For those on the sideline about buying Normandy...
aleader replied to Mr_sukebe's topic in DCS: Normandy 1944
I posted already in the DLC maps section (didn't realize this one was separate), but is the open beta required to see the updates in the Normandy map, or was it moved to stable already in a previous update? -
I don't own it but have it now in the free trial. I am on stable release but do have open beta installed too. Are the recent improvements made to the Normandy map available on Stable? This isn't indicated anywhere that I can find. Also, why doesn't the Normandy map have it's own thread here (in DLC maps)?

Yah, I just figured this out too. Best to save miles for campaigns as you don't lose out on new miles that way.
-
Yep, guess so. I didn't even think to look at the guy's handle (that's what she said). Can anyone comment on the ticket system for support? Is this the only way to ask a support question (on the forum)?
-
Order #938284 I tried submitting a ticket, but it expects me to upload a file (why?) for a payment question and I was unable to proceed without uploading something. I recently purchased the F86 Sabre and Museum Relic campaign. I realize (now) that I get no additional miles for the Sabre purchase as I used miles to buy it (yes, I know this caveat is posted). This is a real disappointment as it effectively more than halves the number of miles I receive (could have received 2490 for the Sabre). Next time I'll spend the miles on campaigns instead as I am forgoing less miles on those. Anyways, I should have received approximately 500 miles for the purchase of the campaign, but didn't get any (they were separate transactions...Sabre and Museum Relic). When can I expect my miles to be added? Thanks. EDIT: I see now that a select few campaigns don't have ED miles, but I'm not sure if it just shows up like that because I already bought it and would be inelgible for miles now?

This just happened to me about 10 mins ago. I'm trying the free trial, stable version. I was on an Instant action ground attack on Caucasus. I had switched to F10 and then back to the cockpit and the sound in the cockpit disappeared. External sounds still work fine. Haven't been able to reproduce it though. Tried all 3 maps, in and out of F10 and all views, no issues.

I looked at this campaign too, but isn't it using modern assets? Is it a good enough campaign that one can overlook that?
-
I'm trying it in the free play and really liking it...except the gunsight, need to figure that out. I'd like to get the Yalu campaign but don't want to also have to buy the WW2 assets pack. This should be a bundle deal...F86 and/or Mig 15 and the assets pack and/or Yalu campaign. That would convince me to buy right now. I don't think the assets pack is even worth the 50% discount. User made content for the F86 (other than skins) is sparse and there is NO campaign included, contrary to what some have said. Having said all that, if you liked playing MP on the cold war servers, I can see it being totally worth the 50% discount price.

Yah, I probably spent $400 on maps/modules this year alone (2019/20 so far). A $50/year subscription fee would probably be a lot cheaper in the long run, so long as I would have access to EVERYTHING all the time.
-
Steel Beasts PRO PE also has a subscription OPTION. Now, it's two completely different games, but I bought a one-year sub ($39USD) as buying the full game is $125 USD, and when major updates happen, you have to pay on top of that to get them (the move to version 3.0, 4.0, etc). It will take 3 years to cover the cost this way, and by then I'd have to pay more to get the newer version anyways. I may not even be playing it that long, who knows? I think with DCS, they may have to charge for big upgrades like full game engine upgrades, otherwise we may never see a new engine that actually has modern support for API's and multi-core CPU's. Just the nature of the beast with niche games like this. There's a reason there are literally no other military sims in existence anymore. Used to be that's all there was on PC, but they either went under, or just dropped sims altogether (i.e. Microprose, Jane's, etc.). I mean, they already sell the maps and things like the NS430 and WW2 Assets Pack.

I haven't played IL2 in a while, but I read that the latest patch was supposed to have greatly improved the AI and even the damage model. It seems they're competing with each other (ED and Oleg) now for WW2 dominance, which is a good thing for us. EDIT: Just noticed that the big patch came out today...

I use them in DCS (or, used them) for the A10C and will be setting them up for the Harrier and F18C once I get an 11.6" screen to mount them on. I have them currently mounted to an old 22" LCD screen (1680x1050), but it was too big and heavy for the arm I had it mounted to and would constantly droop, which was really annoying. I digress. They are really useful once they are set up, and will free up a lot of buttons on your HOTAS. I had to use the DCS Virtual Cockpit Server (https://bit-shift.com/dcsvcserver/help) to get the A10C to play nice, but was able to use that to modify and figure out the F15C. I haven't tried it yet with the Harrier/F18. The other really good option is setting custom snap views to the MFD's:

Possible PC Performance Issue with DCS
aleader replied to TheStrikeEagle's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
If you guys are playing on Open Beta it's well-known now that there are serious perfromance issues with it, especially with frame drops. My rig is far lower than yours (i5 4670K@4.5GHz, GTX 1070, 16GB Ram, 1440p, 75Hz) and I run higher settings than that on stable. I was on open beta and switched back because of the erratic FPS. Not helpful though if you play a lot of multiplayer. -
[REPORTED] Low FPS and Low GPU/CPU/RAM Usage
aleader replied to GetMessi's topic in Game Performance Bugs
I posted in another thread, but yah, it's DCS, not your hardware. Same issues, low CPU, RAM and GPU usage, low temps, low FPS when over structures that 'sticks' and never recovers. -
I have been doing some testing in open beta the last few days as something is going on for sure, and I'm trying to nail down what my upgrade path should be for this game when I decide to do it...won't be now as the CDN $ has dropped a lot due to the oil prices, and I feel 'icky' if I don't get a deal on something ;). I'm in Open Beta, F18, free flight Nevada, I take the same route dropping low over vegas each time. I play in 1440p, Freesync monitor, 75Hz, fps capped at 72 in Nvidia Control Panel. I have mostly high settings, MSAA x2, 'enhance application and MFAA on in control panel. I run Afterburner to test. My system is not stupid expensive, but it's worked well for me: Win 10, i5 4670k@4.5GHz, EVGA GTX 1070, 16GB 1866 HyperX RAM, install on SSD (open and stable versions, different drives). I use Trackhat for head tracking. I get 72 fps when the flight starts and it levels off around 65-68 until I start to get near Vegas as I drop to about 1000 ft. At a certain point (seems like the same point to me) the fps drops to 39 and then to about 36 at 500 ft over the city and doesn't recover, even when I go back to altitude, like it's 'stuck'. My CPU usage never tops 63% (at 4500MHz), GPU never goes above 75%, RAM usage about 10GB. These stay relatively consistent no matter what settings I change. I've dropped MSAA to off, cockpit textures to 512 (from 1024 every frame), Shadows to medium and low (from high), visibility from Ultra down to medium, and even tried dropping my resolution to 1080p (doesn't look great with a 32" monitor, although it wasn't as bad as I expected). I only drop a single setting at once and re-test, then change it back and try something else. I saw zero change in my FPS down low. The only change was an increase to a steady 72fps up high, but the aliasing is terrible with MSAA turned off. I get a slight but perceptible stutter on the terrain going by that I now see is caused by my Freesync switching off under 45 fps...at least I know it's working. There is no stuttering whatsoever until it drops below 45. So, what's going on here? From the usage it doesn't appear to be my CPU or GPU being limited, although I suspect dropping a 2070 super of 5700XT in would bump things up significantly. I've seen big performance gains in benchmarks of games that use Vulkan with AMD cards which is where I would lean if DCS gets Vulkan support. Other than that is this just bad open beta performance? I have two installs so I'm also going to try this on stable.
-
Yah, that's probably it, I'll check thanks.
-
Is the F18 not also FBW though? Flies very differently, for me at least. If that's just how it is, ok...I'll just have to get used to it.
-
Trying it on the free trial. I set up the controls as I always do and right away noticed some serious 'lag' in the Mirage controls. It seems very stiff and unresponsive compared to other planes (i.e. I need to pull/push back very hard to get it to lift or descend...roll seems ok). I thought my control setup may be to blame, so I put curves at 0, eliminated deadzone and reset and re-did everything, tried stable and open beta, same thing. I am able to get it to 6G in turns, but it just seems like it takes a lot of force to do it. Is this normal? Fly-by-wire thing?
-
Are there any default snap views for the MFDs or do I have to make custom ones? They are a real PITA to see, even with head tracking. I have Cougar MFDs but am waiting to get a decent 11.6" screen to put them on as my old 22" monitor is too heavy (used to use it for the A10C).

I agree the training missions are top notch for the Harrier, excellent work. Only thing I had an issue with was the usual disappearing text before I could find what I was looking for, although it was much better than the F18 missions. Also had an issue with the waypoint offset part of the Nav training. Is it possible to scroll the moving map around? I couldn't locate the offset point. I may have missed how to do that.
-
I noticed there was no campaign too, but ended up buying it anyways...free trial successful ED! Should be more of them throughout the year, and MAKE THEM LONGER than 2 days please...5 to 7 days like other, much easier-to-learn games do (I know it wasn't practical with this trial schedule). I was thinking of the F16 too, but didn't get a chance to really try it out. Harrier has been on my radar since it came out. As has been said, the training missions for the Harrier are the best I've seen, and it looks like there's 100+ hours just doing them.
-
Trying the training missions and did a coldstart (instant action) and I cannot get the UFC to come on to enter coordinates. In the navigation training mission you have to enter coordinates and I can't see anything I'm typing. I have used the one in the Hornet no problem. When I press the TMR or TOO buttons the display works, but how do I enter coordinates (i.e. to change a waypoint)? EDIT: I wasn't in DATA mode on the MPCD...works now.

I have to admit, I'm enjoying the free trial. I've had the Harrier on my list for a few years now but always avoid it due to the negative posts regarding the state of the systems/bugs, etc. I love the A10C and also have all of the helicopters and the F18/Supercarrier....I think this would complement the A10C and my TM Cougar panels nicely, no? Anyone know if the Harrier will integrate with the Supercarrier module? I know I can land on any of them, but will it 'integrate' like the F18 will? Anyone want to take a stab at convincing me NOT to buy it at 50% off? It will likely be my last module for a while (until the Hind that is) as I still haven't even close to mastered the F18.
-
Yah, I did a search and found my options. That thread is from 2013 and there is no way I would ever be able to find it without knowing exactly what I'm looking for (I don't spend every day on these forums). This title: "GUIDE / INFO : DCS Updater Usage, Version Numbers, Module IDs" is not intuitive at all. How about 'How to Install Open Beta' instead? Is there an award for making things complicated now? Not in any of the jobs I've worked in....they tend to frown on that. Making a free trial as difficult as possible. If you go to Steam, there is no way you would ever know that you need open beta for this module. I've said it before, these guys could use a marketing class...

I have Standalone stable and would also like to know what the procedure is. Can't seem to get an answer anywhere other than using a 'Skatezilla' utility. Surely it's as easy as Steam? ED boned this up again as it doesn't even indicate on the Steam page that you need open beta for this. I guess I just won't try and won't buy if I can't figure out how to install both open beta and stable at the same time. And is the open beta still laggy and broken as most have suggested?
