  1. Except escort and photographing the attack Corsairs did strafe flak batteries and dive bombed the Tirpitz. The faster Corsairs could attack ahead of the Barracudas before the German smoke screen was fully deployed and obscuring the target. They were also possible involved in some attacks against coastal shipping. All in all the FAA launched some 12 attacks against the Tirpitz or close targets between April and late August 1944, divided into 8 fleet sorties.
  2. From Facebook. Night lightning
  3. Actually yes. Ju88 could just drop torpedoes when released, no bombs. They came later.
  4. M3 was talking about doing some Japanese ground assets by themselves last year. But I hope ED has some things in the pipeline too for the WW2 versions of the Marinas map and their rumored F6F module. https://leatherneck-sim.com/2020/05/20/crouching-update/
  5. Exactly. For example the Solomon Islands (including Bougainville) have a land area of just 38.000 km², that's less than an 200 x 200 km square, sparsely inhabited and mostly covered by jungle. This size is comparable to the current, much more populated, WW2 maps and much less than Syria.
  6. The Germans had flooded parts of Normandy to delay the allied advance. When the Normandy map was still done by RRG 8 years ago it was part of their plan to depict this accurately. That water body might be a leftover from this period. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/508681281/dcs-wwii-europe-1944/posts/619858 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Carentan
  7. Is the right map for the Me-262 really that important compared to having the right opponents? It's main task as a fighter was to attack large, heavily escorted bomber formations high above Europe. We have the B-17 and a late war P-51 for that, the Mk108, R4M and W.Gr 21 rockets, thus we could already built a number of authentic feeling missions for Me-262.
  8. In late WW2 and beyond the US Navy introduced a number of weapons and delivery methods to give their attack aircraft a greater stand off range vs. ships with and their heavy AAA belt. Others used by Corsairs were the 11.75 inch tiny tiny rocket, a rocket powered 500 pound bomb, or the AN/ASG-10 bomb director for toss bombing. At that time the F4U squadrons had the VBF designation (Bombing-Fighting Squadron) and were multi role in nature.
  9. Almost, early December 2019. But anything that has happened before the pandemic still feels like yesterday for me.
  10. It looks like it is close to release since 2 years, since the virtual air show demonstration with carrier landing video.
  11. These pages in the other thread say that the C3 injection is only intended for fighter bombers and altitudes below 1000 m, thus the section is not really relevant for the A series fighter version until ED eventually decides the time for the F8/G8 has come.
  12. They also post updates on their Facebook page from tome to time. All Corsair are usually repeated in the F4U thread in M3L/Leathernecks F4U-1D forum:
  13. But not over the Caucasus. The Soviets used only the earlier Spitfire Vb during the Kuban campaign in 1943. When the first MK IX was delivered to the Soviets in February 1944 the front had already moved westwards. Thus a WW2 Caucasus map would be pointless for our current plane set, that's the whole point.
  14. +1 Fw190 F8 and G8 variants would be the low hanging fruits to give the German side a decent ground attack capability. The Fw190G series would be especially fitting for the maps we have.
  15. Besides the I-16 we have no other aircraft that fought over the Caucasus in WW2. The Fw-190A8 is closest, but the Luftwaffe only used the earlier Fw-190A5 over the Kuban bridgehead, that mostly isn't part of the detailed area in DCS, in 1943. Same for the Spitfire, only earlier variants as lend lease planes.
  16. What about launching sideways from the hangar deck? Apparently most HIVA catapult were already removed from the ships that have had them by the time Essex class ships were operating F4U squadrons and not sure if this was ever done outside of training, but it certainly looks challenging and if the Hellcat is indeed coming to DCS...

    Corsair Hype!

What information about FAA strikes against Norway involving Corsair squadrons I could collect from various books over the years:

    Corsair Hype!

Eric Browns detailed comments about the Corsair in "Wings of the Navy", another book by him, are very enlightening and his dislike for the plane indeed stems from the fact that it required very experienced pilots to operate them safely, not from any perceived performance deficits in comparison with other planes. If someone looks at the long list of often fatal accidents caused by young, hot headed wartime pilots he certainly has a point.
  19. Modern Ortho Images don't work for WW2 maps. Marianas will get a WW2 version "soon" and most likely started live as a WW2 map.
  20. Looks like most of those textures were made with the WW2 version in mind
  21. Translation: If the lifetime of the missiles is set to 3 s instead of 5.5 s in DCS the tactic described in the document is obliviously not possible and the bomber formation has to be attacked from a closer distance, possibly within the effective range of bomber gunners.
  22. The USMC only removed the IR mav capability in the last decade because they don't have the requirement anymore. Harriers trained and deployed with the F before. With the same argument Razbam could stop supporting the module entirely when the AV-8B is phased out by the Marine corps in a few years. When I bought the Harrier they were targeting for a mid 2000s plane and I am more interested in a 90s Harrier.
