System Utilization screenshot - suggestions for upgrade
oboe replied to oboe's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Actually a while ago, I doubled my RAM to 32GB by getting another pair of the exact same sticks of RAM I had already - G.Skill Trident Z F4-3200C16D-16GTZR. But when all 4 sticks were installed, though the system recognized 32GB, I had stability problems and the system would lock up after a short while. Either pair worked OK as 16GB, but I could not use all 4 sticks at the same time. I double checked the QVL for my mobo and found this one was not listed. Felt pretty foolish. I did just order 2 16GB sticks of RAM that I've doublechecked and made sure is on the QVL. Looking at the 2080 Super with interest. Wish I could justify a 2080 Ti but over $1000 for a single component is a psychological barrier for me right now. I was able to get more info on CPU usage using the Resource Monitor available in Task Manager, and that does show CPU 15 is often nearly at 100% usage. Does that mean a more powerful graphics card would be a waste and not improve frame rates much? -
Hey guys, Based on this screenshot showing my non-VSync'd frame rate and system utilization, can you make a suggestion as far as what component(s) I should be looking at to upgrade next? This is from a multiplayer server with I think about 58 ppl in it at the time; I'm running 1080p monitor with 60Hz refresh rate, but sometimes I use VR with a Lenovo Explorer where I get around 30-45 fps in VR graphics preset. I often hear how DCS is CPU-limited but it looks to me like a more powerful graphics card, followed by upgrading to 32GB RAM would be better? Full system specs in my signature. I would eventually like to play at 1440p or 4K, and also I'd like to get one of the next gen VR headsets after the market settles down and more people have tried them and reported their experience in DCS. Thanks/help!

For sure! A Korean terrain would also be a fitting home to the Mig-15 and Sabre...

The modules have such a long development period, I'll keep my wishlist to 1 aircraft per time period: WWII - P-38J or L Lightning Korean War - F9F Panther Viet Nam - F-4 Phantom Cold War - Panavia Tornado

Hope you feel better soon, Glowing_Amraam!

F-18 beach demo with improved sounds.

 That was a lot of fun to watch and listen to. If only my subwoofer went to 11, I'm sure I could've rattled the windows in my office... -
I'm interested to learn what you find out. I've been lead to believe 32Gb is almost essential for DCS multiplayer...

 I am really impressed too. I'm not a RL pilot and do not have a military background, but the ATC provided by Blacknight3022 sounded so authentic I decided to produce a transcript of it, to just to help me understand the format of ATC comms. This was streamed a year ago; I don't know what the server is like nowadays but I'm just so anxious to feel competent enough in an a/c that I can jump in and try it. I have to switch the Open Beta too, I think - I'm new and have been playing safe with the stable release while I try to get my bearings. This is a very complicated game, but I just love it and all the content people are producing for it.

Which of these 2 monitors would you choose, and why?
oboe replied to oboe's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks for replies guys. I didn't know about the TrackIR refresh rate lock; I have seen fps dips below 60 on NTTR. Maybe I should be saving for a new vidcard instead of monitor. -
  That was some of the best flying I've seen yet.

P-38J or L, for sure. Jack-of-all-trades and it would look so, so good in DCS.

These monitors on sale at Costco. I have a GTX 1080, and currently have a 27" curved screen Samsung 1080p monitor. Things I'm curious about: - I'm surprised the 4K monitor less expensive, - why does the monitor with the lower refresh rate have a faster response time? - both monitors support FreeSync - would it be worth switching to a AMD video card like the RX 5700 XT to get FreeSync support? I've heard some nVidia cards support FreeSync. I'm unsure about which is better - a cheaper, less capable AMD video card producing a lower but smoother frame rate with FreeSync, or a high refresh rate monitor coupled with a super-expensive video card to generate the highest frame rates possible?

Someday I'd like to sit in a VR P-38 cockpit in DCS, for the same reasons. Looking forward to the P-47 as well.

Samsung EVO SSD's and Rapid Mode.

Ntrospect, nice find. How much RAM do you have? I'm wondering if I'd run into problems in MP as I have only 16GB RAM. -
Thanks for this review. Sounds good so far; I'm interested to learn how it works for eye-glass wearers...

I think the P-51B would be a great addition to DCS, as would a razorback version of the P-47. And I'd love to see a P-38J or L in this sim. P-38s saw service in ETO and MTO, and though they were phased out of high altitude escort duties in favor of the Mustang, the 9th AF put them to good use as fighter bombers. Its a big, complicated aircraft by WWII standards though so maybe its a bit more than ED wants to tackle. Still, it's an aircraft like no other.

Do you guys remember how many people watched the F-14 reveal stream? Weren't there something like 9,000+ ppl watching that stream? I would guess most of the people watching that were interested enough in the F-14 to buy it. And probably a number of purchasers were unable to tune in to the stream.

Sometimes I have found weird double mappings the first time I go in to set up a new aircraft purchase - for example, the thrust is mapped both to my throttle AND my rudder pedals. I just go in and clear out the default axis mappings and remap the axes myself, and that fixes it.

Warthog Throttle. New sound and movement. How normal is this?
oboe replied to -0303-'s topic in Thrustmaster
I checked, and my Warthog throttle exhibits the same behavior. I opened the bottom of the throttle per =Panther='s instructions, and examined the movement of the throttle handles past each other closely. I also inspected for screws that may have worked loose, or signs of wear/rubbing between any surfaces. What I did learn is that the mechanism that locks the two throttle handles together consists of a movable pin in one handle, which can be extended into a metal cylinder which is mounted in the other handle. This locks the handles together. I found the metal cylinder is STRONGLY magnetic - and I believe the clicking and slight movement of the stationary handle as one is passed by the other is the result of the attraction between the cylinder and the pin. Does this make sense? Can anyone else confirm? My throttle is #47888, and the larger throttle handle does exhibit a fair amount of looseness between the handle and its rotation axis - but I can't see any loose screws. I may try to shim it with a small piece of cardboard.- 14 replies

I wonder if it could be a Korean Peninsula map? The F-86 and MiG-15 would have a proper Korean War setting, the F4U-1D might fit in here as well? And the upcoming F-16C is appropriate for this theater too.

Fantastic!

I have watched that video many times now, each with dropped jaw - the realism is just amazing. If not for the shadow flicker, I would think it real. However, it doesn't look like 170 deg field of view to me - rather much narrower FoV than that. Can someone explain this? What am I not understanding?

A beauitiful video of retiring Japanese F-4s: What a classic aircraft.

This is a terrible real-life tragedy as an example, but in 1998 an EA-6B Prowler on a training mission in Italy flew into a ski lift cable, cutting it and causing the cable car and occupants to plunge into the mountain side below, killing everyone aboard the car. The Prowler returned to base slightly damaged and made a successful emergency landing. Its hard to imagine how that collision didn't damage the plane more severely. But it did happen. https://www.nytimes.com/1998/02/04/world/20-die-in-italy-as-us-jet-cuts-a-ski-lift-cable.html
