Steam and pre-steam Modules purchase
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Narcal's topic in Payment and Activation
well this is a tricky one. Let me tell you what happened to me... I originally bought A10c on DCS website years ago. Then steam offered DCS world and I got it and many modules through steam and added my A10c module to steam. BUT forgot my password for my DCS A10c account so made a new account for all steam purchases. So I have two accounts. one steam one DCS website. Yesterday I bought the Mig21bis through DCS website through my DCS account and unzipped the file into the steam folder DCS world. I loaded it up, the mig was there, I started a mission and the activation window came up. I entered my key and it worked ! Been flying ALLL day . my brain hurts. Hope this helps. -
What would be the best opponent for the MiG-21bis?
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Zakatak's topic in Heatblur Simulations
Did the Mig21bis variant we are getting in DCS ever see combat? What was his historical opponent of Mig21bis? I would love to fight the F4 but it is a two seater so I can't see that working well in multiplayer and the AI is never a very satisfying opponent. . And our Mig is the wrong variant from the 80's not the 60's. The Mirage IIIc is a single seater which would be better but once again our Mig21 is the wrong variant... -
I have DCS through steam with most modules. Mig21bis will be available through DCS in 8 days but steam in 3 weeks. Can I just buy the module through DCS and install it in the steam folder ? When FW190 was released on steam I bought it through steam but it didn't unlock so I just downloaded the installer from DCS website and installed into the DCS world folder in steam folder...it worked. But I doubt it will work if I try buy Mig21 through DCS. Am I going to have to uninstall the whole thing from steam and download all the modules again separately? I obviously would really rather not have to download the 20gig again. I suppose I could have a separate DCS world just for MIg21 but I have P51 an FW190 so if I add bf109K4 and SpitIX in a different install I wonder if that would create problems. I don't really want two installs of DCS with some module on steam and some separate. Incase it's not clear in my country I have to pay by the gig I download so deleting and installing 20gig again is no small thing. I pay something like $30 month for about 35gig so this will spend a big chunk of my months data and DCS modules are quite expensive anyway...:noexpression:

DCS through steam and non-steam version

There is a MUCH easier way. Just lean your head to the right and press f12 to centre your track IR. Then your view will be in the middle of the cockpit when you centre your head. You can fix it with a single f12 click. I do this for all bf109 in all sims. In fact you can finetune the centred position in all cockpit in all axis with a single f12 click. If you think you are too far forward then just lean forward and click f12... your default position will be moved back a little when your head is in natural position.

Nice cobra ! I love the way it skids at high angles.

I was very interested to see the old beam rider missiles. I would hate to have them removed so I can't play with them single player. Can the online missions can have loadouts restricted. The old beam rider would give you a disadvantage in online play. This would be the only air to air beam rider in the sim right?

Yeah it just the desert sunset reflecting off the plane. But wow what a close call. The gunner had him lined up as he held it still to release the bomb. Amazing footage.

I come here everyday even though I know there is nothing to see... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHVy8XJEqLI

Well as I understand it the MW50 gives a cooling effect and a increased horsepower effect below full throttle height. Above full throttle height MW50 gives only cooling effect. I don't know if the engine was supposed to be run at 3000 or 3250rpm but I imagine if it was me in the cockpit I would probably run at 3000rpm unless I had a good reason to push the engine harder... Like a mustang on my tail. Better to break the engine than get shot down knowing I could have pushed it harder. I have read that the fw190D had a best turn speed of 400km/h which is a lot higher than most ww2 planes at about 300km/h. Of course I could be wrong about everything...

I've never thought of using the sun as a countermeasure ! It's one hell of a flare. I wonder if this effects the modern missiles in real life and in the DCS world?

I also use the same curve for all the planes. I think a lot of work goes into getting the control surface to deflect right amount per degree of stick movement. So each planes has a different feel to it. I think that as long as I use the same curve for all the planes then I am still getting the feeling differences of each plane compared to all the others. I use 20%

I was just looking at Mig Mad Marine writing thinking this was a photo then noticed the lights were on the wing tips and thought "strange for him to have his lights on over Korea" and then I realize it a screen shot not a photo... heheh great work

I'm sure you guys have heard of the Sabre pilots running out of fuel on the return flight from Mig alley. I thought I might give that a try and made a long mission up the coast to fight migs in which I have to break off the fight to run home before I run out of fuel. I had to climb to altitude for the glid home to Batumi. Interestingly the utility hydraulic system seems to only have enough pressure to drop the landing gear and open the air breaks once. If I try to close the air breaks they stop about two thirds closed as the pressure in the utility system drops right off. The main and alternate hydraulics however continue to work and if I move the ailerons or elevators and watch the pressure go down it recovers once I stop using them. I am wondering if the main and alternate pressure is supposed to recover with the engine off. I checked the RPM it was only 20% well below the 45% needed to generate power. Also before I put the gear down I was checking that the engine can be used like an impeller to generate power. It can, but only at high speed. Once I have gear and breaks down there is no power except from the battery. I was expecting to have to land without hydraulic power to control surfaces but maybe my expectation was wrong? Also which system powers the flaps? Flaps dont seem to effect any of the hydraulic systems, unless I missed it. Still alota fun to try it. You obviously only get one attempt at landing and no go around. I nearly ran out of runway and ending up skidding 180 degrees spin to a halt right at the very edge of the runway. whew !

I can't take it any more... I've watched all the you tube previews and tutorials. I watched documentary and rare footage. I read the translated manual and the wiki and forums threads. I am beginning to suspect something is rotten in Denmark... I can't wait a month more for mig21

Also the air breaks are actuated with utility hydraulic system not the main system. You can switch the indicator gauge between main, alternate and utility hydraulics to check the pressure. The pressure will dip lower and then return to full pressure when you move the control surfaces for the main and alternate. The air breaks will dip the pressure in the utility . The details are great. When you land you can even turn off the engine and then bleed the hydraulic pressure off the three systems as was done in real life...

Wow I stumbled on the store page and for a second I thought I could buy it and download it right now! Nearly sprayed a mouthful of hot tea all over my screen and keyboard... When can we fly it !?!?!? soon?

so they built them with no aileron and rudder trim
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to leafer's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
Can anyone with a force feedback stick confirm that she flys balanced at cruise. The manual says should be balanced at 480km/h at SLmax continuous power so what is max continuous power anyway? 2400rpm? It seems funny to me that some guys think they are being realistic cruising around holding constant aileron when there are a trim tab on the ailerons. What do they think those trim tabs were for? If not for balancing the engine torque at cruise. I know the bf109 had vert stabilizer that was an air foil and the lift it produced turned against the engine torque. Did the FW190s' have the same type of vert stab? -
Took me 5 or 6 goes to take off and I admit on the last failed attempt I may hay taken the lords name in vane... But as soon as I realised it has a lockable tail wheel! I was fine. I can take off no worries now and I'm only using a logitech 3d pro $40 twisty flight stick. no pedals... I love this footage of this Luftwaffe pilot nearly loosing it while taking off in front of the news cameras!

Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to leafer's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
I'd be happy if ED just fine tuned it a little so it is balanced at cruise. 480km/h at max continuous power at sealevel. At the moment it is not balanced and In real life the guy who delivered it to the front would have told the mechanics that it was a little off and to give it a little right aileron trim. I mean as if the German pilots would just keep flying around in an unbalanced plane when they could just have it adjusted in 5 mins when they landed after discovering the problem. That's what the trim tabs are for. -

Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to leafer's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
As a workaround for now I calibrated my flight stick a little off centre. I held it to the left and zeroed it, so it would push to the right a little hands free. Has exactly the same effect as the aileron trim tabs. This works great and the plane is now balanced hands free at cruise of 470km/h at 2300rpm in level flight at 5000m. But it also feels better balanced through wide speed range either aside of cruise speed... -

Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to leafer's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
The more I test this, The more I think it is not quite right. At any given stabilizer setting I can throttle back till I find the "balance point" where the forces harmonize and the ship flys straight, hands free. But it is always at a power setting that cannot sustain level flight. The closest I can get it flying at 350km/h at 500m at 1800rpm wit h1m/s sink rate. Has anyone figured this out? If we could only adjust the trim tabs we could fix this so easily but seeing that we can't touch them it is a terrible shame to fly around holding the stick unnecessarily. Quite frustrating really. -

Yep seems to balance out at a level cruise of about 470km/h and 2400rpm. Which makes sense in the real world but in the sim we don't cruise in level flight for long. I fly a mission where I take off and do a fast climb at about 350km/h to 7000m. If there was a ground adjustable trim tab slider in the plane set up options I would move it to a lower speed and trim for fast climb over level cruise. CLOD bf109s' are trimmed for the fast climb at full power. So we can take off, trim horizontal stab for 300km/h climb and she balances out hands free. It's much more enjoyable to fly like that. -
Fw 190 D-9 - Take Off Easy/Okay/Hard?
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Flagrum's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
Took me about 5 or 6 goes to get it. I kept trying to lift the tail off early, and roll on the main wheels before lift off but every time lost control of the rudder... Once I started to hold the stick back to lock the tail wheel till just before lift off, it was fine. Also I don't use full power. More like 2700 rpm. 3000rpm at the most
