dear blue flag, 1.5 when thank you
-
when a missile says it is "radar guided" it means that someone is tracking you with their radar and then the missile tracks that, not that it homes directly on your radar. there are missiles like that, however i do not believe anyone has ever made one for air-to-air combat. they are used in an anti-SAM role fairly often by everyone, though.

oh right i thought you were being sarcastic i need to learn to read words
-
thank you for coming into every thread and linking this stuff (no sarcasm) i keep resolving to install it, forget and then can't remember what it's name was. neat.
-
>that >political if that's political the video and the whole thread is i'm talking about weapons used in war and the military situation in a country. it has nothing to do with politics.
-
i'd have to know what city it is exactly but you have to remember that many of these "cities" have essentially zero civilians remaining due to how long the war has gone on. anyway, a blanket ban on cluster munitions seems dumb because what's the difference really between a clusterbomb and a few big HE ones? what means something is not the weapon you are using, but who you are pointing it at. the whole reason cluster was banned was not because it's a horrifically brutal weapon (it's basically just HE bomblets) where it pales in comparison to nuclear biological chemical, but because a percentage of the bomblets would fail to detonate and create minefields that would kill children and other noncombatants later when they accidentally picked one out of the ground at the site of an old battlefield. this is a technological problem that can be overcome, so designating cluster as some sort of proscribed entirely amoral seems silly. tl;dr i don't really see any proof that civilians were killed in this attack. i just see buildings being hit by a russian bomb which happens hundreds of times a day in the theater. maybe if it was recorded 3 years earlier would i worry about civilians being killed in bombing attacks against syrian cities, but as it stands most of the ones being bombed have long been under the control of military force(s) operating in the region.

ED needs to overhaul the ground units in general we're missing piles of interesting tactical niches entirely and what we have for everyone that isn't US/russia is either basic or nonexistent i wish they'd take a month and just make ground units to fill in the tactical environment really

i've made several missions on caucasus in the winter and it seems far easier to see vehicles than it does in summer or spring i am not sure why exactly, but it's probably because the ground is white and the tanks are much darker.

hey BD, i've had problems for the first time, maybe i just have no actual reading comprehension but during -
i don't really want a f-16 in DCS, for one it's unnecessary and two it's just rude. there are plenty of other planes that haven't been done by other sims (cough) that are ready to get their time in the limelight, some of them for the first time. i'd rather have those in the game, even if i wasn't personally interested in them, just for variety's sake. besides, the game doesn't need more AMRAAM carrying american fighters. with the addition of the hornet it'll have enough. so if you're going to do the f-16 ED, please at least do the F-16A and then really fill in the theater and campaign and stuff.

Operation Bactria (MP COOP 14), Afghanistan CAS
Cik replied to Habu23's topic in User Created Missions General
played and completed it several times with no issues. -
the first unit of the group always moves the group, so you can simply move that one if you want to move the whole group, though of course that introduces other issues. the real horror of the whole process is when you have to start checking if things are inside buildings considering the map isn't accurate to the meter in terms of building placement vs. the 3d world i would literally give 50$ for the ability to open a window to the 3d world without placing a test plane in the map above it then saving then loading the game then looking at the thing for 2 seconds then quitting then going back to ME then moving it 2 feet then rechecking repeat for every group you are placing in a city a thousand times
-
you don't need to, just flick the selector in between launches. like i said, there's no real compelling reason to do so, but you can easily fire a mixed bag of missiles if you really want to.
-
well, AWACS support improves the su immensely. people grouse about the buggy 'ghost' contacts but honestly just look at the screen for 10 seconds, the ones that move aren't ghost contacts. i don't see exactly how it's a showstopper exactly. p2p datalink when though thanks

The Enemy Within DLC
Cik replied to baltic_dragon's topic in A-10C The Enemy Within Campaign (legacy version)
the georgian helicopters (uzi, i believe) are quite bloodthirsty and will chase after and kill the trucks, even if you do not. setting up the trigger to recognize that you alone killed them would be nigh impossible i believe (though my knowledge of complicated scripting is lackluster) but to just check if it is dead is much easier. if you do extremely indepth victory checks it would take longer to design than the mission itself (probably by far, actually) it's a compromise but as far as they go it's a reasonable one. -
one of the chief obstacles to designing missions around COIN is the somewhat limited arsenal of the insurgents. while they have the basics consisting mainly of: AK armed infantry russian armor (due to caucasus region) RPG infantry MANPAD basic ironsighted AA guns, shilka etc they are still missing some rather crucial inbetween technology they currently don't get access to. some of this i believe can be attributed to the age of the insurgent units; we're seeing some new stuff being fielded in recent times, which would really liven up the tactical environment in DCS when fighting insurgent forces. new stuff includes but is not limited to: ATGM teams (incl. older TOW launchers, russian malyutka, konkurs launchers) technicals (incl. various machine guns, improvised rocket artillery, mortars) heavy machine gun teams improvised armored vehicles older MANPADs like the SA-7 strela and earlier stinger blocks and the LAAD redeye mortar teams these things bridge the gap between the current 'low end' troops (basically just AK-armed infantry) and the high-end (mostly russian light/medium armor) the addition of these new units would help the "weaker" platforms, who do not have access to longer-range or precision guided armor-penetrating weapons, and add some diversity to the mid-tier insurgent equipment. thanks for reading.

there's no reason to ripple missiles in the MIG, afaik the philosophy you were talking about was more for frontal approaches with more capable missiles than the 21 has, like the AA-7 apex and AA-10 alamo. with the mig, either you are approaching in the frontal quarter, and thus there is no real point in firing heatseekers, or you are approaching in rear quarter and there is no reason to give away the fact that you are firing with a radar. there is a small exception, that of firing against a defending target, in which case firing radar/heat might be useful, especially as the R-3R is actually a pretty decent missile. the vietnam strategy was just to approach fast and low and then do a bellyshoot and then exit the fight, and in the MIG it's a fairly wise strategy; you are too vulnerable in an extended dogfight, as the MIG isn't that maneuverable and loses energy fast after the second turn or so. play guardians of the caucasus and you'll see what i'm talking about; the best strategy is to run high and fast in from the side, spray missiles into the NATO formation and then exit the fight at mach 2. sticking around to knife fight it out with them is simply too risky unless you have a huge numbers advantage.

platitudes again. "just outnumber them bro" yeah that doesn't help, because even if you fire ERs at them they will never connect "drag eagles" surrendering the field is losing FYI, trying to spin running away and having a SAM futilely shoot at them at max range is a little weird anyway they can just choose not to pursue, and by the way, they don't in most cases because they're not idiots. "just fire behind max range and then run" yeah okay i can i guess but how is that a victory isn't it a waste of time? none of these strategies even accomplish anything. why are you giving advice to me that is pointless i don't know. it's incredible to me how people can say these things with a straight face.
-
not the case. i just never play the BVR game because it's a game thats almost automatically lost when you play it in the plane we are talking about. this is true but not exactly important. for many reasons that it would take many paragraphs to go into, the eagle already operates far better without one than the sukhoi does, because the eagle doesn't have to split itself into smaller, separated groups to win. the eagle is perfectly content flying in larger, closer formations where visual is mostly easy to keep, because it is fully capable of just bulldogging it's way into BVR and wasting everybody that comes nose to nose with it. the sukhoi simply cannot do it, which is why we are having this conversation of "how do we split ourselves up to beat this thing?" and the secondary conversation "how am i supposed to keep track of my wing when we are 5-7 miles apart and being fired at?" hence the datalink conversation. for the eagle, this whole problem does not exist for the above reason. edit: i should say that when the hornet comes out it'll probably come out with an AMRAAM with a realistic range, in which case it'll essentially ruin the sukhoi permanently and it will be even more pointless to fly it in a MP environment. personally i'm not looking forward to it, as the balance is already pretty skewed. i can't imagine what will happen when the eagle gets it's 20nm RTR spear of heaven, let alone what the hornet will do. if it's added to missions on popular servers it'll probably be the only thing worth flying. personally i'm looking forward to the hornet, but not what the hornet is going to do to multiplayer balance. it'll probably be absolutely horrific for everyone. no, i do not, but i think it probably works above 0% (which is it's current working condition :^)) LOS would not be too difficult to keep between a high and a low sukhoi, or two high sukhois. the only time it wouldn't work is low in the mountains, in which case you would be flying in close formation and in visual anyway (mostly) even if the enemy had the ability to jam it like they probably do in real life, it's still functional more than 0% of the time anyway. okay so we agree i've already apologized and i meant it. it's just frustrating sometimes when you get in these discussions and people tell you things you've all heard before. most of these suggestions (especially ambush, envelopment, wide etc) simply don't work until you know where your friendlies are without having to say a paragraph of BRA information but we already agreed. my KDR, not that it matters particularly is above 1:1 because i simply don't engage in BVR as it is a fool's game that will get you no kills 100% of the time and killed a small percentage of the time. against eagles it's a pointless exercise and an entirely ineffective means of both surviving and getting kills. it's not something i particularly like because personally i think it makes no sense and is a frustrating exercise the majority of the time. i'd much rather be in the clouds using my radar missiles, but like i said earlier, it's better to never take off in that instance because at least you are not at risk. essentially hombre, our philosophy is the same, i just don't fly the eagle. if you were on my side of the aisle, you would probably agree with most of what i am saying. i don't lack experience.
-
as i said, i already do this i don't really care what eagle drivers have to do in this case. not having datalink effects sukhois far more because they actually have to use wide tactics. all the eagle has to do is maneuver to RTR and fire. in the pre-modern era datalink was not required or necessary, because aircraft flew large, relatively close formations and did not have to deal with multilaunch capability, which is the whole point of the wide formation in the first place. this whole conversation started because someone (GG, i believe) said in his usual extremely unhelpful deflection "just go wide stupid!" so i've gone over the whole reason why that doesn't work FYI, it doesn't ****ing work. i have no idea why you're offended about it, considering you aren't even involved nor have you prevented any evidence that i'm actually incorrect. sure, i snapped at the other guy but come on, that advice WAS totally unhelpful. i've tried all of it before, too. btw i have far above 1:1 KD in the sukhoi on 104th so don't take that angle.
-
see why didn't you just give useful advice in the first place sheesh :P
-
that's pinging on my sarcasm detector, so i'll ask if you have some mystical advice about keeping track of friends that aren't in visual range without a datalink and an extremely basic navigation mode? AFAIK it doesn't even represent bullseye at all, though it's been months since i've flown the thing after i pretty much stopped playing su27 in disgust in the current state of it's missiles online.
-
all basically platitudes and you're assuming a great deal about what i do in general, aren't you? most of your advice is so general as to be worthless "set a trap" how exactly? "find a weakness"? what weakness? the only weakness i can find is that you can approach low and smoke them with ETs, which isn't exactly a BVR strategy. "RTB with missiles on the rails" i do this already genius, unfortunately that's not exactly a win condition. i would have achieved the same effect if i had simply never taken off.' "set up your wingman to be unexpected by the eagle" yeah okay that's what i'm already doing btw navigating as a group when your only real reference is the F-10 map, an extremely clumsy and coarse indicator of position (which by the way changes every 10 seconds because i'm in a supersonic aircraft) and can't be referenced while fighting anything is effectively worthless. FYI, bombers had an hour and had to fly in a straight line the majority of the time, comparing the situation to a supersonic jet fighter shooting and defending all over the place is quite a laugh.
