Your favorite missile evasion technique
Rhino4 replied to arthuro12's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
@ Cosmo: Man, I just laughed so hard tears are rolling down my face! Haven't seen that in ages! EDIT: Okay, back on topic. What do I do? SU-27/MiG-29S:pilotfly: Step One: Fly head on and wait for them to fire at me (hopefully from beyond 20k or so) and then turn around and run like heck back the way I came! This makes them very angry at both me and their wasted missile.:harhar: Step Two: If they don't fire from beyond 20-30k then I fire an ER and f-pole left and right depending on whether I have any more bandits on my scope and where they are (to keep separation for as long as possible), get below them...And get ready to beam, break, roll, or press. Step Three: What I do depends on what the bandit does; Step Three(A): If he fires at me during my f-pole and the separation is still beyond 20k, then refer to step one. Step Three(B): If I have been using step one continuously on the same guy and I'm pretty sure he's down to his last two missiles (and under 20k) then I beam and get ready to roll if I can't get the missile to lose enough energy. Step Three©: If he fires TWS and I don't get enough warning then I increase my f-pole as much as I can before I am forced to attempt a roll-evasion. Step Three(D): If the bandit goes defensive as soon as I fire, then I maintain my f-pole (and my hard lock) until I am pretty sure that no unguided actives or heaters are in the air and then I press HARD to try and kill the distance while he is completely defensive. Step Four: Assuming the bandit goes defensive and is within 20k (and assuming the missiles I already have in the air are out of energy and won't reach him), I kill my hard lock and try for a quick EOS lock while I have a good look up his tailpipes even if it means killing any SARH I am already guiding. If I can't get it then I switch back to active radar and continue with step two, but if I can... Step Five: With a running bandit and and eos lock, I simply try to close the distance, maintain my lock undetected, stay below the bandit, and wait for him to turn back in. As soon as I see him begin a turn back in I fire an ET in the direction he is turning, make sure my missile is guiding, put him in the notch and as soon as he completes his turn I head for the beam and get ready for a merge if my ET fails. (and YES although, I don't often need it, I authorize the launch if I have to: so sue me:music_whistling:). Hopefully by this time I have reduced the distance to 15k or less and by the time he completes his turn and finds me again he'll get a heater in his teeth. Note: Chaff and Flares are your friends. Use them preemptively, but don't waste them when attempting step one as they aren't usually needed. Also: The steps above are very general and avoid many specifics and underlying techniques. They aren't set in stone and change fluidly as our enemies do. They are very general guidelines and when it comes right down to it, your experience and gut feeling are the only things you'll REALLY be listening to when the shit hits the fan. Reading a bunch of forums won't teach you squat without getting out there and attempting what you've learned in real time.:smartass: And one more thing- All of those steps leave out the most important thing of all: teamwork. The most inexperienced fighter-jocks can take out the most experienced Sierra-Hotel pilot if they work together. For example- Step one works ten times better if you have a wingy flying in trail or spread and working with you to lure the bandit into wasting missiles:blink:, kill his SA:shocking:, bait him into over-extending:crazy: and generally making a fool of himself:joystick:. Whenever possible, outnumber the enemy. Screw being fair. Pick off one at a time with team work and the odds go from 4-4 to 4-3 to 4-2 to the point where the other guys are so confused that they think a dead wingy is still covering their back when it's YOU lining up right behind him for the kill-shot.:tomato: ...Just my opinion... -

@ Esac: You can't get one, dude. They're from hirevsims. For military and commercial buyers only. I see hopefull simmers post a link to them every now and then, but there's no hope for people like us unless you have a couple hundred thousand and are willing to purchase in bulk. But I doubt they would allow resale. The last time I saw them posted was for an f-15e dual throttle arm replica (And I sooooooo wanted one). It's not fair! They could make an absolute KILLING if they went for the hobbyist simmer... -
Hi. I recently built a new computer and so far it's doing great. I just have one problem. I used a new hard drive and I want to take the stuff from my old hard drive and put some of it on my new hard drive. So I hooked both of the hard drives up to my comp, booted from the new hd and once windows loaded I was able to take stuff from my "program files" folder and move it to the new hard drive, but when I tried to access the c:\documents and settings\owner file it says "access denied". Is there any way to bypass this and gain access? All of my music and personal files from my old computer are in there and I REALLY don't want to have to go through reloading every single one of my cd's onto my comp again. Last time it took months!:helpsmilie:

DCS: Black Shark - Q&A **READ FIRST!**
Rhino4 replied to EvilBivol-1's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Can you link these failure probabilities to triggers? For instance: Can I make a trigger that says if "player exceeds 400kph" then "chance of hydraulic failure=75% for 5 minutes"? -

Problem installing flaming cliffs.
Rhino4 replied to Rhino4's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Okay, so I was able to DL the FC setup exe and it installed perfectly (I assume, since nothing seemed to go wrong), but when trying to load LO I get this error message: It doesn't even ask me for my activation code. It immediately goes to this error message. Can I get some official help here? I'm really at a loss as to what I should try next. Update: After remembering that the 1.12b patch had an update for starforce in it, I decided to try patching my broken game and see if that fixed it. Well long story short, it worked and I now have a working copy of LO 1.12b. The best part? With my new rig I'm getting 60fps over cities with everything maxed out! I never imagined that high water settings could look so good. Now I just have to solve the problem of my stt software for my x52 not loading. The cd has no scratches and yet will not load and the dl from the saitek website won't work either: says the file is corrupted. The drivers updated fine, but for some reason the stt software just won't work...Ah, well. I'll figure it out somehow. Even if I have to map every single button in-game, I'll think of something... -

@ Wags: Do you think you could turn the producers notes into track files/training tracks and include them in release? Would be cool to watch them in-game. -

Problem installing flaming cliffs.
Rhino4 replied to Rhino4's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
My old computer ran it perfectly (although slowly). I've tried updating graphics drivers with no success. DLing FC from the russian mirror was a no-go as well. I am trying a dl manager now. Maybe there is a problem with my ie downloader... EDIT: No-go on using the DL manager... I am now at a loss as to what I should do next... Update: Using the 1st cd of my FC 2-disk hardcopy I was able to install lomac 1.0 without any graphical errors whatsoever. Trying to use the second (FC) cd did not work, though, and I got an "error code 3" just like the dl'ed version... Update #2: DLing FC from the website has not worked whatsoever I have tried. The FAQ says that the file should be 295,916,115 bytes but mine is 287,746,956 bytes even when using dl manager or firefox and not ie. Maybe the file on the website is actually corrupted??? -

Rhino4 replied to Rhino4's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Okay so I should have used the search function for error code 3... My bad...I am now trying to dl from alternate mirror (russian instead of us). We'll see if that works. I still don't understand the pixelated skins issue though... -
Hi. Okay, from the beginning: I installed lomac onto a new computer that I just built and fired it up to test it (without upgrading to FC 1st). At first everything seemed fine but then I looked over my shoulder at my wing and realized that my entire aircraft was a horrible pixelated rainbow or little squares. The shape looked right, but the skin didn't load properly. Then I checked out the other aircraft in the area and same deal. All had lost their skins and were instead covered in tiny boxes made up of many different colors. I figured that upgrading to FC might work, but when I try to update (from the download on lockon.ru) I get about halfway through extracting all of the files and then I get "error code 3" and setup quits on me. I have bought 3 different hard copy versions of lomac over the years and all of the discs do the same thing (skins on aircraft not loaded properly. missiles too most of the time). The hard copy version of flaming cliffs that I have does the same thing as the downloaded version ("error code 3"). I am at my wits end. I have tried and tried to figure this thing out (vga driver updates/updating directx/updating my xp version) but I just can't think of anything else to try... My setup: windows xp professional sp2 asus pq5 deluxe mobo intel core 2 duo e8500 at 3.16 g.skill 2G of ram (1 stick) nvidia 8700 512mb zalman 750w psu I am starting to give up hope of seeing anybody on hyperlobby ever again....HELP!?!?!

Okay, so everything arrived very quickly from newegg.com and I was extremely excited unpacking everything. After giving the mobo manual a VERY thorough read:book:, I ripped out the guts from my old comp and started putting it all together. Once everything was hooked up, I applied power and gave it a go. Everything seemed fine at first (lights/leds came on, fans started going, bios booted up right away) but then I ran into a problem: "Windows has detected a hardware configuration change and needs to reactivate." Then it asked me to insert my copy of xp.:surprise: I leaned back and thought to myself, "Crap!" because I had lost the disk in my move (I recently moved cross-country and several things disappeared en-route). "Well, what now?" I thought. "I guess I'll have to go out and buy a new copy of xp...":dunno: So I get to the store and am immediately assaulted by all things "Vista," but I resisted and decided to stick with my trusty xp. I bought the home version and sped like crazy the whole way home.:pilotfly: The first thing I did after I walked through the door was to boot up and insert the disk...Then I get a screen that says windows is preparing to "update" and that I should have my old copy of xp out and ready to be inserted. "What the..?? Why the heck do I need my old disk? I just bought a new one!!" Then I looked at the xp box: "XP Upgrade for users of windows 98 to 2000." ...."AAAARGH!!!":furious: So I take the box back to the store and exchange it for the ONE copy they had left of windows xp professional (no home versions available), and I said "F*** It" and bought myself a new hard drive as well. I wound up with a WHOPPING 1TB hard drive from western digital:thumbsup: (No more worrying about how many games I have installed heheh). I go home, hook up the new HD and let 'er rip! Once again, everything seems to be going fine, and hey, windows setup just came up and says it's loading! "YAY!" But then, like a hot knife through butter, the "blue screen of death" pops up and cuts a hole through all my hopes and dreams. "Stop code: 0x0000006f"!!!!:wallbash: So I go online with my wife's laptop (Always give your wife your old laptop just in case this happens and you need to steal it back from her:smilewink:) and I look for the stop code. After searching through about 30 different forums, one of which wanted me to pay for a solution (!), I finally narrowed it down to either compatability options with my HD or optical drive, or something messed up with my ram. The very Next day the first thing I did was to go open up my case and take out one of my sticks of ram. If that didn't work, I would switch out the ram sticks and try again to see if either of them were busted. Then I would have had to switch out HD's. Then I would have had to call up one of my friends and beg a loaner optical drive from him to see if that would work. LUCKILY, as soon as I took out the first stick of ram and gave it a go, it worked flawlessly! True, I only have 2G of ram now instead of the planned 4G, but at least the damn thing installed correctly. THANK GOD.:clap: Now I just have to go back and install everything onto my computer all over again.:pilotfly: One question: My old HD has a lot of stuff on it I would like to transfer over to my new HD. How would I go about it? I have everything I need to connect to my mobo and supply power, but what do I do once I connect everything and hit the power button? -

The qualified vendors list made me change my ram decision from patriot to g.skill. Not a bad switch considering it's cheaper and it's got a 5 star review from over 300 people. Well...time to click the buy button....I'll keep you all posted and let you know how it turns out. Thanks again for the help. -

Okay. Took your advice and did a LOT of research. I went and looked at just about every explanation I could find on how to build a computer. Really liked the one at geekempire.com. That guy is hilarious And very easy to understand: Helped to make me not so nervous about doing this myself. I have settled on newegg.com as my source for hardware as they seem to have both excellent prices as well as many people who trust them. I have decided not to upgrade my video card for another few months and have settled on these things: 1: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor http://http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Processors+-+Desktops-_-Intel-_-19115036 2: Creative 70SB046A00000 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Serieshttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102005 3: ASUS P5Q Deluxe LGA 775 Intel P45 Intel Motherboardhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131297&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Motherboards+-+Intel-_-ASUS-_-13131297 4: Patriot Viper 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memoryhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220334 5: ZALMAN ZM750-HP Continuous 750W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V V2.91 Modular LED Heatpipe-Cooled SLI Power Supplyhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817379006 My questions: 1: I have an ANTEC LIFESTYLE SERIES SONATA II PIANO BLACK ROHS QUIET ATX MID TOWER CASE 450 http://www.computersunlimited.com/antec_lifestyle_series_sonata_antec_5713_prd1.htm. Will this case be adequate, or should I move to a larger case? It says that it supports ATX motherboards. Will the motherboard that I have chosen fit in my case, or should I upgrade to a larger case? 2: Does the processor come with the heatsink and fan? Does it come with the thermal paste that I have read about? Will I need to purchase a heatsink and fan separately? 3: I have never bothered to buy a sound card before. Will I be able to tell the difference with the one I have chosen rather than without it? 4: I already have a 550w power supply. Is upgrading to a 750w a good idea? I intend to upgrade the graphics card a few months from now and I think I might need the extra power...Thanks for all the suggestions above. I'm one step away from clicking the buy button. Just wondering what your opinions are. -

Apache is not even flyable yet, dude. They haven't even released BS yet... -
I suppose we can safely assume that it's like 90% of the other things on ED's wishlist: "Not until the new engine", if at all. Since we have not heard anything about plans for it earlier than this, my guess is that they have not considered it yet and that depending on how easy/fast it would be to implement they might give it a go. Depends on how much they think they NEED a new comms system. However, since most simmers have a rather strong opinion regarding the realism of voice comms, they might decide it's important. Lock On doesn't even have control of taxiway from the tower via comms. As it stands now you just taxi wherever you want. On a side note: For inflight comms - I would say that more "random" chatter might not be realistic anyways. From an army perspective, most vehicles (and helicopters) have several radio frequencies preloaded into their vehicle before embarking on a mission. While operation remains normal, you stay on the lowest tier of your comms (just between you and the other vehicles in your team). If something hits the fan and you need to request backup/airstrikes/medivac/ect ect then you go to a specific channel for that. THEN you MIGHT hear other teams/units radioing for the same stuff. But normally you only hear your own flight/tasking/convoy, just as in lock on. It would be neat, but they would also have to simulate other units operating in your area as well (ie: a dynamic campaign system).....ACTUALLY rethinking it....Since you are flying attack helicopters, if the mission designer made you an escort for a convoy, it would be nice if the convoy "commander" contacted you via commas when they got hit and told you which direction/which building they were being attacked from...And rethinking it AGAIN...I think that this sort of situation is already possible with the new mission editor via triggers and custom voice samples. So I suppose it's already possible...It's just not automatic... And on another note: New and more active traffic control for airbases would be nice. Would be cool if each airport had a different voice (male1=krymsk/male2=anapa/female1=krasnodar) too.
-
I suppose if you could show them a viable reason why you'd be able to help them with testing (previous experience bug-testing play-testing for a gaming company for example) then they might CONSIDER you...But I would still say it was a long shot. They've already got enough testers methinks...
-
< Most definitely. Would love to hear more radio chatter. Was just waiting for a reply from ed so that we'd have something more than just speculation to discuss.
