Opinion: Devil's Canyon or Skylake?
Mt5_Roie replied to Mt5_Roie's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Well I plan on at least upgrading the motherboard and CPU...Ram I have for the Devil's Canyon but would have to buy new for Skylake... As for why, well I figure I do a major upgrade every 3-4 years so I was about time. I got the machine 4 years ago and the only upgrades I've done to it was SSD, Graphics card, and RAM. -
need help with new PC - big issue

Check your bios boot order. Sounds like it's looking at usb first and mistaking one of your controllers for a hard drive. -
So looking to upgrade my motherboard and processor. Right now debating between Devil's Canyon or Skylake chips. Would be the I7 version. I've seen tons of data on Devil's Canyon and I know with my GeForce 980, and 16g of ram, I would be pretty well off. I would try to OC it to around 4.5 ghz to keep it stable. Skylake is newer and would require different ram which I don't own already, so cost would be about 150 dollar higher. Plus it's newer as not as much data on it as I would have liked. Pretty much fly mostly DCS and get around 90-120 fps right now with my i7-2600k machine. I also have been doing some FSX flying and a lot of X-plane flying. I play GTA V as well, and whatever my kids like to play on my machine as well. Opinions? I'm in not rush since I think my current rig should be more then fine for 1.5 right now.
-
Well, it depends on how much money you can spend...but I would beef it up a bit: RAM: get something faster and with a lower CL...I like my RAM around 8-10 CL range, and get at least 16g Graphics: The 970 is great, if you can afford the 980 go for that...but the 970 should be good for quite a bit of time Processor: I'm a fan of the i-7....I find more OC control, but if you don't care of OC then i-5 is fine. Power: I would get 850w because the 970 is going to suck up a lot of power.

When is the best time to really buy hardware?
Mt5_Roie replied to Fakum's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'm looking at upgrading my rig as well, even though my current one should be able to handle 1.5 without issues. Everything on my current rig is new expect the chip and motherboard (current have a intel i7-2600k). So been looking at either going to Devil's Canyon version or Skylake intel chip. With Skylake I would have to get the motherboard, chip, and new ram since it uses DDR4 instead of DDR3, so basically adds another 150 to the price. What I do is look on newegg for sales and see if the parts I want ever go on sale. If they do I'll get it. Otherwise I'll wait a bit. The question is - what is your current rig now and can you upgrade small part at a time? -
A friend and I belong to a VR Aviators group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/VRAviators Trying to post weekly videos there, but been having some issues recording non-dcs stuff recently. The best way I can describe the oculus is that you get full immersion into the world. When I fly with my trackIR, I can still see my room and the things in it - so there is a safety net of my world I can escape to easily. With the Oculus rift you get immersed into the world that things feel real. You actually don't want to crash your plane. Plus, there are some amazing games and experiences out there for the Oculus rift which are amazing as well.

So a little update. I have a Thermaltake PSU that is 850w and I used it to power the 980 card with the built in PSU running everything else. Results were good, no crashes or issues. So I spent some time tonight and replaced the old 700w PSU with the 850w one and so far things appear ok. I tested DCS and did the instant action mission both using HDMI and DVI and was getting FPS from 85-120 depending on what I was doing. Before with the old PSU as soon as I hit the A/G button on the Targeting Pod it would go blank...so thats good. I did about a 15 minute flight with no issues. Next I tested GTA V and played for about 30 minutes with no hiccups. So thats good. Ran a stress test on the GPU and worked well. So it's looking better, but I'm hoping to do a longer flight tomorrow to make sure. My normal flights range from around 1-2 hours normally so I'll do one of those. Thanks for all the help guys!

Yeah there is a trick to turning them on. I've done it before. Basically connect the green wire to the black wire and it'll turn. Will test tonight and report back.

So opened my case to look at the PSU (I bought the computer whole back in the day...). The PSU is a Xtreme Gear XG-P700 700W which doing a quick search on shows it's not the best PSU. Plus it's only rated for 700 either way. I do have a 850w PSU that I was using for an old bitcoin rig which is missing most of the cables, but I know it has the video cable since thats what the rig was using. Would it be safe to hook up the 980 to that PSU by itself and have the Xtreme Gear XG-P700 700W ATX PSU power everything else? Because if that works, then it would show that it's truly the PSU and nothing else...but not sure how safe it is to run a GPU with its own power by itself.

Looks like you have a 850w PSU...I think my current rig has a 700w PSU in it. Is there any application that could check to see if its a power issue vs a driver issue?

I love it....hopefully things will only get better with DCS 1.5. Here's a video review I did when I first got it.

So here's my specs now: 3.4 ghz Intel I7-2600k OC to 4.0 ghz, ASUS P8Z68-V LX motherboard (which only goes up to PCIe 2.0), 16 gigs of ram. I originally had a GeForce 960 which I love and works great. But recently got the Oculus Rift DK2 and am going to get the release version when it comes out. It will require at least a 970...so figured I'd go ahead and get me a 980 SC. So it came in today and I installed it no problems. Downloaded latest driver version and began to test it. In GTA V I started getting some issues right off the bat. There was a forum post on how to fix it (requires to under clock the GPU a bit) and that did fix the issues. In FSX things went ok, but that sim is mostly CPU based. In my main flight sim (DCS World) it had big issues. I would load up a mission and initially it would get about 120 fps or more....but then it blacks out...sometime it would come back for a second or two before blacking out again. I tried under clocking the GPU, but that didn't help. So my question is - can my motherboard even handle this card? It's a 4 year old system at this point and I'm working on getting it upgraded. But would I ever be able to get this card working right with the current specs? I'm in the process of speccing out a new build with either Devil's Canyon or Skylark i7 in it, but probably won't be able to afford all the parts for another year. So whats your opinion? Should I go back to the GeForce 960 which worked fine for now, or should I try to figure out the issues with the 980? Do you guys have any idea where to start fixing it?

So tried it on the unit and it didn't seem to work. So I set up a Radio Transmission and it wouldn't let me use any value below 300 for the kilohertz.....but I tested the UH-1 and found most frequenceis were already used in the lower range. So I created it using 1100 kilohertz. I went in the UH-1 and it was able to find it....although it didn't play the wav file I attached to it. I still need to fly it to test it (will do that later today, but it seems to be pointing in the right direction). I did also add a FM frequency for the other troop location. Using the FM radio I was able to tune into the frequency (34 mhz) and I was able to hear the wav file associated with that radio transmission. So not sure why ADF wav isn't working....but will test later tonight when I get a chance to make sure the ADF is actually pointing to the right place.

So quick scenario here. I got an oculus rift and am enjoying flying with it. But with the A-10C the MDF's are hard to read which makes doing missions a little difficult. So what I've been doing is switching to the ALT-F1 view since it display the MDF's a lot sharper....but, they are to far to the sides to see well. So is there a way to tell it in the ALT-F1 view to move the MFDs closer together towards the center? What file controls that view? So here's another thing I figured I'd ask since I'm here. Is there a way to call up the MFDs in a similar view to the ALT-F1 view, but still retain the cockpit? Ideally it would be cool if I can map that to a joystick function when needed. That way I would be flying along, activate it the view, use it to destroy targets, and then disable it? While using ALT-F1 is fun, it's super scary to do with the oculus rift because you are floating in the air....stuff nightmares are made off.

I got a mod I'm working on for fun that if the throttle goes to idle the engine shuts off. When I start the plane up hot, it throttle is set to idle and thus turns off the engines right away. Is there a way to setup the throttle and other settings so it doesn't shut down right away when starting hot?

How to set up toggle switches (a tutorial)
Mt5_Roie replied to Spy Guy's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ok found this thread after coming back to my home cockpit after a half a year. So my cockpit has 4 GPWIZ devices and one Bu386 controller. Since upgrading my DCS to 1.2.10 all my old files don't work...well sort of. momentary push buttons work ok, but those that I modified with an Up statement don't work. So looking at this thread I have a couple questions. Seems like I should be adding Up commands in the device.lau for the aircraft (mods/aircraft/A10C)..is that correct? I understand the DIFF file method as well and seems that might be easier. But the question is where do you get the command number? Like for: d1376pnilu1375cdnilvdnilvpnilvunil How did he know that 1376 is what he wants for down and 1375 is what he wants for up? Is there a master list somewhere I can find the numbers from? I have about 150 buttons to program so I want to make sure I get a good understanding of this before I start. -
So after sometime off busy with work and family I finally decided to get back to working on my cockpit again. I had several updates waiting for me for DCS. I also got the F-86 module as well. The problem I'm running into is with the programming of the switches. Before the upgrades I had it programmed so it would detect the on and off moments (using up and down in the setting file). while it's still using the same file, it's not recognizing the off motion. not only that, but when I try to program new buttons and keys in, it creates a new file called DIFF. I'm not sure of this new format. So I would like to know what I need to do to get all my buttons and switches working again. I need to be able detect on and off like it did in the past. I'm ok with starting from scratch in programming everything...but just need to new what the steps are with the latest update.

I bought the F-86F and updated my DCS to the latest version. I was able to do the instant action missions ok. But when I created a new map and put some F-86F in there and launch it - it crashes. Can anyone help figure out why it crashes with the F-86F module?

Here's a update on my landings:

Thanks for all the advice guys. Will keep practicing.

So about 2/5 landings I'm still crashing and burning on. So I figured I'd grab the video from the bad landings last night and see if you can see what I"m doing wrong. Seems like no matter how well I think I have everythning, she falls out of the sky. So I humbly ask for you assistance in teaching me the error of my ways
