Not much info yet.. Kudos to DiscoLew over on hoggit for the heads up. https://thedigitallifestyle.com/w/index.php/2019/04/11/acer-announce-a-new-windows-mixed-reality-headset-conceptd-ojo/

Good stuff. I ditched MSAA and turned PD up to 2.1. Anisotropic filtering to 16x makes a noticeable difference for very little performance drop. Everything else on high. Terrain shadows flat, cockpit shadows medium. Global illumination off. Rain on. In fact I'll dig out one of my old threads which you may find helpful.... first test of DCS using 2080TI. DCS has moved on a bit since then. Edit. Here it is. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=221127

I would doubt that, but what it does mean is that the one core presently in use does not occasionally max out at 100% causing data to not be sent to the GPU with the resultant stuttering. You will see a big performance increase allowing higher settings and better fps, but how much, I have no idea.

My problem is the overwhelming amount of info I am having to learn with the F14. Every bit of new F14 info going in my right ear means a bit of F18 info falls out of my left ear. I will soon have forgotten how to fly the Hornet. My beloved Hog is almost a complete stranger to me now. :music_whistling:

Well spotted, but I think Cobra will want to strangle you! It is oft reported and being looked into. I want a pilot body for VR, really miss that in the F14. You can't even eject on the ground and take a walk around the bird. It's like you die immediately you pull the handle. Be even nicer to be able to egress the bird without pulling the handle..... The stunning detail of the bases in Nevada and PG map are crying out for the ability to be able to walk / be driven to the ramp, find the tail number of "your aircraft" and climb in. Currently, all that behind the scenes detail is wasted as you never see it. Eject from the Hornet and take a walk around the buildings by the ramp such as at Creech (shortest walk) or AlDhafra (nice tables and chairs with parasols to sit out with a cold one). You will be shocked at the details back there. I'd pay a modest amount for animations packs such as that. All adds to the immersion.

I have the Tomcat training mission I made on the Nevada map. I have not used Nevada since PG came out. One thing that stands out big time is the very marked performance increase on Nevada. It really is butter smooth, even when taxying on the ground.

Because on all my other modules, that hat switch is used for comms and I don't want to confuse the limited muscle memory I have. :)

Excellent. Thanks for the help guys. I thought pressing the lever down engaged auto sweep..... Had another look through the manual. I will have to map my China hat switch to auto and bomb mode. That's what you get for missing checks. When jester calls out the put wings in bomb mode, I've thought "dunno what that is yet, it'll be right, I'll find out how to do that later when I start learning how to deploy weapons". If I looked into it straight away, I would not be on here begging for help. Curses.

Yes, I can manually control wing sweep, I usually bring the handle all the way forward (flaps, slats and spoilers retracted) and they will stay there. As soon as I push the handle down into auto and close the clear cover, the sweep selector indicator flag immediately travels down to the bottom of the gauge and the wing angle indicator follows it. Odd thing is when taxying, the aircraft shadow shows the wings forward, but a look back shows they are indeed all the way back. Perhaps I need to do a repair. Jester assisted start hung a few times earlier this morning.

Had my first go with the cat yesterday afternoon, just learning where everything is in the cockpit basically. This morning I made a mission for it, purely as a Nevada training ground to learn to start it, learn nav systems ect. I do the jester assisted cold start and follow all the steps to the end, but when I put the wing sweep handle all the way forward, push it down into auto and close the cover, the wings retract to full sweepback and stay there, no matter what. The flag in the sweep indicator says either man or emer, depending on whether the handle is in or out. I do remember to press the reset button. I am obviously missing some step, but can't fathom what it is.

Just as it seems I am edging towards the Reverb, some more "leaks" arrive to throw the cat among the pigeons again. If the following is true, I just changed my mind..... again. Adjustable ipd we already know about. 2016 x 2240 panels. 120 degree FoV. Knuckles controllers. Requires 1070 or better. Shipping June 15th. On the downside for me and other rift owners is the fact it does not ship with the base stations, so it depends how much the headset is combined with the cost of those.

Having finally got my hands on the Stable branch F14 Tomcat and tried the startup tutorial, it is clear that the reverb will be essential. I can't read some of the placards clearly enough to be quick finding the switches and the tutorial page fades out.... Particularly the test switches on the right rear console. And that's with rift running PD at 2.2....

[NO BUG] [FALSE-POSITIVE] Virus alert. Beware Installing F14B
Tinkickef replied to Tinkickef's topic in Bugs and Problems
Strikeeagle and rudel. I broke one of my own internet rules last night. I read and then responded to an internet forum after consuming far more beer than I should have. Sadly it is a rule I break far more often than I would like. I just came on to delete my non constructive and passive aggressive responses to your posts, but found you had already replied. Please accept my apologies for my alcohol induced lack of judgement. Abject and grovelling apologies from a very hurty head. Now where did I put the paracetamol? -

And once again. I guess you think you are good?you may be right, but are you prepared to take responsibility? It's easy to be a mouthpiece on a forum. -

But yet. As said earlier. HTTP downloaded with no problems. Torrent did have problems. Are you so sure of your expertise that you are confident that you do not now have a trapdoor on your pc that you do not know about? I am a PC ignoramus, but I am quoting first hand empirical evidence. I am tentatively known as an expert in my own field,( mechanical engineering rather than electronics or programming) but one thing I have learned is that when I start thinking I am good, Fate tends to remind me that I am fumbling around in the dark, just like everyone else. 100s or may be many 1000s are resting on your answer Are you prepared to take the responsibility on for their DCS Welfare? And no, I am not being overly dramatic, many people just might have a nasty virus that you are poo poohing. -
[NO BUG] [FALSE-POSITIVE] Virus alert. Beware Installing F14B

Only on torrent apparently.... HTTP worked just fine. -
Just tried installing the F14 via the torrent and left it downloading. It stalled fairly early on due to defender detecting a Trojan in the torrent. It was called Trojan;Script/Foretype,A!ml which defender classes as a severe risk. Do not install the F14 without virus protection enabled. Someone out there on the DCS torrent has it on his PC. Bloody typical, I wait 6 months for the Tomcat to come to stable branch and it comes with an unwelcome Easter Egg because some a hole preyed on someone with sloppy PC protection. Currently trying the HTTP method.

Tested has put one through its paces....... A much more in depth and informative review than previously seen.

It is a terrain engine fix. The terrain engine can be thought of as similar to the mission editor we plebs use. It allows the user to input terrain features, it is not the terrain itself, it is the underlying program that oversees stuff like scale, speed over ground and pretty much everything you see.
-
Good find. I did not know that.
-
It would seem that since the terrain engine is affecting VR performance specifically, it is introducing latency in GPU rendering of the binocular view of the two screens. This has badly affected performance. Vulkan allows the game to utilise all cores of a CPU instead of just one (and a bit for audio on another core). If you have a quad core CPU, this will effectively use the currently redundant cores giving a huge increase in computational power, reducing lag and allowing all the bells and whistles to be turned up right to the full capability of the GPU.
-
Not sure what you mean. ASW is contained within the Oculus SDK and is entirely independent of DCS. It should just work, but only with Oculus products. Apologies if this is not what you meant.

Been quite a ride these last couple of weeks. First the Reverb unveiling, then finally got to download the F14 on stable last night, then we get the announced VR optimisation. It may be that the optimisation will get to stable branch at the same time the Reverb drops through my letterbox, which would be impeccable timing. Quandary So do I refrain from installing the Tomcat for a couple of months until the Reverb and optimisation arrives, for the full appreciation of that cockpit? The danger is that all three in combination would possibly lead to an involuntary leg spasm which would propel my chair backwards, through the open study door and straight down the stairs. Still, I would always be able to tell the doctors in the emergency room I had a rough ejection....

Interesting, but I note recommended specs for GPU is a GTX970 same as original rift, reverb recommended GPU is GTX1070; So I'm not holding my breath for a huge leap in resolution over the Rift with the Index. On that basis alone, and lacking any other hard information re Index before Reverb is launched; I will most likely order the Reverb. And then possibly repent at leisure. I'm lucky like that.

A little more speculation. Interesting stuff.
