  1. Bombs are difficult to use, and inaccurate, whilst S24A is pretty much place piper, release, watch things die to its huge warhead. My squadron places more faith in the s24 series and groms. We use hardly anything else for ground attack in the main as its too unreliable for little if any gain.
  2. Hey dark This sounds like a pretty cool idea, i havnt seen any full mig21 squadrons! Seen you posting about the aircraft and enjoyed mig 21 discussions. I tried to PM you, but dont know if it sent. Could you please pm me and let you know if you received this message, because im quite interested in a mig 21 squadron and would love to be a part of it. I could also could bring friends too if desired. please refer to my pm if you got it and the following thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=154185
  3. MIG 21 probably stands more of a chance v Mirage 2000C than a plane built for ground attack as mentioned.
  4. MIG-21 is an excellent aircraft for its time, and can be utilised effectively in a modern scenario, but it shouldn't be challenging a F 15 in a one on one fight. Really doesnt make sense from multiple perspectives in the first place. Best downing stuff like A10s and doing interception rather than CAP, maybe some ground attack of its own. You see people like Hadwell and others getting plenty enough kills in MP when the Mig-21 is flown knowing its stubby delta wings just arnt cut out for a dogfight with monsters like the Su 27 and F 15. I have the MIG 21, love flying it (badly), look forward to inviting 3 friends with me to go hunting lone F 15s that are being lazy thinking they own the sky and slip up, as well as Mirages. No need to play fair in a military sim when your aircraft is old.. More MIGs should team up with Sus and multiply their effectiveness in MP. The Mirage im looking forward to seeing how it performs. Its not so much how it performs against the MIG-21 im interested in, but more how it stacks up against the SUs, MIGs, and F15s. I think its going to be a lot of fun.
  5. Thats how its done.
  6. Have to go out so have to be brief so sorry if these arnt in lots of detail. 1. These are the new versions of DCS in OPEN development, that are being released to players to test them before they are officially released. It was done in two wavfes, 1.5, and 2.0. The end result will eventually be a fully complete 2.0 build of DCS available to players. It is a huge update to the games base engine, including graphics etc. For now I recommend sticking with normal dcs or upgrading to the latest version of the 1.5.1 BETA version until 2.0 is more stable. Eventually, 2.0 once its ready will replace these versions of DCS entirely. You will not be able to run 2.0 as it currently only supports the Nevada map, not the default one. This will be changed before it is finished to also support the main, caucasus map. Modules will work for ANY version of DCS, but there might be bugs in the TEST versions until 2.0 is finished and no longer alpha or beta. 2.0 is a huge update, not separate. 2.This is personal preference usually, but for you and your system that isnt that great, id buy them through the store NOT through steam. This will save you from having steam eat resources up in the background whilst you play. Note that also Steam keys only work on steam (i believe), store bought only on the standalone non steam launcher of DCS. They are not compatible as the cd keys are different. So pick one method and stick to it. 3. No, other than the CD keys bought in the the ED store do NOT work on steam. So again, either buy through the DCS store or steam, dont try to combine these methods or youll have a bad time in the main, ive found. 4. Stick to the free SU 25 T, and learn it well for now. See if you can run 1.5 using this free module. Then if all is good pick up Flaming Cliffs 3, in the sale, which is a good mid fidelity module to start off with. The study sims are great but can be very offputting to someone new, especially if you pick something which can be a little bitchy like the KA50. On that note, id also avoid helicopters - you can get away with a joystick throttle on fast movers ive found (not advised though) but on helos if you dont have a dedicated collective you are going to have a bad time. 5. Its possible but it would be better to just google FacetrackNoIr and see if you can get ahold of a webcam that it works with on the cheap. Good luck and welcome to DCS!
  7. Assets like this as a former games dev, need optimising. It doesnt just affect VR, it affects everyone including those with multi monitor setups. VR just notices it harder due to need for consistent high framerate. The fact I get a very, very smooth experience in the sky, and above cities until im very close to very certain assets, says a few of them might need work. ED have done an excellent job on this so far.
  8. As much as I love the KA-50, it was a complete bastard to learn, and it took me 2 years of on and off play myself to finally understand how to fly the thing to a competent level as well as its systems. This would have been much speeded up if I had someone to learn off rather than relying on youtube videos, and blind luck. At that point in time there were no embedded tutorials for the shark. They also helped alot, especially the one with the datalink, when it came along. I can definetly relate to it being difficult to get into, but thankfully its depth kept drawing me back and now there is solid VR support I cant see myself leaving any time soon as it is now the definitive sim for me. I would however, not recommend the KA 50 for beginners! Flaming Cliffs 3 is a much better start, a variety of aircraft, and you can get used to basic principles, gauges etc much quicker and concepts do transfer over between airframes. I hope module makers, and Eagle Dynamics, continue to refine, build and provide FREE campaigns, and tutorials that always ease new players into their chosen aircraft. Refining some of how these are laid out, and presented is important for player retention. As is increasing their quality. Most people WANT to keep playing, and enjoy learning. It is avoiding that 'frustration' wall where you find something that just isnt documented or explained well that is important for module designers as well as EDs. A short, introductory campaign would be great with some modules for sure, where emphasis is on flight, recon etc. I think on a whole, Blacksharks campaign eased you in relatively well. A good start and fix would be moving the FC3 missions into the tutorials section proper.. as that confused the hell out of me the first time I played that module.
  9. Hi Mbot, I am a coder by trade, If this was ever to make it into a github project once the foundation is made, I would consider contributing, and helping with pull requests etc when I get time. No pressure in that regard, just a suggestion . What you are doing and already have completed is pretty amazing and everyone is looking forward to it.
  10. Hey guys, british guy here looking for a squadron to fly with, and learn from, along with a friend and possibly other members of our gaming group. The squadron we eventually join in DCS would be the one we exclusively fly within. My thread posted in MP section describes more. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=154185 Considering I see you are putting together a Mirage Flight, and have both KA 50 and MI 8 flights available, this looks possibly close im going to get as someone who has no interest in american planes or hardware on the whole. Note although I am mostly trained for helos (Ka 50 for a few hundred or so more flight hours) im primarily interested in now learning and flying fast movers in a group. My interests as far module / flight priority would likely be: 1: MIRAGE / MIG 21 2: SU 27 (33 at a absolute stretch) 3: KA 50 and MI 8 Looks like you are a great bunch of guys so thought id make this post, sorry for the necro. So yes, count me as standing at the ready in that regard as best as free time and december allows!! *excitement intensifies* [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHo7bqp3_Xw[/ame]
  11. Dont think they have modelled interiors so this wouldnt work.. Also Oculus Rift consumer version is going to be £400 ish.. not that expensive, its same price as a high end HOTAS. As long as you have a pc bought in last year you will be ok. I have a Radeon 290x, and it runs at acceptable framerates.
  12. Typical Saitek for you. It either works well, or it plain ol doesnt work / breaks. No inbetween (as evidenced by my joystick). But honestly anything im pushing around with my legs, I want made out of metal.
  13. My X52 Pro is a pretty nice stick, one of the better joysticks I have had. As a total aside - do not get saitek pedals. They soon degrade, my saitek pro combat pedals broke within 4 months of receiving them. Saving up for some crosswinds at christmas, as the CH pedals look too plastic for me to enjoy them.
  14. It is a great plane, dont get me wrong, I just for some reason have no interest flying one! See you out there hopefully, will be watching my mirrors in the shark for gau 8 fire! :helpsmilie:
  15. Hello All, I and some other members of my gaming group are getting heavily into DCS and are considering joining a wing. Due to time commitments we are looking for a wing that is not over the top on the commitment front (it is for fun after all), but still plays seriously and tries to fly missions realistically. All of us, apart from in using the KA-50 are pretty new / inexperienced, so having some other pilots to learn off and to fly with would vastly improve our flight experience. I cant speak entirely for the others, but I am interested in the following aircraft: KA 50 - This was my first DCS module, and id like to think I am to some degree 'competent'. I have a feel for the airframe, and can can utilize all its systems to a basic capacity. My flight procedures probably need a lot of work, and more advanced functionality of say the ABRIS ive still to really dig into. That I am mission capable, if rusty, and ive managed quite a few of the deployment campaign missions. MIG-21 - Loving this aircraft, just learning the airframe as of now. I would not say I am mission capable in this aircraft, but id love to get to that stage and fly this with a committed wing. Mirage - Have this purchased and intend to learn and fly it as soon as its released, same as the MIG 21 above. MI-8: Have this module from a sale. Havnt dug into it, but it seems a very interesting craft and again am open to learning it and filling a role there. I love russian helicopters! FC3 - I have completed all the basic tutorials with the SU-27 and have also flown the MIG -29. Would be rusty but able to be mission capable relatively quickly. Flying the SU25 would also be a pleasure but I have not extensively studied the SU-25. I am looking for a group focused more on flying European or Russian aircraft, I dont particularly like flying American birds for some reason. I just dont find them interesting, outside of the F-14. Would be available on some weekends, and could commit to several hours of mission with notice. Up for plenty of drop in and go action in the week when available on nights 8pm GMT + also. As for hardware we are a mixed bunch, not everyone is at fortunate, but we all have flight sticks. I am currently using Oculus, x52 pro, and im replacing my broken pedals with some crosswind pedals in january as im sick to death of crappy saitek products. Any questions, please ask! Looking forward to getting more out of this excellent sim.
  16. Ah, I don't know where I got the moving map idea from. The cues on the HUD will be more than welcome enough, considering in MIG-21 you are using radials and rsbn for directions!!! As for the switch well... of course its probably meant for EMERGENCY use only, but im sure it will be exciting to mess around with. :music_whistling::joystick:
  17. I honestly think that is the best idea. Server should be able to host whatever mission or map entirely CD-KEY free in regards to any map or module. Only clients connecting to play should need relevant modules and / or maps. Im quite sure we ll see plenty of georgian servers remain, i for one arnt really interested in Nevada. Would rather some middle eastern region or far east region. There is plenty room for a variety of servers. As soon as 2.0 is released properly (not alpha or beta but proper full release) i can see most people upgrading and there being no division in that regard. Just in an awkward transitional phase that on long run will be much better for DCS. This release with oculus support for example has also really gotten me interested in the sim again and back in the cockpit of the KA 50 and Mig 21, as well as picking up the Mirage. Even got me and my friend considering finally joining a squadron after 2 or 3 years. so yes onwards and upwards!
  18. Sounds awesome indeed from your description, looking forward to it for sure. I love the MIG-21, still learning it. Is a beautiful aircraft, but looking forward to having a more up to date toy alongside it for double the fun and variety. Hvant really flown any more modern fast movers, MIG-21 is the first jet sim ive actually tried getting into, FC3 just isnt at the simulation level i feel comfortable with. It seems bizarre to have no interactive cockpit for me. Even with a HOTAS I love the feeling of being able to interact with the actual planes systems. Would be quite interesting also to see a mirage and mig flying together! Nevermind getting into a merge.. although in that situation my money would be on the Mirage. Used to a bit of complexity. Doing missions in the KA-50 which im somewhat competent at apart from the more complicated operations of the ABRIS. Hopefully the moving map system of the Mirage wont quite be as obtuse, as that thing still gives me nightmares sometimes!
  19. This is shaping up so well, super excited. First time i've ever been excited by any BLUFOR aircraft at all. .. Do we get a fictional russian skin? xD That spin mode switch indeed sounds like its going to be fun to mess with. Just to ask, how complex is this aircraft to fly compared to say, the MIG-21 for the pilot? Just interested in how quickly the testers got familiar with the airframe and its capabilities. Been looking at some of the shots of the cockpit linked in the discussion threads and it looks super sexy.
  20. Well done to the winner, was a good idea and will do the same if i find myself in the same position !
  21. Im all for INS alignment being fully simulated as far as a cold start is concerned. Reason being this makes the quick start up time of something for example like the MIG-21 actually really useful, and simulates how quickly such aircraft can actually get off runway in the real world. The Black Shark has INU alignment time of three minutes, and honestly that isnt too long when running a mission from a cold start. As said above this can drastically alter mission design and potentially multiplayer balance if i think about it (havnt played enough of it myself, so thats a purely logical extension of the above arguement) So yes if included, definitely a selectable option that has no effect outside of single play.
  22. Glorious
  23. Very nice of you to support leatherneck.. really is a great module and its nice to see people have been understanding of the issues surround 1.5 It isnt often you see a gaming community react in a balanced fashion to patch issues! I have a friend called Zweistein who is also heavily into soviet era planes and tech but is a student and cannot currently get his hands on the MiG 21. If you want another name for your hat, i nominate him for the christmas draw!!! Your method of selection sounds very fair, there are probably numerous 1 to X generators on the internet that can do it in a fair manner. EDIT: Here might be one that is useful! https://www.random.org/integers/
  24. I realise that Oculus support is very early days, but just wanted to make a note of this somewhere for the devs. Currently, when the kneeboard is open, it displays entirely translucent, and almost entirely off the screen. This makes the kneeboard unusable when in the rift. I know text / gui work for this is WIP even by Eagle Dynamics, but would love to eventually see the MIG 21 able to support the Oculus entirely as its great flying her from within VR.
