1. Well, it has FFeedback, so try to turn forcefeedback off in DCS settings. Also check your 'cental position trimmer mode' setting and try both options.
2. modern radars utilise doppler effect for target acquisition. A spinning helicopter rotor enhances this effect, so no wonder, that helicopter RCS is huge, especially when viewed from above. So BIGNEWY is right ofcourse, there is nothing unrealistic about it. And really nothing we, as helicopter pilots, can do about it. We stick out as a sore thumb. source: [ame=http://dspace.dsto.defence.gov.au/dspace/bitstream/1947/10130/3/DSTO-TR-2547%20PR.pdf]http://dspace.dsto.defence.gov.au/dspace/bitstream/1947/10130/3/DSTO-TR-2547%20PR.pdf[/ame] I read through it, even thou I don't understand all of that :) TLDR: helicopter RCS is huge thanks to doppler effect happening on rotor blades. Modern radars can even recognize helicopter type by the typical backscatter it receives. That document is all about simulation of this effect and analysis of data acquired by radar. By the acquired data, one can analyze the radar return from helicopter and can recognize characteristic return from helicopter fuselage, helicopter engines, tail rotor, main rotor and various other parts of the helicopter. Spinning rotor disc is one huge source of return signal, which is strongest when viewed (of course) from above.
3. ABRIS works on battery power quite well. I never noticed this to be a big deal for me when repairing. I don't need shkval, I don't need UV-26, I don't need HUD, in a friendly base. But I can see, how it can make ones' life easier. For me, plugging ground power is bigger stress, because I always forget to unplug and then the ground crew shouts "hey, what are you doing!?" and headphones are dangling from my helicopter (or so I imagine). and silentHunter, 10km kills, you are quite a sharpshooter. I don't keep records, but I think, that 9km was my longest distance kill. At a distance this far, the laser stops its countdown before the vikhr reaches his target, so I try to avoid such long shots.
4. what does this accomplish? Please explain.
5. or you can fly with FD on. I do, I think it is more natural to my tastes. I can fly perfectly well without it, but it doesn't feel right for some reason. Only transitions between known safe WPs are done without FD. ofc, any maneuver is done better when you don't have to fight the AP and hold the trimmer down for the entire duration of said maneuver.
6. and also, the Ka-50 is heavy. It is smaller, but heavier than a Mi-8 (without cargo). So aerodynamic drag is smaller, while it is a faster and heavier aircraft=more inertia. I started with Mi-8 just recently, but I immediately noticed how fast it is able to stop compared to Ka-50. I think, that a bigger rotor diameter counts when stopping/accelerating. Someone more knowledgeable should enlighten us, how single bigger rotor compares to two counter rotating smaller rotors acceleration-wise. And as IonicRipper said, anticipate that and fly accordingly. For example, when you are in a battlezone and you expect you will have to do sharp turns or stop without warning, never go faster than 150~170km/h. Also, I found out, that I am able to stop pretty fast doing this> 300-150km/h braking by pulling cyclic, nose to ~20-25°, collective down, watch VVI, not to climb or fall, adjust collective accordingly. At about 130-150kmh turn sharp left, nose to about 5°, collective up and stop by skiding to the side, like a skier, when he passes the finish line. Also, using this maneuver, you dont need to watch VVI religiously, you can look out of the big left window and estimate your vertical velocity by observing the relative ground movement below you. This works for me :) I may review the exact numbers in this last paragraph when I get home and try this, I'm not exactly sure about the figures, I do it by 'feeling the right speed', so take it as a rough estimate :)
7. I wonder if there is any clutch in modern helicopter engines/transmission. When the generator turbine is on a different shaft than the power turbine, is there any need for a clutch?
8. Yeah, I realize that. Developing muscle memory with Ka-50 was possible, so it must be the same with Mi-8. Just practice, practice, practice.
9. yeah, I'm struggling with VRS all the time. I've flown the Ka-50 quite a lot, to the point, that I don't even think about VRS, flying to avoid VRS is in my muscle memory now. Mi-8 is a different beast, so I need to learn this skill again. But I love it so far. Amazing detail, and an amazing character this helo has. I also love the fact, that it is possible to research this helicopter much deeper than it is possible to research the Ka-50. There are many many countries operating it and also RL Mi-8 pilots are on this forum. So, manuals and all the intricacies of the inner workings are easier to get to. AlphaOneSix, special thanks to you for your "How it works:" documents. It makes it much more enjoyable (at least for me, I need to know everything there is to know about a subject I'm interested in)
10. sorry for necroing this thread, but this sound was bugging me, I could not sleep not knowing what causes it! :) Thank you AlphaOneSix, you made my day. This Mi-8 module is getting better every minute. I keep researching and I feel like I need to know all there is to know about this heli.
11. I don't know what is "ZSU closed". If you mean ZSU-23-4 Shilka, then you can destroy it with AP ammo. Or if you have Vikhrs left, destroy it with them while keeping greater distance >=4km. ZSU-23-4 is kinda dangerous. Also, when firing cannon, remember to re-lase to calculate distance accurately. I am sometimes lazy to lock my targets when firing cannon, so the distance is not updated. I don't know about your style, but shitty aiming can be caused by that. The distance is not correct, re-lase to make sure that the distance displayed is correct. ...we went pretty OT here.
12. You are too far. The Shkval lock on a distance this far is a lottery. Also, you can try to make your locking cage smaller, that sometimes helps. Also, sometimes tweaking the brightness and contrast can help (I read that, never tried that personally, you can try and see). Also, if you can not lock a target, switch your weapons to manual (leftmost switch on the center weapons panel, right below the unoperable black jettison button) and fire anyway, vikhr will follow the laser, it does not care if it is locked, or not. Just don't be further than ~8km away (even that distance is not certain in windy conditions)
13. yes, this is how it behaves. The illumination intensity knob does nothing, its just an on-off switch. I like to fly at night with NVG, blue cockpit illumination, turned down ABRIS and SHKVAL brightness and also HUD on night mode and illumination turned down.
14. no BS1 is a standalone application and cannot be included into DCS:W. I think, that you cannot buy the BS1->BS2 upgrade now. If you bought it when it was available, then you can somehow make it work. But you cannot buy it in 2016 anymore. Your only hope is to either play BS1 and be happy with it, or buy BS2 module for 40$. Yeah, I know. Pay twice for one game  I searched for this exact solution in 09/2015 and after a week of googling and reading forums about BS1->BS2 upgrade, I rather bought the whole BS2 module to be able to play multiplayer.
15. I can't answer your first question, regarding uncaging Shkval, but the training missions only use simulation mode, yes, that is how it is supposed to be. A little piece of advice if I may - don't bother with game mode. Turn it off right away, do all the training missions and hop onto Deployment campaign. Game mode accomplishes nothing, you'll spare yourself learning bad habits by avoiding game mode altogether.
16. as stated many times before, there is no good or bad way to do that. Just use the AP/trim however you like most. I do most of my flying in FD mode. I only disengage FD during autohover, ENR mode or when I'm flying straight, then I use classic trimmed AP channels and FD off. In this video, I think, that the pilot used FD mode on. There is no point fighting the 20% authority when doing crazy maneuvers.
17. johnco you didn't say, that you unchecked the "HEAR LIKE IN HELMET" option. in options>audio tab
18. johnco install Devrims' rotor sound mod http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=93448 I got fed up with the default BS looping rotor sound pretty soon.
19. does auto turn to target work in trimmed hover? Doesn't it need autohover to work? http://www.simhq.com/_air13/images/air_430a_003.jpg
20. here http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=93618 updated yesterday, awesome
21. everything explained here, there is nothing more to add:
22. weird, it should work above 4m
23. Hi Devrim, thank you for your awesome mods (I use your blue cockpit and rotor sounds). I'm also interested in this mod, mainly because of the laser temperature indication. I dont care as much for westernized Shkval, Ekran and HUD symbology, I'm pretty much used to all the azbuka readings, but the laser temp is neat really. Does it work with DSCW1.5? Also, is it possible to have only the laser temp indication, while keeping the original russian HUD, Shkval and Ekran azbuka information? I will probably switch to cyrillic cockpit soon, so the helicopter is as realistic as it gets, now that I pretty much remember all of the functions in the westernized cockpit and mostly I dont need to read the captions above buttons and switches (also I can read azbuka, so its nice to practice a bit).
24. yeah, exactly that.
