DCS vs Other Sims, what makes the difference FM wise?
howie87 replied to USARStarkey's topic in Chit-Chat
PFM's: • Use a wider array of wind tunnel tests CFD methods for aerodynamics parameters calculations. • A higher level of aircraft construction details for forces calculations. For example: our landing gear model includes individual kinematics of retracting/extending is used to calculate its movement, servo-piston forces, etc. In such cases, we truly use real lengths, arms, etc. This also includes such items as a realistic simulation of airflow along the airframe due to the propeller or helicopter rotor thrust. • Realistic simulation of Flight Control, CAS and Autopilot systems. • Realistic simulation of Hydraulics, Fuel, Electrical, Engine and other systems influence flight characteristics. • Unprecedented access to test data packs. Basically every control/lifting surface is modelled according to real world data as far as lift and drag coefficients go. Then all the real world limits are imposed on that surface (max/min extension/retraction rates etc depending on hydraulic/electrical power available). On top of this, the engine model is working out how much thrust it can produce at a given air speed/altitude/temperature from real world data for each power setting. Then there are the automated control and autopilot systems which are modelled along with their authority limits and electrical/hydraulic availability. All this information is constantly being calculated in real time from complex algorithms. I'm sure there is a lot more than this going on behind the scenes as well, such as fuel/weight/balance and critical angle of attack calculations and all this data is tweaked slightly by the team in certain areas to perform more like the real aircraft based on feedback from real life pilots. That is why aircraft in DCS fly more like real aircraft than in any other simulation you will probably ever fly. -
It is implemented. You can see the weight change in the load out screen.
-
A) weight and drag B) Yes C) Moderately. More effective than than they were before 1.2.7 anyway.

Are we waiting for EDGE before this can be released or is that not required?
-
I think it should stay OFF if it has no power, SBY on standby and OPR when operating. Will have to check myself though.
-
Have you got one equipped on the aircraft? It will only activate if you are being painted and activate it with CMS Z in manual/semi modes. It will activate by itself if you are in Auto mode.

POLL: BEST PLANE IN A2A ROLE IN DCS WW2
howie87 replied to USARStarkey's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Well, the jug can out dive everything else on that list but climbing isn't its strong point. Probably a good plane to run away in though! -
A 2nd SSD - what should I buy?
howie87 replied to msalama's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'd also go Samsung Evo. I've got two Samsung drives and they're both excellent. -
NVidia Drivers Released 3/31/14 v335.23
howie87 replied to AtaliaA1's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I upgraded my 560Ti to a 770 and it was a nice jump in performance. 580 to 770 isn't quite as much of an upgrade though. DCS can't really make use of the hardware at the moment anyway so I'd wait for EDGE if you want to see some real improvements. The 900 series will probably be out by then! :D -
Is this bird still going to come with an English cockpit? My Russian isn't too good...

POLL: BEST PLANE IN A2A ROLE IN DCS WW2
howie87 replied to USARStarkey's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I voted for the Spitfire but the pilot who knows how to use his aircraft's strengths to his advantage and his enemies weaknesses against them will usually win. -
Your attention to detail is absolutely mind blowing. Very impressive stuff.
-
Yeah, I've done a few hard landings in the eagle without damaging the gear. Done a few harder ones that did damage it too! I'd say it seems about sturdy enough.
-
Wish we had contrails like this in DCS...

WIP DCS A-10C and Teamspeak 3 Integration
howie87 replied to Headspace's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Any word on this yet? I know we're not out of April yet but I'm hoping you'll come back to the dark side soon! Would quite like to stop having to stop teamspeak updating every time I use it! -
The problem with DCS for civil aviation is the tiny theatre, poor ATC implementation and lack of navigation aids. FSX, P3D and X-Plane have pretty much an entire world to fly in with accurate runways, frequencies, terrain, weather etc. Those guys don't want to fly their tube liners in circles around Georgia while trying to avoid being shot down. They want to file an IFR flight plan across europe or the Atlantic and use Vatsim to talk to real controllers on the ground. It's a completely different kind of simulation and something that DCS just isn't able to offer right now.

Next DCS (US) Fixed Wing Aircraft Wish List
howie87 replied to diecastbg's topic in DCS Core Wish List
The only problem with a phantom is getting dual seat to work. Now a Northrop F-5, there's something I could get behind. It would make for a great MiG-21 adversary too as it's much more nimble than the F4. Eventually I'd love to see something like that for use as an aggressor in Nevada. Someone could make a 'MiG-28' skin for it :D -
The thing that worries me most about the consumer version of the rift is that I'm probably going to wind up selling a kidney and buying a pair of Titan Z's just to get nice frame rates with everything maxed out... This will be the greatest thing to ever happen to the PC hardware market. 3 year old graphics cards and slow CPU's just aren't going to cut it anymore. Low frame rates are annoying but acceptable to some people on PC monitors but in VR it will be like a pneumatic drill going off inside your head.

F15C AFM too sensitive to control (CH Fightstick)
howie87 replied to uboats's topic in DCS: Flaming Cliffs
I'm not too worried about the sensitivity at the moment as both the Huey and P-51 were much more twitchy and sensitive before the flight models were finalised. This is still a beta and there are still some obvious issues to sort out. Give it time and I'm sure it will be amazing. Belsimtek hasn't let us down so far. -
If only it were that simple...
-
Agreed... Just make it like the A-10's The 3 buttons idea sounds like a nightmare.

Come on now, let's just have 1980's-2000's fast jets. Old enough to be declassified, new enough to be totally awesome. That's my cup of tea right there...

That was August last year right? When Wags said we wouldn't hear anything more for at least another year? -

Why release something out of the blue when they can just torture us for years instead?! They've been doing it so long now, they must enjoy it... -
New nVidia 337.50 Beta driver - free up CPU overhead
howie87 replied to K2mil's topic in Community News
I will try when I get home. The latest 'stable' drivers for my GTX 770 cause a load of blue and red artifacting in X-Plane anyway so I want to get shot of them ASAP.
