Definitively with Wormeaten here. Today's systems, Vive/rift, are to marginal for what they cost. Ideally i want to see 140° FOV and eye tracking before i spend the kind of money they want. In the mean time i might buy something cheaper, maybe some Microsoft VR headset or Pimax. There is no reason for discourse here. Todays systems are only a marginal entry into VR and the systems that come the next 1-2 years will blow them out of the water. In latest developments, i am exited to learn that Vive are adding eye-tracking to the HTC. This allows them to increase resolution and FOW, while decreasing demands on the GPU. I think next gen Rift and Vive will be great products.

Speed has a vertical as well as a horizontal component. Thus, when you increase the vertical speed, you can decrease it in the horizontal. This you can do without raising the nose aggressively, loosing neither visibility or fearing tailstrikes. It is my understanding that both the LERX (on F-18 ) and canards work in the same way by allowing for a high sink rate on landing. Can anyone confirm this ?
-
Thanks esb77, from how i understand you: As lift increases the separation of centre of mass and lift causes the nose to pitch down. From before i know that deltas have poor sustained turn rates, you need a greater angle of attack to do the same work. Is this because the elevons has to counteract a aft lift centre as well as the force to turn ? IE, the aft centre act as a leverage on the weight centre counter to your control input ?

Economical yes, if you allow for the fact that independence is worth paying for in the eyes of the Swedes.

The Viggen was made to operate from road bases. not in case of an emergency but full time. When you have thrust reversers you can use them to stop at slow speed on ice, you can park the plane between trees on either side, and then reverse out again. You can not do a go around after the chute has been deployed/failed. Add all the little advantages together and you get an aircraft that can operate more efficiently away from heavy infrastructure than any contemporary design. Otherwise, my post was a bit crass, for that i am sorry.

Yes, i have always admired the SAAB designs, they are marvels of design and economy. buy a foreign engine. Mate it to the the most affordable supersonic wing, and then add the extras you need to meet your design goals. Not the best fighters in the world, but perhaps the most intelligent way to obtain capability for a small independent country.

Thanks Goblin, learned something new today. Back to Rafale vs Eurofighter The main difference between the two is that the Rafale has its canards in the same plane as the wing, thus delaying flow separation for the inner part of the wing, much like a LERX. My private theory has been that the Viggen does the same thing when it lowers its canard flaps. But this also increases lift, so perhaps this is different ?
-
I am not an expert on the topic of canards, but from a more engineering related forum i have followed a discussion on the Rafale vs Eurofighter. the jist of it was that the Rafale's canard is geared towards delaying flow separation at low speed, high AoA, and the Eurofighter being geared towards agility at high speed. This all has to do with how the canard interacts with the airflow over the wing. I myself have assumed the Viggen is more related to the Rafale as they both are required by design to land on a short runway/carrier. So, if the Rafale does it, why not the Viggen ? And also, the Viggen still has positive stability, so how can you say that the lift center is moved forward ?
-
Fly by wire in conjunction with relaxed stability lets you maintain aircraft control at higher AoA, thus reducing approach speed. Now, if you know why the Viggen has canards, perhaps you can tell me how they relate, in function, to the LERX of the F-18 ? Perhaps you can even tell me why the Swedes choose a delta wing, with its inherent drawbacks for a short field fighter ?
-
The F-16 does not have a delta wing. However, it does have fly by wire. If you don't know know how this relates to landing speed and distance, what point is there to argue with you ?
-
Try deploying a drag chute on a road strip in the forests of Sweden. This is a design criteria for the Viggen. The ones i have seen all had trees standing right next to the road. If you don't get it that thrust reversers are a huge asset and safety in this scenario, then you just don't get it.

Introducing the VKB-Sim ‘Modern Combat Grip’ (MCG)

Thanks again dbourne, I am absolutely allergic to tampering with electronics. Disaster in the making ! Wait it is then ! -

Thanks for the heads up dburne, can i assume you need to modify the Warthog grip in some way to use it ? Looks like i am going to wait for the MCG Gunfighter. -

New question. Do you intend to make a version of the Gunfighter that has the MCG as standard ? I am looking at two options here; I already have the Warthog, so either i buy the Gunfighter with Warthog adapter, or a version that has the modern grip as standard. -
LMS for VR is this something ED could implement?
pegon replied to StandingCow's topic in Virtual Reality
Sorry to hear ED is not interested in this technology. What the guy in the video says it that current VR headsets loose image clarity as the image is compressed to compensate for lens refraction. When the lens magnify the image again, you get a larger view of a lower resolution image. My main reason not to buy the current gen VR headsets is related to this. When i look at things at distance, things are blurry and hard to make out. Exactly what he describes in the video. I think a flight sim is the hardest thing to do in VR, as your "bubble of clear view" has to be large to compensate for the speed of a jet fighter. I guess tough, what ED is reluctant about at the moment, is to state that they are supporting a particular tech when the market is in a flux and the future is unsure. Lets just hope that they are looking at this as Nvidia not only promise better image clarity, but also less demands on the GPU. -
Thanks for the heads up on the Pimax, looks like i have to put it behind me. Now to my question, what are your plans for supporting the Microsoft AR/VR platform ? I am looking to buy a VR headset to coincide with the F/A-18 release, hoping to get something with better resolution than Vive/Rift, and a Microsoft supported headset is destined to be a major player.
-
Do you find the HMD system in the SU-27 making the fighter better when you have a VR display ?
-
Interesting tidbit, the ecm pod of the Iraqi F1 effectively thwarted the awg-9's of the Irancats and denied Iran air superiority over Iraq. My guess is that Spain did not use 530F due to budgetary/logistic reasons. Again from vague memory, all E versions were identical in terms of capability.
-
What could be interesting to know is what plans ED has for the Microsoft software VR platform. It will be a major player in the future of VR, and to know what plans ED has for software implementation is something i look forward to. (are they working with pre-release software, do they intend to get developer kits ?)

Sorry, but you are wrong, the 3Glasses will be out this year. The reason you see so many current gen VR sets on ebay, is that they are not what i call threshold systems. Myself, i had the DK2, lived trough the novelty period of 3d. I have tried the CV1, but is just doesn't have the resolution i will spend money on.
-
Oh sorry, my bad. Exocet would be perfect for Hormuz. Still a beautiful plane and a must buy.
-
I really have hope for the 3Glasses. They are a Microsoft AR partner, so has to be seen as a serious contender. As you say it, you have trouble making out targets in the distance with the current offering. Less critical if you fly a helicopter, but in a fast jet it is just to confusing. Really hoping we can get a good VR-set on the market by the time 2,5 and F-18 are out.
-
Really hope the F1 makes it into DCS world. I am a 100% sure buyer of this module. Looking forward to make a exocet strike on the USS Forrestal protected by player F-14's. Surely one of the best looking and iconic fighters ever made.
-
A C-172 is ultimately not interesting to me as it is limited as to what i can do with it. However, if you think low and slow, why not a OV-10 Bronco ?

VKB Gladiator Pro - Quick Review
pegon replied to SVgamer72's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks for the reply. I realise i was posting in the wrong thread:doh: I was thinking of the Gunfighter. Will wait a bit and see what the modern jet grip looks like before i order.
