Advice on engine management in dogfight?
Krupi replied to jasonstory44's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
I think you have just pointed out your issues you cannot climb with full power for too long in a dogfight as invariably at some point you will lose speed and going below 180mph at full boost will blow your engine. Try and get into the habit of lowering power during extended climbs? Also you need to keep an eye on altitude if the supercharger kicks in that could over stress the engine as well. With dives use more power the engine won't die with max power as the speed helps the cooling, the key is to keep the aircraft from going above 460mph max with gentle elevator inputs or your wings will shear off. -

Sounds very close to what I do. When Normandy arrives we will really have to cruise at 6 boost and 2400 rpm to get the distance :) I have tested going at full throttle and rpm at 3000m and ran out of fuel (~20 mins)before blowing my engine :D that shows just how key the speed is to keeping the engine cool. -

No no no, to get full performance you have to adjust your throttle and rpm. -

Yes, I taxied to the airfield with my rpm lever full back and blew the engine before take off :megalol: I keep the rpm at around 1000/1500 for taxi and 2850 for take off and leave it there, occasionally I dare to go full 3000 in a dogfight however target fixation has taught me to use it sparingly! -
Any chance of some more details on the new damage model :music_whistling: pretty please :D

Well that is not what I was anticipating, thanks ED it looks like home :D

:shocking: I KNEW IT! But they might as well have with that 30mm cannon, it is a beast!

Hi Jason, What altitude are you finding this happening? If you are quite high ~18,000ft then it might be because you haven't turned on the fuel pump switch... See Chucks guide, page 30 https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-uSpZROuEd3Y1dhWFhKSVpPbms/view In a dogfight you can easily keep the RPM at 2800-2850 and at 12 boost without worrying about overheating as long as your speed does not fall below 180mph, in which case you need to get your speed back or reduce your boost to 8. See page 50 of chucks guides regarding engine management.... :D -
Here is the piece from his book if anyone is interested... https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=cLvFDAAAQBAJ&pg=PT97&lpg=PT97&dq=brian+kingcome+a+willingness+to+die+blackout&source=bl&ots=8H_uCpKrcd&sig=JBGxZuKTUsQ7jmDi15tKM7i3RnE&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjt2IP7oJPSAhWGLMAKHVpPCKQQ6AEIKjAD#v=onepage&q=blacking%20out&f=false

Thanks for the quick reply Yo-Yo, so it is just the "sensitivity"/balance of the elevators that creates this impression? Also what is your thoughts of this? https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=183120

Yesterday I was reading a book by Brian Kingcome where he describes using blackouts to push the limit of his aircraft and avoid the guy getting on his tail, he states that he could still keep control of the aircraft... why is it modelled like you have passed out and yet still hear the engine sounds in DCS? By the sounds of it you should be able to retain control of the aircraft? Is it that there is a kind of sweet spot before losing control and blacking out completely?
-
Does anybody else find that they happen more in the spitfire than in any other aircraft? I get the impression it takes a hell of a lot longer to recover as well, how is the system modelled is it based on G or changed per A/C?
-
Awesome :D So we might stumble upon Rommel in his Horch staff car! ;)
-
I am guessing from that post that you don't have brakes set to an axis or do not have an axis free?
-
It will not be 'better' than the 109, don't worry you will still have a UFO advantage over the allied aircraft. It will be an update from pacific theatre mustang to a western front theatre....& unfortunately it won't make a huge difference to the status quo. That will hopefully come with an improved damage model.

+1 I agree -
The same one I am in, you can definitely one shot currently with a 30mm... There are plenty of videos showing it.

It wasn't only the tail ;) -
Spitfire first take-off; first "landing" observations
Krupi replied to beagleRampant's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Once you get your head around the break management and appreciate that ful power should not be used for take off it is strange jumping back into the other aircraft, I wouldn't say it jis easier though... Now in terms of performance in the air, well unfortunately no sim can truly model the physical advantages that some aircraft had over others. The spitfire had light controls compared to the other aircraft which was an advantage in real life, however in the sim it means you can over stress the aircraft quite easily... -
+1 I also don't think that the P-51 MG are as bad as you like to make out.

[INVESTIGATING] Losing 1 wing and keeping ...
Krupi replied to Anatoli-Kagari9's topic in Bugs and Problems
Perhaps it is an issue with the visual damage model, it shows the whole wing blown off however the damage model only registers part of the wing as damaged? -
I don't expect ED to invest in something like a B-17 they have a lot already planned, however the third-party definitely could and if VEAO make a Lancaster I personally think it would sell quite well.
-
I have to disagree with that, it just needs to be relatively close. 50 cals are not as bad as you are implying, they need work but they aren't terrible. Don't expect to have anywhere near the same impact as the 20/30mm, i imagine it will be the improved damage model that really gives any improvement.

In that case I would ask Ells & Pman for the office address. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=127100 Thanks for your commitment, although I would suggest a kidney I hear they are much sought after on the black market.

Out of interest was it a widely used practice?
