  1. J-8A is, supposedly, derived from a scaled up J-7/MiG-21 concept. Looking at the cockpit framing and the like, the MiG-19 would actually be a pretty good fit for it. That'll be interesting to see.
  2. The one that broke out in comments over it. You know the type? Where everyone thinks they're clever by pointing out that DCS is, infact, an acronym. "Oh it's Digital COMBAT Simulator!" Now we have "Oh it's Digital Combat SIMULATOR" Now, ED just needs to develop something for punch-cards so we can question the "Digital" part and we'll have the sweep.
  3. Just what 9L said, bureaucracy is typically nonsensical. Just because something is out of service, doesn't mean it's unrestricted. There needs to be a concerted effort to actually do that, otherwise it just gets filed away and forgotten, the restriction staying in place.
  4. This. It would've been preferable to get a J-8 with domestic avionics, but we play with the hand we're dealt, not the hand we want. If you'd rather them do something that saw frontline service and such, that could mean H-5s or early marks of Q-5. I have no problem with that, I'd rock both of those, but that's basically what it'd mean. At the end of the day, a lot of people forget these are pieces of national defense and the governments responsible are going to be cagey about a lot of things. This is something has to be contended with, especially by a company selling to an international audience.
  5. Damage value of 27? I didn't know the Soviets had health bars.
  6. The Eurofighter we'll be getting, while not a low production run, will be a bit of a Chimera as well. Apparently, the EF Fleet has little commonality.
  7. For a quick and dirty comparison, the Su-15TM's Taifun-M has a detection range of 70km max and the APG-66(V)'s is 150km. The Flagon's radar guided missile, the R-98M1, seems to have a max range of about 20km while the PL-11 is a clone of a Sparrow-clone with a range of about 60km? Kind of hard to find info with some basic googling, it'll probably require some proper publications for a better comparison. That said, this is what you'll be working with if you wanted to fly the J-8 as a stand-in for the Su-15. The concessions I'd, personally, make in crafting a mission of this nature would be honestly to not bring along the PL-11. I wouldn't even make it available. The K-8s are a pretty short range missile, so I'd have the J-8s accessing the PL-8 instead. Similar range to the K-8 series, albeit IR guided. The J-8 also seems to be not as quick as the Su-15, 2.2 vs. 2.5 mach, so another thing to factor in. Again, this is a quick and dirty comparison. If someone here has better information on the performance of the systems involved, I'd be happy to make corrections. I'm honestly happy to get a proper old interceptor.
  8. I'd be surprised. Only two are said to have existed. Weapons trials probably didn't happen.
  9. Nothing brings out the man-baby like irksome things in a video game.
  10. They may not be modeled accurately. We really should be specifying that it's more than just things being classified. ED also has standards it wants to uphold in terms of accuracy and if they can't get sufficient access? It's a no-go.
  11. If they had gone the Chad route, J-8A, they'd have complained about it being outdated.
  12. I'd also have preferred the domestic avionics, but no looking a gift horse in a mouth. Work with what you can get. I'm hyped. Will get.
  13. Once ED manage to catch that particular chimera, of course.
  14. Also, ED said they aren't doing any more FC3 modules.
  15. I'd have to completely agree. I'd love to see some armor sims in DCS, give more depth to the physics, and it'd really make providing CAS for actual players even more compelling than it already is.
  16. DLSS can seem like literal witchcraft, too. It's well worth it. I don't use it much at all on my 3080, but it will seem like absolute black magic when it is used.
  17. No, because if you want the Phantom, you're getting the Phantom. If you want the Strike Eagle, you get the Strike Eagle. I'm more interested in the older systems and older airframes (Usually). I imagine anyone interested in the Phantom is probably the same. It's like asking muscle car lover if he'd rather buy a classic Mustang or a Civic Type-R. He may not even hate the Civic, he may even be a fan of Japanese cars, as well, but his immediate affections are with the older machine. I'm not preordering the Strike Eagle because I want to see how it turns out before I consider it. The Phantom is a pre-order for me.
  18. We really need better ground handling and physics before anything happens.
  19. Not canceled, but it's on ice for obvious reasons. At least, for ED. They did mention a third party could have better luck.

Yeah, the space bugs me. It just needs something there.
  21. The absolute agony of bureaucracy.
  22. We're not getting an FF MiG-29 any time soon, either. Believe me, I know that feeling too. It sucks.
  23. There was a decent plan for one a while back, but they couldn't get the necessary info. Had some good scans of one, though.
  24. That was infuriating to come across, lol.
