Bottom line : If the Pimax 8k works as advertised, it will be magnitudes better than the current generation headsets. However, for foveated rendering to work, I think it has to be programed into the game. Maybe someone from the ED team can give a update on this ?
-
According to this article, foveated rendering is the finished article. https://uploadvr.com/eye-tracking-important-risky/ Of course this has to be implemented in the Pimax headset, but according to the latest update, this is not seen as a problem by the development team.

I understand your reservation completely. I decided to back the 8k only after the free upgrade with foveated rendering was in sight. It will be the single most important factor to get high frame rates at this resolution. Another point to consider is that the competition seems to be set on incremental upgrades, meaning that you most likely must buy another headset every time you get a new gfx card. The Pimax 8k can be upgraded to 8kx standard, that is to say 4k per eye. So the 8k will last you a long time as opposed to the competition.

Yet, miles better than any slick corporate type with teflon answers.

Don`t think we will get any useful info at this point. It`s still to early. Hopefully Wags and team are getting a early unit, and are able to give info/video on the progress and integration into DCS.

Hopefully we get the option to turn off brainwarp. Once we get foveated rendering and maybe a next gen gfx card, it may be possible.
-
You may be right on that. One thing to take note of is that Pimax has said that their units are upgradeable, a nice selling point worthy of mention in my opinion.
-
No, it has some built in hardware that needs to be replaced. You may also need other cables. I believe the 8k uses HDMI ?
-
As i have said before, i only backed the 8k when it became apparent that we get fove as a free upgrade later. The only solution to getting fast frame-rates with all things mentioned here, is to limit the gpu to render only the things you look at in hi-res. That is to say the real world frame-rates. Note also that the Pimax 8k is promised to be upgradeable to 8kx. The screens are the same. By then there will be no upscaling of the image.
-
You are not about to give up now, are you ? :)
-
The only concern i have is about the image quality. When you add more LED, the colors will look washed out. My Pimax 4k has this issue. Brainwarp makes the screen darker. I hope they manage to adjust the color gamut on the new displays better.

So, give us the obsolete F-111. We need a big, fast bombtruck !

Hesitating not because of the price, but it says stable version 1.5. I have 2.2. Will they be compatible ?

Pimax reply to latest issues: "V5 is the first prototype after the tooling for mass production. It requests lots of tuning works. However, we still decide to bring it to CES to showcase the backers the latest version. We made several changes with v5 before CES. For example, the lenses and the mechanical design of the lenses are both new tooling version. The change may lead to new issues, e.g. the reflections, but the issues will be eliminated and the benefit of the new design will reveal after fine tuning. To reach approximate 30% increase in terms of brightness level, we added 3 more LEDs in the backlight panel from 12 to 15 and increased the LED current supply to the panel as well. As a result, the current supply in other parts decreases and new issues occurs e.g. tracking performance. It's not hard to resolve, the team is working on it. We use valve tracking technology, the tracking performance won't be an issue at all in the final product. After hardware and software fine tuning and all the issues resolved, we plan to ship limited number of testing units to selected backers, and may bring the units to more backers to test via roadshows. The details of the issues and analysis, along with shipping schedule will be updated later this month."

With the above considerations taken in mind, the F-111 might be the best realistic option. It should prove itself popular as the first fast striker in game. Oh, and the Mig-25 would be sweet !
-
Not saying that they are the same. They are similar in that they can fly high, fast and carry a nuclear anti-ship missile.
-
So, what we need is the TU-22M2. If that is impossible, a F-111 to fill the same role.
-
Was thinking of the Tomcat. It is a fleet defense fighter. To really make it shine on a online server it needs to serve in its primary role. To make fun and involving gameplay it needs an opponent that makes a credible treath to a carrier. We are getting a northern map, carriers, what now is needed is a credible adversary to complete the dynamics. The weakness of DCS at the moment is that it is a bit all over the place. Heatblur should focus on completing the dynamics of late Cold War carrier warfare. There is only one piece missing, the adversary.
-
Just trying to figure out if the F-14 in the fleet defense role has any realistic opponent between 85-2000. Maybe only the Russians had a credible opponent. Not sure if 200-250kg warheads on Sea Eagle, Kormoran, RBS-15, are powerful enough.
-
What will the Tornado bring to the table vs the Viggen in terms of carrier attack ? Since Russian aircraft seem to be off the table maybe the Tornado is a credible opponent ?

This all leads to the single thing I'd like to see more than anything else: a CV operating in the radar shadow of the Lofoten mountains. Right next to my home. Enthusiastic though I am, certainly the Iceland AO represents a much more economical terrain in terms of effort and detail. I therefore find that to be a more likely venue for LN's efforts. Never say never. A Iceland map has little replayability as it consists mostly of water= same mission over and over. The mountains in the north of Norway on the other hand, offer a vide range of variation due to the terrain. If Heatblur intends to make a module that is popular, it is one of the better choices.

If this means that they will use the funding to deliver a polished consumer product, I will wait. I will hate it tough. This unit has so much promise.

Thanks for the replies Cypr3r and dburne. I am contemplating a MonsterTech full cockpit including the centre mounted stick, and your information is most useful.

On the Virpil webshop there is the option to get a extension set. Is it possible to screw them all together for a floor mounted stick, and do the wire extensions include that ?
