Why do some helos take off from runways?
GunfighterSIX replied to McBlemmen's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
I dont know about all that. Yes when I do a full rolling takeoff from a runway it is usually for practice, not weight issues. But there are a lot of other organizations out there that are flying heavy that need to do a little roll. Remember you only need to get to 16 to 20 knots to help you out. "ETL" Also if I am already taxing and my hover checks were completed on an earlier take off, I will just increase my roll and take off. It saves on the breaks and saves on the power and saves on time. I am not really trying to showing off, even though it looks cool. As for the the runway thing. At larger airports ATC usually keeps us away from the runways and from the main flow of traffic. Its just better for everyone. At smaller airports helicopter pilots might use the pattern for practice, but you will general find most helicopters avoid all that mess and come straight in if its safe. Especially if that helicopter is stationed at that airport. Most small airports runways wont support the weight of my helicopter so I have to land to the grass anyways. Every pilot has his way of doing things, every origination and airport has their own rules, so try not to assume we are doing something for just one reason. -
You dont need force feed back, they can just reduce the effects of the forces acting on the helicopter. For example they just wont put in a large TRQ effect. This will help to simulate the MMU's "Collective to Yaw" function with out needing to have force feed back. Keep in mind that the the MMU is also backed up by other systems that put input directly into the the rotor and not the flight controls, so force feed back is not needed there ether. The point is that there are a lot of work arounds to the MMU that will still allow for a realistic simulator.

A "Slick Huey" was a transport Huey and hey still had door guns. With the door guns you still need to have hard points on. The Medevac and civilian Huey's you can turn off the hard points. They still haven't fixed it where some Huey's in your mission can have hard points off while others have it on. This also removes flares and engine covers? They also haven't fixed how you see other aircraft in compared to how you see yourself in MP. You can be configured the same but other players aircraft will look different. Don't let this confuse you.

Good call, some EGT limits to pull from what little max trq available the Huey has would really help the realism out.

If you guys are trying to do running landing to avoid VRS then there is something wrong. Just keep your speed up if you have high rates of descent. You can land the helicopter straight down if you want. Just keep the your rate of descent below 200 to 300 FPM. If you are low on power, which is what is kill most people, not VRS. Then stay above ETL until you are in ground effect. (one rotor disk about the ground) ETL is 16 to 24 Knots, so always land into the wind. If you have 10 knots of wind, then you may only need a few knots of ground speed to keep about ETL. And keep you approach slow but above ETL and start father out. Set up early and keep the rotor loaded. Don't come in fast with the engines spoiled down then try to pull the guts out of it. Then engines wont be able to catch up, your rotor will droop and you will fall out of the sky. Then you will be on the forms crying about VRS when you were never in it. You just stopped flying. VRS is not really the problem for most of you, its power management. If descent rate is high keep speed up. If speed is slow keep descent slow. Plain ever move and stay ahead of the helicopter. Sorry I didn't convert units for you guys. I also dont agree with situation 2 Helicopter pastern in USA are 700 feet AGL though. FAR AIM

They are to good during the day, and they are almost useless at night. I am sure they are working on it.

Good point. What would happen to us guy's in the military if people found out our true ranking system from a war that happened 40 years ago? I know I wouldn't feel safe flying anymore. I want to thank you for saving us all. If only this knowledge wasn't already open source and released by the military...

The pilots should be warrants. Not that I am bias or anything. Not that many commissioned officers flying compared to warrants. Senior Captains start losing flight time drastically as they are assigned to other jobs. Officers lead and do paper work, warrant officers do most of the flying in the Army, that's just the way it is. lots of CW2's and CW3's. We have alot of E5's and E6's as our crew chiefs. E5 range for gunners +/_ works. And remember good pilots switch seats ever flight, left and right. At least they do now, PIC or not, doesn't mater the seat.

Slightly OT - but worth posting... (Dustoff book)
GunfighterSIX replied to BeachAV8R's topic in DCS: UH-1H
Great book!! -
I noticed that the Huey flare launchers shoot directly away from the helicopter. Pointing back. Where as the flare launchers on real helicopters shoot forward and down. This keeps the flares with the helicopter long enough for the missile to find the flares. If the flares shoot away to quickly the missilewill just keep going after the helicopter. The racks on the Huey before the 1.2.7 beta seemed to look correct to me. Added a few clips because I know someone is going to argue with me, even though I was looking at the flare racks on the side of my helicopter yesterday.

I made a few mission using my fast roping triggers. This is the training mission for those mission. you can play it 1.2.7 if you want, just ignore the red smoke. If you want simulated weight then play it on 1.2.6 single player. Land at the red smoke before each drop. I never updated the briefing and audio for the weight modifications, so sorry for the confusion. I have not done to much retesting, but it was working great a few patches ago. I have some mission to go along with this but I am not ready for release. https://www.dropbox.com/s/y5vvtdhf2xtu63b/Fast%20rope%20Practice%20single%20player.miz

Falcon you are 100% correct, those systems are there, you need to learn how to use them and fly with them. Leave SAS on! The systems are designed to take work load of the pilot so he can use the aircraft for what it is designed for, killing stuff. Using Flight director or route mode or whatever is up to the user, but leave the SAS on. Is it good to practice with it off ever once in a while? yes, but learning to fly the helicopter with that stuff off is stupid. I didn't learn to fly a uh-60 with the boost, SAS and AFCS off every flight or maneuver, that would be retarded. Once you have the aircraft figured out and you are comfortable, then start advance your skills and challenging your self.

Looks amazing, I have been following you work for a while know and I can't wait to get my hands on it. I was wondering, are you going to go with just the AN/ASN-128? or upgrade to the AN/ASN-128B or D? We have been using the AN/ASN-128B/D's in the uh-60A/L's for a long time. It integrates both Doppler and Gps. We dont use the Doppler part anymore, its pain in the ass to keep updating with known points to keep it accurate and on course and its not near is accurate as Gps. Not sure what the real Bo-105 used but I cant imagine only having Doppler after all these years. Keep of the great work.

Ground mounted Heay weapons?
GunfighterSIX replied to GunfighterSIX's topic in How To Mod for DCS World
His download link wont work. And is that gun AI? -
I am wondering if we are going to get any more ground mounted heavy weapons, like M2 or Dshk? I want a chalange for the helicopter's other than AK's and RPG's. But not always as bad as a ZU-23. Does some one have the skill to model a Dshk? Maybe convert the assault boat gun to a gun on a stand?

If you could upgrade the Ka-50, what would you do?
GunfighterSIX replied to Fishbreath's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Who do you think they used to take out the Iraq radar system in the golf war? Helicopters. They can fly below radar detection and kill the sam's. DCS does not have proper train modeling for that type of masking though. Wouldn't be my first choice of jobs though. -
Also the axis of rotation is at the rotor head. The helicopter hangs below the wing's. Mi-8 tail rotor is closer to the axis of rotation.
-
The roll of the helicopter is the result of translating tendency. Your tail rotor does not make you roll, you role the helicopter to keep the tail rotor from pushing or pulling you left or right (dependent on helicopter.) I have flown heavy, light and helicopter's with tail rotors in different positions relative to the tail boom, it does not matter the effect is that same, you have to compensate for the translating tendency. And the Tail boom might not me the longitudinal axis for the MI-8, and a higher tail rotor inst going to increase the roll in the helicopter, it might decrease it though.

The last thing we need is an SH-60. This game is about fighting wars, so if we have to put a 60 in then let it at least be a uh-60. Being a blackhawk pilot might be influencing my opinion though. Once we get some more war fighting equipment in then we can bring in the Navy "civilian" helicopters :D
-
I promise CG is not handled properly. There have been real world crashes where the helicopter noised over and spun in the ground after just loosing the weight of tail rotor components. This aircraft lost 70% airframe behind the mast. A fuel imbalance in the KA-50 shows more of an effect than the tail falling off.
-
KA-50 like most large helicopters is probably not controllable with a full hyd failure. I know the UH-60 can't fly with a full loss, the controls lock up. And if you lost the back half of your helicopter your Center of gravity would shift so much that you would flip over forward.

VRS Shaking for Ka-50 Cockpit (V1.2.6)?
GunfighterSIX replied to Devrim's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Skull leader, the shaking you are talking about when slowing down in the MI-8 and UH-1h is from transverse flow not VRS, unless you are descending near vertically then it is VRS. We often ride those shakes in when flying an approach to helps us gauge a nice slow approach. http://www.copters.com/aero/transverse.html -
Are external fuel tanks going to be an option?
