last cruise it seemed like we had more "flight time" in the hanger bay than anywhere else. We made this little gem for the more popular excuse...
  13. No, they don't.
  14. I'd like CFT's and activation of the dormant A/G capability.
  15. Voted for the Bone as it is one of my all time favorites with the F-111F, Tu-22M3 and F-117A falling into place in that order. Any of those would be awesome!
  16. My take on this is that every aircraft added to DCS world is good for the brand. There are aircraft that I would not purchase simply because, for me, they do not interest me. It seems that he WWII aircraft are a way for the companies who are building these fine modules to turn profits right now and the WWII modules will keep them in business so they can make more modern modules when features like A/G radar and EDGE are implemented. Right now there seems to be something within world itself that is slowing the development of the highly sought after fast movers. That is my impression anyway. Correct me if I am wrong.

I highly recommend the Flying Black Ponies by Kit Lavell to anyone with an interest in the Vietnam conflict and Naval Aviation. It's a great read... all I need now is a DCS:OV-10 Bronco:pilotfly: http://www.amazon.com/Flying-Black-Ponies-Support-Squadron/dp/159114468X
  18. Indeed, and nothing says Leatherneck more than the mighty F4U Corsair... one of my favorite aircraft of all times. Bring it on guys.
  19. Good to hear! I'm just waiting for the poll about what your next project is...
  20. Yes. Yes, it was called the Banana jet.
  21. IRL, they do get rather squirrely at the supersonic/transonic region of flight and if you expected a clean separation at those speeds you would not even know what hit you as your aircraft starts to break up... Imagine that at Mach 3.
  22. I damage my own plane all the time anyway... even without interacting with other aircraft. :joystick:
  23. I hope we will be able to tip V-1 Buzz Bombs with our wingtips. It didn't work so well in Il-2 multiplayer.
  24. I think he might be referring to the forward antenna radome on the LERX by the intakes. Without delving into the intricacies of the MiG-29's avionics architecture, I assume it is a forward receiver for the RWR.
  25. ...and a Panther as well! We will also need the Hs-129B-2 and F4U Corsair (all versions) as well.
