Does any one know how large a map could be? Currrently we have the entire Black Sea, most of that is just flat ground. Could ther be a map that has the entire Mediterrainian sea? What about Pakistan and India would these be too large memory wise to have in DCS? I wouldent mind a Korea Map but could that same map have parts of Russia all of Japan and maybe Taiwan or is this just entirely too large to have in one game. Amalahama, I like the idea of getting us the tools to create maps but for consistancy sake there needs to be a way to manage that information. I would hate to see 5 koreas and 6 Iraqs all with there merits and short commings. If ED could give us the world broken in grids as a starting point then maybe the community could build the cities and towns as well as the airbases. Kind of like google earth you have the terrain and textures if you want to model your own town fine, it will take time but here is Sketchup and the tools to place th finished object in the World. Go take pics of your land marks and build the model textue it and put it in the map, repeat untill a city or region is complete then upload your creation so others can download and enjoy. Google does this as well as a game called SimCity. I wouldent imagine that this would be hard to do but from what I read about how ED creates maps it take a long time to manually place buildings and Roads.

Thanks very informative.

Let's hope no one has a Bofors 40mm AA gun in this game
Wdigman replied to Yellonet's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I like the Idea of more AAA in DCS... The visual AAA is more of a challenge, you dont get a warning just traces racing by the Cockpit! Keeps one from getting careless during a mission. -
Seems like there are lots of questions about the game itelf What flyable, how things look etc.. but are there any changes or improvements to moviemaking in DCS? Not that I could think of any improvements to be made. Perhaps a Camera that can be placed in the mission editor. Then you have preset camereas looking at things specifically when the mission starts. Just a thought.

Probably a dumb question, I asked this at an airshow and just got an generic answer, but what does the AN/AQL 144 and ATIRCM/DIRCM do, Becides "tell the missle not to go here". How does it work? Do they fire a laser at the IR missle head blinding it or burning out the seeker's optics. Probably not a question for this thread but we are on topic of countermeasures. Also how do the IR warning sensors distinguish from a sam launch (IR) and flares or reflections from the ground. Just asking.

For now it looks like the future Releases are... From the SimHQ link on the main Page of DCS So i guess we will have to wait for the A-10C. Personally the next fast jets should be a red blue combo with ground capabilities. Not sure if they should "wait" for one of the planes to be done before the other to release a pair of planes. From a business perspective you can make money on one jet to fund the other, however it looks like ED has the manpower from the Sim HQ article to work on two planes at once.

Lots of good ideas, I like the one where you can get certain raidio commands by a wav file. Could add some humor in the game. "Enfield 11 requesting flyby. Negative Enfield 11 the pattern is full." So there is a trigger I could use should you approach a tower at a certain angle. One trigger I would like to see is something that could be tied to a victory condition say some armor is approachig a town, for the mission to be lost the armor must remain on station for 15 min and be at 60% strength. For ground units this could be used as a way to take ground. For aircraft a condition would be an AWAC you escort needs to stay on station for 3 hrs. Mud movers may just have to stay in an area for an hour for a victory. Radio triggers combined with other triggers would make CAS missions more realistic. You fly over an area and you get a desprate call for air support. Solve the problen then you have 15 more minutes to patrol. Fail in that air support you fail the mission, and so on.

Well I think its good enough for now, in past forums there was mention of using higher polygon counts in the terrain for the choppers, they even experimented with speed trees. Speed trees may still be in a later module but a lot of bugs need to be fixed first. Animated people were shown but not promised in the first release. Before logging in I read the article about DCS being shown at a conference in LA it appears that the A-10 and Apache are much further along than thought. Most of my time and most of our time will be consumed trying to fly these new air units. I like the A-10 and am pretty sure I will look like a noob when the new flight model comes out, happens every time a new sim comes out. This and figuring out the new campaign manager. As for new maps Its my understanding that the hardest part is placing buildings and roads, the expansion into Georgia took a lot of time to create. Perhaps someone from ED can tell us how long it takes to create a city in the current map. Say Istanbul in Turkey, Howe long to create roads textures and to place all the buildings. Its my understanding that it is all done manually. I would be willing to create terrains and place buildings/ roads but there are no development tools for that. The point I am trying to make is I would rather have DCS released sooner than later and have many modules to pick from such as terrain and scenery later. Sounds like the wait would be pretty short anyway. The first release is not going to have everything but it is better that what we have now. Remember if you want the ultimate realism go out side and get your pilots license or join the air force. Most of us would not be able to handle the G-forces anyway.:megalol: I leave this after noon for Las Vegas from Omaha I will try to get pics of real terrain from altitude and compare it to whats in LOMAC.

If memory serves me correctly... Too lazy to find it in the LOMAC forum; wasent all screen shots that were shown on the LOMAC forum taken in FC using FC shaders and shadows. All of the 3rd party trucks and tanks were rendered outside of the game on a few threads then you would see the same equipment in the sim, that sim I believe someone said was FC. Remember the European armor. It is also possible that those screens we have been looking at are indeed in BS but the graphics setting reduced as to not give too much away.

So if one were to think creatively this could be the start of a Warcraft type game/ sim. So my Brother in law could be playing a SOCOM type sim and call me in my A-10 should my cousin who is commanding a column of T-80 tanks near a town he is engaging the enemy? If this is possible then the future here is definately bright one.

Question about the "modularity" of DCS ..
Wdigman replied to ANGST's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
It would be interesting and breathe longevity into the game if there were additional maps. The whole world would be my hope. A low poly model of all regions with simple bitmaps showing locations of major cities. Kind of like how Turkey is done now, its in the game but there is no terrain, cities or airfields. We have to put those static objects there if we want to land or fly over Istanbul for example. It would be nice to at least have the terrain though. Flying over the Alps would be boring if it were flat. I wouldnd get bored flying over the Western US if it were an option. Red Dawn map anyone. -
Well it is a whole new ball game so I guess anything is possible. The quote in my opinion says it right there. It may be buggy at first but it looks like they are going to have a go at multiplayer two seaters.

Interesting location warthogmadman987... :v:

It would make sense that a demo would be reliced only after some of the basic training videos are done. With so much detail and the complexities of the KA-50 to just hae free flight could be someting people may find frustrating.

I guess DCS make everyone a newbie... Nothing like starting over.

Would you PAY the People Working on the Ground Texture Mods?
Wdigman replied to Boneski's topic in DCS Modding
Donations would work best, If someone truly creates top notch mods like Ironhand then he should be rewarded. However if money were to be made a lot of people could be making a lot of junk that is low quality and just fills a website with worthless addons. have seen this before. If such a site existed where you can download mods and donate to your fav modder then it needs a sort option so all the junk is at the bottom and the good stuff can be found quickly. Things need to be sorted by popularity. But then again the possibility for some one to make a little extra on the side may motivate some modelers who have real talent. Guess I am split on this one, the donate button sounds like a reasonable compramise. I definately would give money to some of the modders if the option existed. -
They should do this shortly sfter the relece fo BS. A Live QA session focus on the developement of BS and what didnt make it into the SIM vs what did. I would limit the questions about addressing bugs or where's my favorite jet. But it would be interesting to hear about all the struggles and sucesses for developing such a sim. Good topic.

3 miles per second? Does the S-400 have heat shielding? 761.2 mph is Mach 1 at sea level, 10,800 MPH is like Mach 10-11. I believe the space shuttle re enters at Mach 20 so how does the S400 not melt or burn up? The SR-71 would cruise near 2000 mph and had to overcome many issues with heat. Sure both technologies are from the 70s and earlier but materials still burn how does the S400 not burn up in flight or is this some made up number. Of course that could be the speed when the missle reaches low earth orbit.

Just a bone yard like the one near Tuscon Arizona. Yea I bet the Russians and Americans are really concerned about rotting planes from the mid 80s and prior. Now some investors may say "hey! I have a few million laying around maybe I should inquire about a MIG-21 or F-4.":smilewink: I wonder if they have any two seaters, you could take the girls on one hell of a weekend getaway, take that corvette boy!!!! Hmm there are A-10s in Tuscon now if I can only pick the right Lotto numbers.

can you post a KML file here?

Its been said in other forums that Eagle is working on a new Mission editor/ Campaign creator. In the last movie Edge there were troops that would move and shoot at you with small arms, add new terrain, new AI and other stuff we dont know about I am sure ED is very busy writing and debugging code. All of these screenshots are from the third party modeler so they probably do not have the new "World" to take the screens in. I would bet that the models we see here are in a FC terrain not BS. As for the buildings texture im sure that any one can change the skins just like the aircraft models if we know where they are. Cool screens though, keep posting.

Hopefully nothing comes of this, but it illustrates the political tension in the area. http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/08/07/russia.georgia.reut/index.html Does anyone who has seen the new map in detail know if this area is in BS? Is this the only area in the Black Sea where border tensions exist? I dont exactly follow the news day to day in that region of the world. What about the west side of the Black Sea, Romainia, Bulgaria, Ukraine? Guess no news is a good thing.
-
I agree Britgliderpilot, You cant get everything you want. Its only a game anyway. The best thing people can do is buy BS, afterall supporting ED in this way will raise money for the next sim. Afterall judging by the number of posts some have submitted and the time we all have spent reading the threads you already paid the $40.00. I like the A-10 but I will definately try out the Ka-50.

So the map in game is still the same size as FC but they added terrain to the SE through Georgia? Can any one speculate on how far south they developed the terrain? That movie was better than the announcement everyone wanted the first of July. I know not everything may or may not be included but still. Incredible.
