When I flew the Harvard II (Texan II) I think we were taught the slip technique, but that’s because that thing has such spindly landing gear you can’t land with any crab at all. Got a buddy who rode the silk after landing hard and initiating a go around, only to find out he couldn’t get 3 green again afterwards... Didn’t know that about the 777, cool!

The crab technique is probably used because the wing low technique risks scraping low hanging stores on the runway, like fuel tanks. Commercial airliners also crab rather than slip to avoid scraping under wing mounted engines.

ETA for fixing FA/18 & F-14 immunity to Flankers' jammers?
Sandman1330 replied to BattleAxes Skinner's topic in General Bugs
The enemy aircraft were hot, over 900kts closure, so definitely not notching. This happens to me consistently against AI, I haven’t done enough BVR against other players to say conclusively if it happens in MP as well. Again, not sure if something else is at play, but I had always just kind of chalked it up to a poor or simplified implementation of jamming... -
You may be right, I was thinking of SSAA/FSAA. However, in DCS 4x MSAA has a huge performance hit since the deferred shading was implemented, so there will be performance savings there.
-
In addition to a PD of 1.0, at that resolution it may be possible to go without any MSAA at all as well. Right now I run MSAA x4 and PD 1.5, so rendering 6x the pixels. Now if it would just be possible to actually buy it...

I really had high hopes for this thing, but it is looking more and more like vapourware. I’ve pre-ordered the Rift S on Amazon, which should ship on May 21. I can cancel up to then, and I then have 30 days after I get it to return if need be. Therefore, if the Reverb shows up before late June, I should still be able to return the Rift. Maybe I’ll even order both and return one after trying them. At least this way, if the Rift goes into back order I’m at the front end. Still hoping for the Reverb to materialize, but the reviews on the Rift display are good...

ETA for fixing FA/18 & F-14 immunity to Flankers' jammers?
Sandman1330 replied to BattleAxes Skinner's topic in General Bugs
I'm wondering if the Hornet truly is immune to jamming right now. I have found that I often have difficulty achieving a stable STT until within a certain range, usually 30NM or so against an AI MiG29. Before that, attempting to lock will give me a very brief STT, followed by a lost track and return to RWS. While this isn't a correct depiction of what jamming would look like (I shouldn't even be able to see them in RWS, as range information is denied), it does seem like there is some effect there. Or maybe it's just still bugs in the Hornet's radar, but it should be able to maintain STT outside 30NM... -
Hopefully that’s all it is! I plan on buying one of these from a store with a robust return policy (Microsoft store or Amazon), if the performance in DCS isn’t good enough or if there are visual quality issues, I’ll return it and get a Rift S.

In the reddit post, they said it’s a distribution issue, so could be legit...

Looking for some more BuDs (BUsy DadS) to fly and chat with?
Sandman1330 replied to GTFreeFlyer's topic in Multiplayer
That’s pretty much exactly how we operate! Our server runs 24/7 with a sandbox mission where one can go on solo and practice 1v1 or BVR against AI, do some boat work, or even aerobatics. If someone else joins, we can do coop or PvP stuff as well. We are very casual and relaxed, and sometimes just go on to goof off. I think our little group would fit in with you guys nicely. Can you PM me your discord info? I’d like to join up and invite my other guys if that’s OK. -

Maybe not join, as we’ve got our own group going, but I’d certainly like to affiliate with you guys and maybe do some joint stuff! Do you have a discord or anything? My guys use Facebook messenger as we all know each other IRL, but I’ve been thinking of standing up a discord -

Oh, so it’s an ME bug, perfect. I’m sure it will get fixed down the road. Thx! -

Hey guys, I’ve got a group of 4 BuDS that I hang out with, but as busy as we are, only 4 guys means the server is usually empty! I’ve got a dedicated server and TS. If you guys are interested in affiliating with us, I’ll give you access to my server and TS, and you guys can use it whenever you want. Located in Canada on a fibre gigabit line. PM me if you are interested! -

Has anyone played this recently on the latest Open Beta? For some reason, the sound for the voiceovers does not play for me anymore. The message pops up, and the mission activates, but no sound. I've tried both the A10 and the Hornet (which I put into the ME myself some time ago, it used to work). I've also downloaded a completely "clean" version off the user files to make sure it wasn't any of my modifications, and surely enough that doesn't work either. The mission entirely uses the vanilla editor and triggers, so no scripting at all. I'm pretty good with triggers, and I've analyzed them, and from what I can tell if the message is appearing the sound also should work as they are off the same trigger. I've tried opening and re-saving the mission with the latest version of DCS, as sometimes this fixes compatibility of older missions, but no dice. Is anyone else having this problem too? I find myself constantly coming back to this mission, the design and quality just hasn't been matched in the many years that have gone by since it was created. I really hope I can get his working again! -
Flying the Tomcat in VR, during moonless night
Sandman1330 replied to Kenan's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I don’t have a lot of actual IMC time as the helicopter I fly isn’t rated for icing (which we get a lot of up here in Canada), but the biggest thing they emphasized for us during both fixed wing and helicopter IFR training is to memorize attitude and power settings. Attitude + power = performance. So at a given speed, you should be flying a given attitude and power setting. Maintain this attitude through your turns and you will maintain altitude. Crosscheck the altimeter and airspeed to ensure you’re still on. Don’t use the VSI, especially in older aircraft as the amount of lag in that instrument is significant. You’ll see the altimeter hand start to move before the VSI moves accurately. As for the leans, I’ve never really had an issue with them. Like I said, I haven’t done much actual IMC, but it’s never been much of an issue. I find you’re most likely to get out of sorts transitioning to instruments from visual (as you enter cloud), it takes a few seconds to get the brain to make the transition. -
And, in the end we are basing our predictions on number of pixels. When most of us run a CV1 at 1.8-2.0 PD, we're already pushing twice the pixels of the CV1. When we bump down to PD 1.0 for the higher res, are we really pushing that many more pixels? (I'm not in a position to do the math right now but subjectively I think it's going to be close)

May 6th release: https://www.roadtovr.com/hp-reverb-vr-headset-announcement-price-release-date/ Also confirmed on HP site: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/workstations/mixed-reality-headset/index.html

I wonder how that works, as the tracking system is completely different... Would you have to keep the sensors set up for the controllers? You wouldn’t be mixing up the ability to use Vive controllers with the Index, possibly?

Exactly what I did when I heard about the common problem. -
Hmmm, weird. I use a full installation in web GUI no render mode, and no dice.

Yes, real pilots memorize this stuff. We do a yearly exam on identifying it by sight, and have to know the capabilities and how to defeat individual systems. Which are IR, which are RF and the tactics for each, their ranges, min altitudes, all that stuff. It’s a full time job!

DCS World Dedicated Server
Sandman1330 replied to USSR_Rik's topic in Multiplayer Server Administration
Include it in the briefing for the multiplayer missions that you host, that’s what shows up in the multiplayer list for server description. -
Still doesn’t work for me.
