  1. I feel your pain. I built my own tracking clip but version one broke leaving me for just a day without and I felt totally lost. Needless to say version two was quickly assembled out of more robust materials. Any chance you could build something in the mean time? They're pretty cheap and easy to build and it doesn't have to look pretty. It just has to function until you can get a replacement.

  3. Just listen to that engine.. Sweeeet as a nut. Can practically hear every cylinder firing and it doesn't even sound like it's breaking a sweat. I'm thinking after the Hawk, the BF is next on my list :pilotfly:
  4. I've noticed it too however I've not flown the stang for a few months so wasn't too sure. I do seem to keep blowing up the engine a LOT even though I'm sure I'm as gentle as I used to be. Not really exceeding 2600 RPM and between 30 - 40" MP for cruise / pleasure flying. Just seems like the engine blows at every little thing..... Maybe it's me and lack of practice and has nothing to do with the high oil pressure?
  5. Some of you guys are more tallented than you think. It's not easy to draw freehand in some of these paint programs yet many of you have captured the likeness of the Hawk really well. Lots of different aproaches but all very effective.
  6. I was watching the live feed yesterday but they were having a few issues with valves and tanks and what not. They gave it their all to fix the tech issues right up until they lost the launch window. Missed today's coverage but glad they got it off the ground and back sucessfully. Another step towards Mars
  7. Hi, Hope this is the right place for posting this. I got my GTX970 yesterday and have been playing around with it today. One issue I have though is buildings flickering black briefly and then back to normal. I had it with my old GTX560 as well but didn't bother about it due to the age of the card. Didn't expect it with the 970 though :helpsmilie: I've got the DCS preset on high at the minute and haven't really touched anything else. It all runs great (around 60FPS stable in the air) except for this irritation. I did some googling and all the posts relating to this sort of thing date back to 2012 with some suggesting the issue was fixed many releases ago. Just wondering if there's anything I need to do or can try. Thanks in advance :D
  8. I'm only a noob so my experience and opinions probably don't count for much around here but DCS is the only flight sim I've ever taken any real serious interest in. DCS is the complete package for me. It has reasonable graphics, good models and I can actually get immersed into my flights unlike other sims. I can jump in a bird and get lost for hours flying in DCS. I can't say I feel that excited with other flight sims / games. I really can't put my finger on why but I far prefer DCS to all others I've tried. Every module I've purchased, whether I fly it regular or not feels special. Some of the aircraft I suck at but I'm still proud to own them and happy to support DCS and third party devs whenever I can. Assuming DCS is still around in 20 years, I'll likely still be around myself and still blowing up the engine on my stang LOL
  9. I was just looking at the screen shots posted in that newsletter post. OMG - Drooooooolfest. So looking forward to Edge. It all looks damn good but that F-15 looks well sexy in those shots. :worthy: Gonna be WELL worth the wait.
  10. Ty. That's just what I wanted to hear. Glad it's working well for you and you're enjoying it! I ordered my 970 early this morning to replace my old faithful 560 and paid extra for 24 hour shipping so hopefully it's here tomorrow. WOO! :pilotfly: Next year I'm going in for the kill with a MAJOR upgrade. New mobo, i7 processor, more RAM and at least one SSD and a bigger monitor. The Mrs now has her eye on my current monitor which gives me a bigger excuse to get a new one hehehehe. Won't be long now before I'm living in the home cockpit forums when I start building my own pit. Just need to do some more creeping round the good lady first :D
  11. I've decided to follow conventional wisdom and wait until a consumer release for the Rift. Instead, I've done as advised and have purchased a nice shiney new EVGA GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0 4GB and a new 700W PSU. My PS3 Eye should arrive today or tomorrow so I'll give that a go and see if that improves my tracking. If not I'll be ordering and trying out a genuine TrackIR. I'm also on the look out for a bigger monitor than my current 22" 1920 x 1080 samsung LED display but I think that will be after christmas now.
  12. To be fair, with the visual limitations I have due to my setup, how DCS graphics are with distant targets etc. and other factors I don't really bother with combat at the moment. I can never see any targets at range or get my tracking to work smoothly enough to swing my head around on a swivel like it needs to be so I mostly pleasure fly. I reckon I could cope with the lack of total clarity on things in favour of being able to move around my cockpit and feel immersed. :joystick: Besides, I've got tonnes of half hacked electronics lying round my workshop come sim desk that have been erm, experimented with in the name of arduino so nothing I buy EVER goes to waste hehehe. A hoarder? Me? NEVER LOL :megalol:
  13. Hi, As stated in OP, I am looking to do both. Buy a rift and upgrade my PC / GFX to handle it all. I have a total of £700 to spend upgrading my PC inc the cost of the Rift itself. I just needed some advice on what parts of my current rig I would be best upgrading and what parts to replace them with to best run the Rift. Now after what Alterscape has said, I'm having doubts again. It seems it's a 50 50 thing. Some people like it and say it's a real game changer and others say it's not quite ready yet. I don't know what to do :/ I know it's not an end user product but it's gotta beat my current basic setup? A 22" monitor with a home made head tracker that feels like it's permanently 10 steps behind :/ I really want to try a rift but if it IS like people say which is it's not good enough yet then I'm going to be real dissapointed. I don't mind if it's not 100% pin sharp - it's the 3D immersion I want and the ability to move around my cockpit smoothly without all this jerking, stuttering and lagging I get from all the software and homemade clips I've tried to use for head tracking. I've just purchased a PS3 eye to see if that's going to help improve things but I can't help thinking a Rift is going to kick the ass of anything my current desktop cockpit setup can do. I guess I'm just going to have to suck it and see said the actress to the bishop. But I will upgrade my gfx to a 970 whatever happens. I know my old 560 has had it's day bless it. @Phantom_Mark.. Many thnaks for your offer mate. I'll have a little think about it while I gather some more opinions and make my mind up once and for all. I don't get my loot til tomorrow or the day after so I'll definitely get back to you by then. And thanks again! :D E2A: Just been reading this about the Commercial Rift Release possible for Nov 2015 The way I'm starting to look at it is like this:- I buy a DK2 and get a year or so enjoying it for what it is. When the commercial release comes out, I'll sell on the DK2 and use what I get for it to put towards the commercial product when it is launched. If it sucks and it's like trying to play the game through someone elses prescription lenses then I've only got myself to blame LOL
  14. Rift DK2 - I'm taking the plunge.... WOO! Hi guys, I've been waiting on some money that's been owed to me and now it looks like It's going to be here in the next day or two and I'm really determined I want to get an Oculus Rift DK2 with some of it. But before I go spending out like a kid in a sweety shop, I was hoping someone wouldn't mind going over my current PC specs and offering any improvements to get the most out of my system for the Rift. What parts would you replace and what would you replace them with? CURRENT PC SPECS: Mainboard: Intel DH67BL Chipset: Intel H67 Processor: Intel i5 2500K @ 3.3GHz Socket: 1155 LGA PSU: Generic 500W RAM: 8GB DDR3-1333 @ 667MHz Graphics: Nvidia GT560 OC I've got roughly £700 tops to spend including the cost of the Rift. I was going to just replace my entire PC but wanting the rift means I can't afford a complete new build. I'm not overly concerned with having the best looking graphics at the highest settings but obviously I want the best I can get for my budget with a reasonable frame rate. Thanks in advance for any help! Signed, Mr. very very very excited :pilotfly: :joystick:
  15. Well, I can't tell you whether or not you should carry on. I guess that's down to how much interest people have in the skins and how much enjoyment you get yourself from doing it - which is the most important thing. What I do know is how much work goes into these things from my own trivial dabbling and given you are doing it all to this level and for free, it is VERY much appreciated. Maybe you could ask around and see if people are interested in custom work for some beer vouchers or something? They might be more responsive to having their own unique designs / squadron colours etc. tailored to what they want. I don't know - just an idea.
  16. I'm not entering. I Just wanted to say I'm liking the drawings :D. Thanks to xaoslaad and VEAO for their genorosity! Good luck everyone!
  17. YOU sir, are a MASTER! That Monster A-10 skin is just AMAZING! They're all impressive but that Monster skin just jumps out. Really nice colour scheme. I've had play around with some skins for personal use myself and it's not easy. I'd never be this creative. Hats off to you sir!
  18. I've only tried one program and it worked for me more or less out the box (obviously not including setting up words and bindings) and that's Voice Attack. I found it really easy to set up and assign / bind key pushes etc to words. There is or was a free version / trial that's limited to so many commands and you can't export / backup profiles. The full unlocked version is around $8 so not too bad.
  19. I'm getting more and more determined I'm going to get me a Rift at some point and out of curiosity I had a quick look on ebay to see what was going on there. OMG the prices on there are so stupid right now. I'm seeing the DK2 going anywhere from £400 - £600. They're not that expensive brand new from the people that make them. I can only assume the additional price stems from people cashing in on those wanting it right this second. Crazy man.
  20. I would love to see a Harrier in DCS. I have no preference as to which variant / model.
  21. One thing I personally think would be good for complimenting the rift and that's a pointer gauntlet for the fully clickable cockpit models. That would be soo cool. I mean since rift is VR, why not?
  22. swapped from Freetrack to FTNIR with Trackpoint tonight and WOW.. Such a massive improvement. Freetrack was far too fiddly for me and I was never completely happy with it. Could never get the sensitivities and curves right no matter what I did. I now have complete free movement around my cockpits without no awkward head movements to zoom in low and none of the floaty laggy feeling :D Nice n easy n quick to set up. Thanks for the tip guys!!! Well happy!
  23. Good review. Enjoyed that. Made me think differently again about the rift and now I'm back in two minds again hehe :megalol:
  24. Are you by any chance the same player known as Cow that I managed to wipe out with my top gun maneuvers last night in the VA server? LOL Anyway back on topic, I did some looking into Oculus Rift myself - specifically the DK2 but what put me off were all the reviews saying the clarity just isn't there yet to read the dials / cockpit text etc. I'd love to try out the Rift but I wouldn't buy one until I knew I was going to be 100% happy with it. I'm loving what they are doing and where they are going so I'll be keeping an eye on it. Would happily trade in my monitors when the rift is ready :D At the minute, I use freetrack and a Frankenstein cobble up headset thing I made myself. It's not brilliant but it gets the job done enough to casually fly. I started out just using the pitch and yaw axis but now I'm slowly getting used to the zoom axis and the roll. It takes some getting used to for a start, I know that.. kinda disorientating for a start.
  25. Good choices IMO. You're in for quite a treat when you do get that build up and running. Suggest you take a few weeks off work as you'll likely be immersed for quite a while... hehehehe :pilotfly:  Good luck, hope you get it all sorted.
