My comparison of Oculus CV1, Vive, PiMax 4k w/NoloVR
pegon replied to TripRodriguez's topic in Virtual Reality
Just wanted to add my 2 cents on the Pimax. Resolution is definitively better. Rift has better colours. About lenses, my eye distance may be in the fortunate range, so i can get rid of the fish bowl to a certain extent. Overall, current generation VR has great wow/immersion effect, but it wears off after a while for me. Next gen headsets has to offer a leap in terms of performance for me to buy one, but even a flip up visor has real merit. Taking off the headset to find a button on the keyboard or looking at the checklist is cumbersome, so mine is back in the box. I will try it again if they bring a good VR update post 2.1. -
has the trim changed with DCS 2.1 update 1

Got it totally different. Even when i trim nose full down, it climbs. -

So, we all know ED has bitten over to much. That is why i applaud the transfer of F-18 development to 3-rd party. VR got the short end of the stick in terms of 2.1 lighting engine. No surprise there, VR is the new kid on the block. It looks gorgeous on monitor, so good job with that. I expect ED will now give full focus on the VR part of 2.1, as it will go into 2.5 core. We are getting a gamma slider, however, there are issues that pertain to the tuning of the engine itself. Say in a low sun condition, when the brightness between hud, cockpit and outside simply is wrong. Getting it right will require time. I just hope ED keeps full focus on the core product and timelines.

So, what's the lowdown, you know, the WORD ?

Another vote for the F-111. Not only is it interesting in its own right, it brings something new to the table in terms of gameplay.

I know how you feel. i was going to sit trough the whole 1. gen sets. From before i have had a ancient Emagin VR set, as well as the DK2. Finally i have given in and got the Pimax 4K. It is great for the feeling of flight, but i have decided to delay my transition into complex modern cockpits (i come from wwII fighters) because of the visual limitations of current gen resolution. I think gen 2 will come faster than Oculus predicts. Samsung that supplies displays to both Rift and Vive has just made public a display with 2,024 x 2,200 pixels. Combine that with eye tracking, and you have a markedly better image clarity, while the eye tracking gives you better framerates than what we have today. I think the headset i describe above will be a magnitude better for VR than anything that exist today. Also keep in mind that i only use VR for flight sims. They are the most demanding in terms of hardware than anything else (just look at your monitor and GFX card; Are they budget models, or high end ?) So, if you intend to use it on other things than flight sims, you may still get value today.

Overall good post and i agree with everything you say. There is nothing else that gives the feeling of flight like VR. However, current systems are to limited in display resolution. If you wait another year, you will have a unit with much better resolution, foveated rendering and perhaps better FOV. Todays systems was a good buy 1 year ago, but today i think its better to wait.

Sorry to say i don't know this either. I use a Mac for all other things than games, so my software knowledge is little. But on the bright side of this. With no trouble and little adjustment i set up the Pimax and got it working with good performance and only basic understanding of technicals. From other forums i have learned that Pimax software has come a long way since release and this has been my experience with DCS. Haven't tried other games.

I use the standard settings you get when you use the VR settings, not sure what that is. Performance has been good, so have spent little time with settings. Have pixel density at 1.3 however. The focal point of the Pimax is infinity, so overall with the better resolution, i think it is better at distance. However, it is more than 6 months since i tried the CV1, so not claiming this as gospel truth.

Intel Core i76700K, 32GB DDR4, 512GB PCIe SSD + 2TB HDD, GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Never tried any overdrive. Image is butter smooth at 60fps, so no need. The image was scaled down from 4k on first try, so i think so. What is atw ? Tracking is the usual gyroscope type. Use numpad 5. Will get the NoloVR i think.

Hi Brewnix, Have not tried any monitoring program. However i can give you some observations. When i fly high i get solid 60fps. Down in the valleys 60fps. However, if the valley has trees or if i fly low over Vegas, i get solid 30fps. It seems to me that the bottleneck is how the CPU/GPU, renders objects, not the Pimax itself. If you get the same with CV1 you may not get any benefit from the Pimax. Also i wonder; Does anyone know if i need to run the Steam VR software in DCS ? It currently loads automatically and i wonder if i get better framerates without it. (Having the Pimax up and running without snags, makes me apprehensive about changing anything)

My experience with Pimax so far : I downloaded Pimax software, installed it and the Steam VR client. DCS has been working flawlessly from the beginning, and it is safe to say that the Pimax software has come to maturity Image : The display resolution is clearly better in Pimax compared to CV1. However, colours are better in CV1. When it comes to ghosting the Pimax has little of this when the framerate stays on 60hz. However, when you are in areas where many objects are rendered, you will have some ghosting. This is however not related to the display refresh rate, but the speed at witch your CPU/GPU renders objects. Overall i rate the display as better than the CV1. Head tracking : As you may know Pimax has only 3DOF, in addition to this, i am experiencing drifting. So in this respect the CV1 is clearly better. Overall, i am pleased with the Pimax. It has gotten me into the VR experience at lesser cost than the alternatives. However, my overall view remains. Current gen VR headsets offer only the minimum entry point for VR. I can not wait for the day when we have substantially better resolution and FOW.

Readability is fine, i compare the Pimax to a monitor with high colour saturation. There is ghosting around Las Vegas, where i get 30fps. However, when i get 50-60, it's ok. My GFX card is 1080 GTX.

Just got the Pimax. It works plug and play with DCS. First impression, instruments are more legible than CV1. However, compared to my fancy 4k monitor, colours look flaccid. Will come back with more on the weekend.

Ok, so we have it down then, we all want the best VR device. I have the following criteria : Price : I expect to buy a new VR device within 12 months, so i don't want to spend a fortune on a intermediate solution. Resolution : After trying CV1 i was back and forth a bit, but decided to hold off for a while. I hope Pimax is better FPS: Pimax has only 60 fps, will this result in stutter when you move your head ? I don't know, time will tell. I have little motion sickness in real life, and none in VR, so not to worried. 6DOF : This is of course great to have, but i only intend to use the Pimax in DCS, so it is not critical. If the Pimax seems ok, i will buy a stand alone 6DOF tracker for it in a few months. If not, there is a better product on the market, or it is simply not worth spending more money on. All in all, i will try to offer objective feedback on it. BTW, i described the intense feeling of immersion on my first VR headset as follows : "Like an Eagle, Leering at the sky trough a Keyhole"

So, i have had 2 VR headsets before. The first one i can not remember what it was called, but it was back in the time when the FW190 was a new thing in IL2. I tried it twice, then disposed of it. The next was the DK2. It was also disposed of when i moved 9 months ago. I have tried the CV1 and found that i would not spend the money based on previous experience. The point of this tread is to discuss alternatives to Rift and Vive. Have you ever tried an alternative, and if you have, can you give some objective feedback ?
-
Tell me, what would you choose for a online dogfight, CV1 or a 4k monitor ? Might i imply that the CV1 price comes on top of the price of a fancy monitor ? VR is now in its infancy. Remember when we had "desktop replacement" laptops ? They were very expensive, and still you could get something twice as fast and half the weight 12 months later. If you are willing to go trough all the generations of VR, paying top money each time for something that quite isn't good enough, then by all means do. But it will be expensive. I guess the headset we want is still 3-5 years out. In the mean time i will do the "el cheapo"
-
I agree that Vive and Rift have overall better features. But you say it yourself dbourne. By the time next gen VR comes, this gen will end up in the dustbin for those of us that are early adopters. No one of them offer what we want ! I figured out long ago that if you buy last years best CPU and GPU, you can have overall better performance from your PC by changing components more often. To understand my opinion, you just have to ask yourself ; Will i buy a new VR headset as soon as something better comes to market ?

Thanks for this. I am looking forward to see if the instruments are clearer in the Pimax. Perhaps the one area where it may be better than the competition.

One thing i want to mention regarding development of VR games. Your periferal vision acts just like a radar in the sense that it has an acute sense of movement. What your eyes actually do when you scan for a moving target, is that your periferal vision detects movement. Then your focus shifts to the spot where movement vas detected. If you fail to focus your eye will overshoot, again putting your target in periferal view. Your eye will do this over and over until the target is locked in focus. As you know, finding a target in VR is the hardest thing to do. You have a limited field of view, and currently, you have only the number of pixels of an aircraft to identify it. I think ED has to look more closely into how the eye actually works in order to develop a method to display aircraft that compensates your lack of periferal view.

Will do, but shipping from China to Norway is given at 2 weeks to a month, so nothing soon.
-
Just bit the bullet and ordered a Pimax. Not what i want, but i can justify the cost even if it is worthless in a years time.
-
Not talking price here, i am willing to pay $1000 for a device that has better field of view and resolution. Rift and Vive may have been worth the price a year ago, but now, NO ! And when you say you need a supercomputer to run 4k, you should look at the latest tech like foveated rendering.

I was referring to the Acer and HP VR headsets recently announced at around $300. These are not really any better than Rift or Vive, so i still may skip them, even for the price. What i really want is 140' FOW and better resolution/image quality. So for me, i think that i will drop anything i get before that in the bin, and that makes it hard for me to justify the price.
