Yes, I looked at the release announcements page posted by Big Newy - maybe it's just me being an old duffer, but I just couldn't find a stable release for this year, only open betas. Funnily enough, after I read the replies here I started DCS and the first thing was a 38GB update! So that sorts that one. The Apache is shown as open beta only - but many of the campaigns are also listed as requiring it - the whole first page and first two of the second page (12 campaigns in all) on the eshop.
-
That's good to know - I hadn't realised and hadn't been around for some time, so not surprising. Now I can try the Apache Thanks guys edit: does make me wonder why a number of modules in the shop state that the open beta is required to play them, though

Hi all, can someone please advise how well VR is working in the current open beta release? Performance for me is good in the stable. Thanx

Question Regarding Switch Accessibility
Johnny Dioxin replied to Johnny Dioxin's topic in DCS: AH-64D
Okay thanks guys. -
Are there any or many switches etc located behind or to the rear side of the pilot or CPG? I only fly in VR and have had to give up flying modules where I have to turn too much to see or operate controls due to my Ankylosing Spondylitis. It just isn't possible for me to do so. A couple of controls is not really a problem as I can assign them to HOTAS with modifiers specifically for out of reach things. Whole panels of controls/switches etc are just not viable. Even the stuff at the rear of side consoles can't be reached without physically getting up and turning my body, so I hope there aren't any in the Apache so I can buy it and keep myself busy with it. Cheers.

I just did this yesterday (recentering in the way you have described) and then further refined it today while in VR in the A-10C, so it it's definitely working. One thing to make sure of is that you need to keep your head in the right position when you press the save key. That was quite awkward for me - but I realised I had to do it after my first save was skewed on pressing recentre - pretty much like you describe. edit: another thing I had to do yesterday was, after saving the adjusted view press Num5 which put my view in the standard centre position for 2D, then used my VR recentre key and this showed the saved position I wanted. Didn't have to do that after refining it today, though.

Blade damage model is way too forgiving.
Johnny Dioxin replied to DmitriKozlowsky's topic in Bugs and Problems
When I flew the ADF practise mission once, I picked up the squaddie and as I was lifting off my blade tips clipped the nearby powerlines which were out of sight at the time. The helicopter plummeted instantly to Earth, no ability to control anything. Is that what you wanted? -
Ok thanks - I did really like using the 'gaze' method to switch things etc and I'm glad it's still available - being able to hide the cursor is something i think everyone wanted, so great that it's now implemented. I'll be trying the Leap Motion control, too, so I hope there's nothing too radical with it. The way it works in MSFS is too unreliable for me, so hopefully it will be better in DCSW - looks more like the old FlyInside method from the couple of screenshots I've seen, which is no bad thing. Thanks - hopefully ED will update the provided documents at some stage.

Hmm, I looked up and down the list but didn't see it - I'll check again, thanks. I mean where you would simply look at the control you wanted to operate (using the onscreen dot), then use the UI controls - left and right mouse click or mouse-wheel - to operate the control/button/switch. Although the menu and recentre functions are working as before, the mouse controls aren't. I will have a look at the UI section, then, maybe something has happened to the assignments.

I just updated to 2.7 (I had to give up on flight simming for some time) and am finding it difficult to understand what is going on with VR and the various control settings (seems the gaze control I liked so much is gone). I also couldn't find the previous UI profile in the control assignments panel, though the previously assigned controls for recentre and to bring up the menu are still working. Checking the manuals in the sim, I see that they are a few years old and don't explain the new stuff. Is there a document somewhere that does?

Here: https://sites.google.com/view/dcsworldguides/dcs-world-guidesite Must have removed it from my sig. I don't visit the forums very much since they don't have the latest topics listed on the DCS website any more, so if anyone has any questions in future, I recommend sending me a pm, so I should be notified. Cheers.

I don't fly any more, for various reasons, and took my site down a while back as the info was getting a bit old and without flying etc I wouldn't be aware of updates and changes. I also thought that FC4/MAC or whatever it will be called would be out by now and the FC3 info would be of little use, but that hasn't happened. The website has been sat on my Google Drive since, though, and I decided I might as well republish it - but bear in mind that some of the newer modules may well have had things added and procedures changed in the last year or so. I'll leave it up as long as I keep a Google Drive sub. https://sites.google.com/view/dcsworldguides/dcs-world-guidesite

Unfortunately this kind of thing just doesn't happen any more. A long time back, when Black Shark was the only DCS product (excepting Flaming Cliffs of course) there was a "Rookie" group and an open server and it was a lot of fun. I've not seen anything similar since - and that was over 10 years ago. You could always set something up yourself, or ask who is interested, to gauge how popular such a thing would be.

Great - pleased to hear it. Unfortunately, the likelihood of the "Advanced" version being completed are getting remote. I've done the start-up mission, maybe another one or two, but I can't continue with them right now as I have almost lost my voice and it's a long term thing ( a side-effect of medical treatment ) so it may not be released after all - but never say "never". Who knows, maybe in a few months things will be better. I've been unable to fly for some time now, as well, so it's not looking good all round. I'll post again if I can get it finished.

Integrate voice commands to AI as standard
Johnny Dioxin replied to WelshZeCorgi's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I've been saying this for years - I think it's really appalling that no flight sims offer any kind of voice interaction despite it having been a reliable part of Windows for over 10 years, though all of them have 3rd party add-on voice commands and/or interaction. I'm guessing an excuse would be that non-English or non-native speakers may not be understood, but I don't think that's really a valid one. Paul Endersby put something together years ago that was simplicity itself (I made a few posts showing people how to use it for DCS World and uploaded examples to user files) so it can be done with minimal cost and effort and would massively benefit those who want to take advantage of such a function, as well as increasing the immersion. Maybe in 10 years time? -
It's on my head, in my avatar

Some enterprising bright spark in the community will doubtless add it as a mod long before any official implementation

Thank you - was about to give up. Everything has been ready since my last post, but I needed to know if the bugs were mine or with the sim. That is weird, though, as it's a new, clean install and zero issues and good performance so far - and no mods at all. I'll probably just upload with the proviso that the guided bombs tute is unlikely to work.
-
Yup - the helicopters have been some of the best performers in VR for me over 4 different PCs since 1.5 - even when 2.5 was first released and VR took a huge nose-dive I was flying around NTTR with the Gazelle and zero issues, just like prior to that in Normandy with 2.1 at hedgetop height with the Ka-50. Still have a video of that I made for YT. Since then things have gradually got better so if it's that bad for you, you either don't have the right hardware or you have settings or other issues, I'm afraid.

Well I just bought it, but I had yet again forgotten that "release" means open beta - which I don't use (and won't argue about so don't bother, please) and tbh I disagree with the way ED do open beta, but as I can do nothing about that, like with the F-16C I will just wait and do other things in the mean time. Be a nice challenge to fly this helicopter, though, and testing the AI crew performance on release will be interesting.

Yup - the unguided bombs tutorial mission is a complete mess. If anyone can have a look and comfirm this, I'd be grateful. Specifically: It's not possible to bring up the radio menu at any time: It's therefore not possible to carry out the instructions concerning JTAC comms, even after active pause has been released: On active pause release, the JTAC interaction text reappears and stays on the screen indefinitely and it's still not possible to bring up the comms menu (by both HOTAS assigned button or the keyboard). The mission therefore has to be abandoned. I may be able to fix it - I don't know at this stage. Shame, cos the voiceovers I did for this sound very nice!

Ah, I was very tempted by that mod when I saw it a couple of days ago (I think). I was put off by the cockpit displays - same reason I haven't got the JF-17, which otherwise looks like a great aircraft. I just don't like 'glass' cockpits, much preferring "steam gauge" style like the FC3 aircraft and this F-5E and the other analogue modules - although I may make an exception for the Apache, have to see. Although the Hornet is not a glass 'pit. it has 3 displays - and that's pushing it! But I bought that anyway, as I didn't know the F-16 was coming. Had I known... oh well, water under the bridge - it sits there unused, though. As for the training - I was quite surprised to find these issues because it's just the one of the tutorials. The others are pretty much okay apart from the poor grammar and I think many of the explanations are more complicated than they need to be or not using the best words. I did change some of them in the voice lines, but some I left as is. It's tempting to change the text messages, but I decided to leave them as they are, too. The one, guided bomb tutorial file has 3 intro lines almost the same and two JTAC lines the same, which is why I'm about to fly it and see what happens. A lot of the later lines have "pickle" sounds in the file, but they are not actually implemented, which is puzzling. I flew most of the others, but didn't complete the navigation one - this is one that I think is explained in a more complicated way than it needs to be. Also the "wing mechanization system" just sounds horrible. It's probably straight out of the NATOPs or whatever manual, but it's a crap title for a system, imho. 'Flap automation system' - or 'automatic flap system' or even 'automatic wing control surface system' would seem to be better ones. Then you could also implement a nice sounding acronym such as "FLATS", "AFLAS" or "ACOS"

Thanks, yes - many of my friends and relatives were okay after the vaccine, though not all of them and my wife had to be sent home from work, due to dizzy spells and dehydration, which I've also had on my daily dog walks. It's just a resulting sore throat that lost me my vocals. I was hoping I'd have the missions done today anyway, as I've managed to re-edit the lines and am much happier with them, but unfortunately, I just found the scripting for the guided bombs tutorial is something of a mess, so that will need flying to see how it pans out and then hopefully I'll be finished by end of tomorrow and can upload the files.
