Flight dynamics description on product page
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Bucic's topic in DCS: Bf 109 K-4 Kurfürst
I have seen wing flexing accompanied with aileron control reversal flying the Su27 at very high speed in a dive. I was surprised and pleased in equal measure. -
thanks! I noticed when the Mig was flying in formation and varying his throttle to hold position the engine sounded very much like the Mig21 in DCS since the patch. So much so I wondered if LN got the sound from this footage.

The fact the OP didn't mention what speed he was climbing at may suggest this is the problem. Get nice and fast and then climb. In a supersonic dive to the deck you can zoom climb back up over 10km !

Will Bf109k4 receive "cutting" so non FFB stick will need greater stick deflection at higher speeds to simulate the higher stick force required to hold elevator position stationary? Thats as simple as I can put it. I won't buy it if I can't fly it with feeling of speed. Some say the other WW2 birds have cutting and so K4 will get it but I put more weight in Yoyo statements that they don't. This whole issue is very confusing and I suspect there are two conversations here. One for FFB owners and one for non FFB owners. It sounds like FFB sticks will give feeling of increased stick force at high speed and non FFB sticks would need to have cutting added to give sense of dynamic stick forces. If they add cutting it would mess up the FFB stick accuracy. If they leave it out it will mean no feeling for non FFB.

I just read the thread about the Bf109 K4 control forces vs speed, and I'm terribly sorry but I still am not quite sure I understand... It's on sale right now and I would like to buy it but I need to understand this as it is important. It seemed to me that YoYo stated quite clearly that stick position matches control surface position. Period. So one can fly DCS and then fly the real thing with the same feel for stick position vs control surface position. Fair enough. So for a FFb stick, force may still go up as speed increases but for a non FFB stick there will be no effect from air speed on stick position. I have no FFB stick so unfortunately this would effectively mean no sensation of dynamic stick force as speed increases. I suspect that trying to fly the DCS K4 modeled with correct elevator position / stick deflection , with a cheap non FFB stick would just be a waste. It seemed to me there was some misunderstanding that stick forces for non FFB will be added in the form of "cutting" . But as I read it Yoyo's posts stated no cutting or anything else will be added as that would degrade the accuracy of the stick deflection / elevator deflection. I hope that is clear and to the point. I won't buy it right now without a FFB stick because I cannot feel any effect from high speed on my stick. So do I understand correctly? I did order a MSFFB2 off ebay a couple of years ago but it never turned up and I lost my 180 bucks.. Maybe I should try to get another one. I love the messer and I can see that non FFB is not gonna cut it with this level of simulation.

If I have the cloud filter on and the ground filter on, or even both on, does that make the probability of detecting and enemy plane go down? If the planes is notching or flying low or just at the maximum range I can imagine it would. I sometimes hesitate to turn on the filters because I wonder if I will find it harder to detect targets.

Has anyone ever got the canopy to fog up?
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Dirty Rotten Flieger's topic in MiG-21Bis
I see -
I haven't seen this happen. Is the feature enabled yet? What conditions would bring this about? I heard that Mig15 is Korea would fog up when diving from high alt as they reached lower more humid air? Is that right? I would like to see this.

DCS: MiG-21bis Preliminary Changelog 1.2.14+
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Cobra847's topic in MiG-21Bis
So our mechanics can look forward to us pulling up after a hot sorte with smoke and steaming ethanol rising off the burnt airframe, accompanied by the searing moan of a turbine stretched by overspeed? sweet -
Wingman clock bearing callouts?
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Dirty Rotten Flieger's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
The simplest thing would be for the AI to call o'clock relative to the player but of course it is unrealistic . I just can't tell if that is happening in the game at present. It would be better IMO if the O'clock calls were for the group in formation and once the formation breaks up the AI starts calling simple compass bearings eg tally bandit SE, for 7, high. OMG GGTharos you have over 26 thousand posts! My monocle just fell and rolled under the table -
HHmmm... try checking the nationality of the AWACS. I think US will use imperial even if it is a russian plane. I am flying Russian Mig with russian AWACS and all coms are in metric.
-
I would like to know more about this. I had wondered about radar gun ranging and assumed it was possible. I didn't know about the 500m limit to the RP-22 radar though. It does seem strange that this function would not be available. IIRC the earlier Mig21 had no internal gun. Some what like the F4 phantom they assumed guns were obsolete and then realising no gun fighter was a bad idea strapped at gunpod under the mig. Maybe the RP-22 was designed for the gunless Mig21 and thats why it was not designed for ranging below the minimum range of expected mountable missiles...
-
I'm sure you can change the setting in option between metric and imperial. My AWACS is in metres, so I'm guessing your option in set to imperial

Once in the grass - always in the grass?
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Kobymaru's topic in MiG-21Bis
Maybe it would be good if we could ask the ground crew to get the tracker... again! And then wait some time penalty. I play with respawns on so I have to hit respawn and swear a bit and do the startup sequence again. -
"over the hump" for Mig21bis
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Dirty Rotten Flieger's topic in MiG-21Bis
Ok glad you got it working. Let me know if any problems. I'll try to fix. I put the description in as you suggested and I tweaked the AWACS so it has better coverage in all the missions and changed the default loadout to 800l drop tank 2x S3r and 2x S3s. I left the wingmen with max external fuel and 4x R60. uploaded the file V3 -
When I am flying with my flight and one of the AI says bandit 2 oclock. I know this is 2 o'clock bearing for the whole formation but once we all break and are maneuvering and one of my AI wingmen says bandit 2 o'clock, I don't know if he means 2 o'clock relative to him or me. So does anyone know who is the reference point when the AI are calling contacts? Thanks

Historical combat tactics for Mig-21
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Alexander Seil's topic in MiG-21Bis
Yeah as you say f15 would love Mig21 to try this attack. I would be shoot down before I ever knew about a launch. I'm doing this against F5 with aim9 and F4 with aim7 and aim9.... The aim7 can still get me but the window for them to get me is quite short because the F4 can't follow me back up to altitude if he is circling on the deck when I attack. -
Engine sound from the cockpit, more powerfull and awesome...
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Skulleader's topic in MiG-21Bis
Oh man I love the engine sounds from the last patch. I just finally got it updated. -
My landings have gotten much better now that I started coming in much steeper and faster than I would in any other plane. This way I have much better visibility. Don't worry about coming in fast. You've got good breaks and a chute. I have never run out of runway. It sounds crazy but my advice is come in faster and steeper! lol

Historical combat tactics for Mig-21
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Alexander Seil's topic in MiG-21Bis
At first I was doing the hard turning, high AOA, slow speed fighting with heat seekers and guns. Mainly because I was totally surprised that the MIg21 could fly well in this way. Lately I have been doing something totally different. I approach the area of interest high and fast and start a shallow dive with zero AOA and full burners. Like a giant supersonic zoom and boom attack. I use radar missiles and whether I get a shot off or not, I blow straight through and climb out with all that speed and E. You can start the dive at 12000m and at the bottom of the dive your doing about 1.6 or at most 1.8 M and then climb all the way back up to 12000m after the attack . I don't know if this is historically accurate but it sure is fun!! -
better to climb then cruise or cruise low?
Dirty Rotten Flieger replied to Dirty Rotten Flieger's topic in MiG-21Bis
Thanks Jorge III this is exactly the stuff I am learning to thinking about. I been playing the over the hump missions and they are all about 200km or just under i guess. I have to climb at least enough to get over the mountains and very often find myself having to disengage from a fight so I have enough fuel to make it home... Sometimes I even have jettisoned all my unused missiles to lower drag so I can pull away from the F4 chasing me with full racks of missiles slowing his acceleration. If I can just get over the mountains and glide down to Nanchick with a little bit of fuel left for a powered landing. quite tense! These fuel calculations are not a simple thing in combat. 450L/100km at 2100km/h at 12000m wow ! the distance traveled makes it actually economical in a way. certainly worth it when time is short. Really enjoying learning to think about such high energy flying and constant fuel awareness. -
I found turning off the mirrors had a good effect and also turning up the preload slider to about 10K
-
It appears to be better to spend the fuel to climb to high altitude and then cruise in the thin air rather than save the climbing fuel and cruise at low altitude. If I was in a long range plane I would say this is true for sure but the MIg21 is quite short range so I'm not really sure if I am doing it right. Any thoughts on this with the Mig21? Should I use the burner to climb to 10000m and then cruise or no burner in the climb? I'll have to test it myself but I'm sure there are better informed people here to help. I have been shot down in a mission and I respawned and took off again and flew fast and high to get back in the fight. So when I get over the fight. I am 10000m and very fast and I know there are phantoms down there on the deck maneuvering with my wing men. I did some supersonic zoom and boom attacks with the burner on. I'f I'm lucky I get a radar lock and a missile off and if I can't spot anything I climb back right back up. Well after a few of these runs I noticed my fuel seems to be going down much slower than if I had stayed low and tried to maneuver with the enemy with burners on. Is this what the north vietnamese Mig21 pilots did? I had heard they would engage the phantoms with Mig17s and then Mig21s would do a high speed attack, fire some missiles and blow through. I had assumed they were at low altitude the whole time but now I stumble on this supersonic zoom and boom thing I wonder if thats how they did it? It's pretty fun to do after being used to doing zoom and boom in a bf109 !! Maybe one day I can get a supersonic gun run at the bottom of a 10000m dive! :D I doubt it though

Hello fellow Mig21 flyers, I adapted the Mig29 campaign "over the hump" for the Mig21bis Enemies are mostly F5E, F4E, and some F16C in the final missions. Enemies use Aim9p, Aim7m...no Aim120 Awac support and recce flights in all missions for "boggy dope" and increased your flight size from 2 to 4 Mig21bis. Works great. As if it was made for Mig21bis. The missions are perfect length for Mig21 with drop tanks. Just take off and fly 90% till your flight catches up . This way they will not spend all their fuel on afterburner catching up to you. I have played it 3 or 4 times through . Just love it. All the missions can be completed without dying but I often get killed and respawn, take off again then climb up high and fast to get over the mountain range to get back into the fight quickly. Mach 2 over 10000m. I made a thread in the campaigns forum but Mig21 flyers will see it in this forum... https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/895430/

The mission have less than twenty planes and only a couple of SAMs ... https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/895430/
