It is ignorant to set pre-conditions for ignorance... same goes for setting conditions for combat so that one aircraft is better.. and then to say this is the general case :-)
-
Not entirely... IL2 is not the only resource and there are plenty good websites on the FW (and other aircraft). Now whether this constitutes any form of research that is debatable.. whether test data or combat reports from any institution are reliable.. that is another thing all together, considering all the variables and controversies. Sorry...heavier in wing loading, so bringing the weight down helps put it on par with the allied fighters. One reason why the outboard cannons were done away with. The P38 is the 'first strike fighter' of WW2 before the P51 and FW190. It's not maneuverable in the old DF sense, but tactical use of its strengths make it a very capable contender.... :-)

AFAIR there are a few Russian combat, and aircraft comparison reports that indicate the blowing off of ammo. This was sometime ago so exactly where these are.. I'm not sure. In any event.. it makes common sense when attacking or defending against other fighters for the FW190 to 'offload', as it was a heavier aircraft, so I personally could accept this, if the reports are vague about this. One is unlikely to find this type of thing in 'officialdom' anyway.

FW190 pilots were known to fire a lot of ammo off early in a DF.. they had plenty of it and the reasons for doing this are mentioned already. Some pilots would fire off half their ammo before going into a DF with allied fighters - makes aircraft lighter and get's rid of the 'bomb' in the wings. Also what's with the AI FW190 happily doing rolls 'on a sunday holiday camp', instead of doing some fighting ??

ah.. I see Thanks

OK.. nowdays that's with Hi-tech GSuits (if they exist)... back in '52 it's your own 'body an all' :)
-
To go back to the OT I think you're talking more of the yaw inertia.. which I agree, it needs more damping. At 400mph... there would be significant forces on all control surfaces that the pilot would have to counteract... Some 'useless information' => IL2 has modeled this years back. : )
-
I wouldn't be too sure about that.. :) the power to weight ratios, prop wash..etc.. is so much more on RCs, add a bigger tail section and you have very sensitive controls.. especially wrt rudder.

How does one get a FW190 on a single quick mission.. or are there missions to download ? I'm on version124 :)

Well.. I went to a SAAF vets meet, and there the old guys, who were in Korea'51/2 (I think the year was) were discussing 12Gs in a P51. As you said.. they would normally do up to 9Gs.. 12G's was the exception, and then the ground crew would give the a/c a complete overall. They really appreciated our interest in their time and history.. they were actually crying with emotion.

Not sure whether this has been mentioned before - found it on the banana forum. http://freechecklists.net/

I hope all is going well with the FM ??? I'm only to eager to kick P51 butt.. big time :) Now don't downgrade the Dora FM dude.. wink wink nudge nudge... har har!!

As the title says.... Are there any updates/news on a flyable Dora. :)

Rudder pedals. They are really necessary?
Der_Fred replied to GriffonBR's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Could it be that rudder pedals were standardised before twist-sticks were invented :) The wide pedals (although not necessary for gaming) helped with the 'torque' factor on real aircraft. This of course depends on the mechanical linkages. For gaming it depends on the accuracy of your sensors, so narrow pedals would be just as good. A lot of civvy aircraft have annoyingly narrow pedal spacing, such that I pity any BigFoot pilot. As for Pedals-vs-Twisty's.. I'd say pedals, for the basic reason that you must seperate your control 'linkages' for proper co-ordination. For example - try keep a twisty rudder position constant while moving the x/y axis all over the place... it's nearly impossible. There are also occasions (you won't find this in DCS to much) that rudder control can almost replace the other 2 primary surface controls, but you'll need wide pedals to do this with greater controllability : - ) -
This is from the IL2 forums... be flexible and learn something :-)

You don't need to go full power on take off. If you keep the tail wheel locked.. 'pull stick slightly back until you feel it' and wait till speed get to a few mph before take off. Here your rudder trim takes effect as you push stick slightly forward, and hold direction with rudder - it's only a sec or 2 before she come unstuck. Bank to the right slightly if your drifting.. wheels up and then start trimming. If you treat her like an animal, it'll behave like one. : - )

Before any mission the radio techies would plug in the required frequency crystals. This AFAIK was the balls up on Eagle Day for the Germans, when many squadrons did not get/receive the signal regarding frequency changes and the techies installed the wrong crystals... thus an ensuing comms miss-cordination added to the failure of that day.

A very good description from a 25 yr AG vet https://www.dropbox.com/s/4m8fc52j0k73ovj/Turn_Smart.flv This would be a good modelling exercise to check.. :)

So how about a new topic for the FW190+Dora and the ME109. These are obviously imminent 'DCS time' else they wouldn't have appeared in the mod/upgrades. Anyway.. I'm waiting for my girl name 'Dora'.. before I continue to blazen the skies. Winky!!

Trying to learn to fly this thing- Is it really possible?
Der_Fred replied to Charley's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Think of this sim as a real aeroplane. You first must read the 'user manual' - All of us RL pilots have too. Luckily enough you can prang this a/c with few consequences.. Next trick is Complex Engine Management (CEM)... You must become a 'Petrol-Head' before a 'Propellor-Head'. You. know.. those dials, switches and levers that you fiddle with. You must know these!! OK.. so you have that all wrapped. Rudder Pedals and Joystick are a basic essential, otherwise you'll have difficulty getting to the runway for takeoff. Call back later when you're done :-) -
Hmmmm! You obviously missed the salt in my post.. and obviously are unaware of the countless 'field-mods' done during the war. Sure the standard official documentation exists.. but do you wish to deny other obvious documentation that has been linked already regarding this subject. If it wasn't for the Russians.. we'd all be speaking German or Japanese.. don't you forget that :)
-
It's a funny thing though when you're a fighter pilot in RL. You go to your armorer Sargent and say to him... 'You know I don't seem to be able to kill at this range... and the bugger is getting away... But I'm sure I'd be able to down him at this range... what d'ya think' Armorer Sargent: 'No problem sir..we'll set the guns' And for the Grand Sake of me I cannot think why the Sargent would buck the 'Official DCS rules'... makes you think a bit.. doesn't it - At least the Russians had brains. :)
-
Maybe it's the same sound that comes from the airflow over the gun/wing extensions of the P51, but now over-emphasized in all aircraft. This was originally only a p51 phenomena.. ?

Damm.. I forgot to mention 'Chaos'... helps with understanding fluid mechanics, and similar scenarios
