Just got quoted by my local store that it will be A MONTH before they have 3800X or 3900X. No online retailers even list them today. So much for 7/7 launch (at least in Canada)

 :)

There will be huge benefit, I think. It’s not just about clock speed, but also instructions per clock, which have been significantly improved over second gen, and especially moreso over your first gen chip. It will be worthwhile, and you will be able to drop it into your existing motherboard.

PCWorld review is extremely promising! https://www.pcworld.com/article/3405567/ryzen-3000-review-amds-12-core-ryzen-9-3900x.html Toms Hardware is a bit more pessimistic https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ryzen-9-3900x-7-3700x-review,6214.html Also disheartened by availability. Looks like no one in Canada actually has these for sale on launch day (today).

We have actually moved away from using lip lights. Feedback from guys on the ground is that, when landing blacked out, the lip light is extremely visible from long range, and makes a great target for the bad guys. We hang green or red headlamps from our vests now, lower and out of line of sight, for map reading, etc. But I know what you mean about trying to look under the VR headset to check the gauges, I do it all the time! Muscle memory is strong.

[MISSING TRACK FILE] what is causing the plane to roll...
Sandman1330 replied to fitness88's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Check your rudder input. If your rudder (whether twist stick or pedals) is not centering correctly, it will cause yaw which leads to roll. It can be easy to miss your rudder axis when checking your centering. -
Small wish. Easy to fulfill actually...
Sandman1330 replied to Alpenwolf's topic in DCS Core Wish List
It's available for the USAF Aggressors coalition. You can set them to red when you make the mission and this will allow you to use the "Mig28" skin on a red aircraft. -
I was originally worried that my (our) boards wouldn’t provide enough power for the 12 and 16 core parts, but amazingly they managed to keep the TDP to 105w, so we should be able to handle it. Craziness. I don’t do a lot of multicore heavy work, so I’m leaning toward the 3800X myself. It costs $100 less, and at the same TDP but with 4 fewer cores, I’m hoping it will have additional boost / overclock headroom to eek out some extra single core performance. PS: I wonder if the 8 core parts will be on one fully enabled chiplet, or 2 half enabled ones... with the cache dropping from 64 in the 3900X to 32 in the 3800X, I suspect it will be just one chiplet. This should lower inter core latency, but I wonder what effect it will have on overclocking?

I wouldn’t worry too much about the speed, but the extra capacity is really nice. I’ve heard 32gb really helps with stutters; I’ve never tried on 16gb, but with my 32gb I never get stutters.

Day one buy for me. Almost 2 years ago I built on a high end X370 board, knowing the Ryzen first gen was a bit weaker but AM4 would have longevity, and in a couple years the Ryzen core would mature and I’d be able to upgrade. Had I bought intel then, I would be stuck with a 7xxx series; next week I’ll be running a 9xxx series-level chip, with no motherboard replacement. Glorious.

Operation Bactria (MP COOP 14), Afghanistan CAS
Sandman1330 replied to Habu23's topic in User Created Missions General
Thx. I was aware of this, but my group has never actually had more than 4 on at any given tine anyway. Unfortunately it’s just the cost of the workaround for the moment. On a side note, the tasking messages and voiceovers all use the players callsign (hawg, tusk, etc), so it’s not that hard to know who they are referring to. -
Operation Bactria (MP COOP 14), Afghanistan CAS
Sandman1330 replied to Habu23's topic in User Created Missions General
Hey guys, Since the “sound to country” bug doesn’t seem to be a high priority to fix, I have gone in and changed all triggers to “sound to all.” The mission now works. For several of the tasks, I’ve also moved the target points out of the trees to better align with the 2.5 map. There are still a couple tasks where this is a factor, but most work well. Finally, I’ve replaced some of the A10C with F/A-18C and added a probe/drogue tanker to allow for its use in the mission. With the TGP coming very soon to the Hornet, this mission will be very playable in the Hornet. All credit still to Habu23 for making this excellent mission, 7 years ago! Long live Operation Bactria! I am CPU bound. Even on the lowest settings possible, I cannot break 40ish FPS, with very low GPU usage. So I turned up GPU specific settings until I had GPU usage in the 90s and still around 40ish FPS, I stopped raising settings when FPS started to drop, indicating I was becoming GPU bound. However, I’d really really like to hit 80FPS - but no settings will allow it. That’s CPU bound. We will see in a couple weeks when I drop in a sweet Ryzen 3800X how much this changes!

[FIXED INTERALLY] Sound to country not working

+1 This has broken many of my favorite missions. -
Ability to program JDAM/JSOW in armory/refuel radio menu
Sandman1330 replied to zippoa's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Seems like a great effort, but doesn't work for me. Capture from F10 doesn't work in VR, and enter into aircraft does nothing. -
Ctrl numpad works again, I actually came to the conclusion that it no longer works when OTT is open, but works fine otherwise. It was when I did some testing awhile back, turning all settings to lowest then working up, that I found this problem. Even lowest settings, 45fps...

Wearing HP Reverb headset and HGU-55 helmet at the same time
Sandman1330 replied to CptClownfish's topic in Virtual Reality
You may want to consider comfort. I’ve flown in an HGU-55, and now fly in a 56, and neither are very comfortable for long periods. Just a thought. -
I think I know what you mean, it’s just the frame jumping from one to the next due to the lower frame rate. This is actually pretty much what ASW is designed to alleviate, which it does nicely. The trade off for this is of course the artefacting. Hopefully ED will implement support for ASW 2.0, which is supposed to greatly reduce the artefacts.
-
Best advice I can give, have your wallet ready because once you try it there is no going back! On a serious note, as far as DCS is concerned, mostly plug and play. Lower settings as necessary to get acceptable FPS. If you get stuttering or squiggly artefacts, try ctrl + numpad 1 to disable ASW. Happy flying!

He’s actually pretty correct, especially regarding point #1, which has been a pet peeve of mine for some time in game. Wrong section of the forum, perhaps.

I am CPU limited, I know that already. It just seems odd that it's exactly 40. Though the other day, after disabling ASW it was at 40 for awhile, then started to fluctuate back up to 50-60. I then turned ASW back on (as an experiment), and it dropped to 40, then would not go back up once I disabled ASW again. Strange. And yes, I am 100% sure ASW is actually disabling, as I know what artefacts to look for that indicate it is on (The squigglies and such).

I just tried it, and I felt it as well. Let me ask, are you using VR? The reason I ask is, with the hill directly in front of you on start, you are in prime position for something called "upslope illusion." This is the illusion that makes you feel that you are very nose down, because the apparent horizon to you is up in the sky (the top of the hill). The psychological impact is that you naturally want to raise the nose to bring it level to the "horizon," but of course it isn't the real horizon. Having done a mountain flying course fairly recently, I can tell you that this is a VERY powerful illusion. I can see it having an effect at the start of this mission, when you first pull into the hover. The other possible point is that you are so low on fuel, your C of G may be fairly far back - though the placement of the fuel tanks on a Huey is pretty close to the mast, so this shouldn't have a profound impact. I think it's the upslope illusion that you're feeling.

Interesting! I’d still like to figure out why I’m locked to half frame rate though, whether we look at frame time or FPS, I’m still capped at 40, very consistently and seemingly independent of where I look. I’d expect it to improve if I look at sky, but still no change. I’m going to try messing with Nvidia CP settings.
-
Thx Wexler, I just have to find time to try it out! I thought the same, but after some research it seems ATW works by filling in dropped frames on a frame by frame basis, rather than always replacing every second one like ASW. It doesn’t work by locking the frame rate, so that shouldn’t be it. I’m thinking vsync, but I also think I’ve already verified it’s off in the past. Hoping to check nvidia CP tonight and see if it’s gone back on or something...

Yes, ASW is turned off, that is what us Oculus users are trying to say. I’ve confirmed through three different methods and via the removal of the artefacting that it is definitely off. Reprojection is a non issue as oculus users do not even use steamvr, oculus is natively supported by DCS. Something else is locking our headsets to half frame rate, it is NOT ASW. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=201746
