Multi-monitor set-up guide & help (unofficial)
smallberries replied to MadTommy's topic in Multi-Display Bugs
So, I have 2 lilliputs for MFDs, and a single monitor. I was playing some other games for a while, and was leaving my lilliputs turned off to take it easy on my old graphics card, and just playing DCS without MFD output. I just tried turning them back on and playing with them in DCS, and no-go, DCS wasn't recognizing them (Windows does just fine). So I presumed that in one of the latest updates, something got scrubbed. So I have re-edited my monitor luas, and DCS refused to recognize an edited lua either in the game directory, or in the saved game directories. In fact, in an attempt to force DCS to recognize an edited lua, I deleted all the unused stock monitor config luas, and now the drop-down in the settings menu displays no options ;) So, since I haven't seen any threads about loss of MFD export capability, I assume I have an unusual situation. UltraMFCD does work for me, but I can't size the output to my liking, and was hoping to recover my earlier ability to directly export to the size I prefer. Any ideas? I am running a 2560x1440 main display with the 2 lilliputs underneath it. If anyone has the appropriate luas at hand, or anything similiar, I wouldn't mind trying a straight copy/paste, although I doubt my DCS is going to accept them. I tried manually editing options.lua to accept the monitor configs but DCS laughed at my feeble attempt. p.s. I used Notepad++ P.P.S. fixed it, total screen size in the game settings menu had reverted, and changes to options.lua didn't stick unless modified in-game. I guess DCS wouldn't recognize any modified lua that had what appeared to be, or was, a syntactic mistake. Or in this case, absolute x/y coords that were out of bounds of the screen size. -
Also, it would be nice (i.e. much quicker) if you could clear a field by selecting it and pressing delete, instead of having to click on the field and then subsequently click on a delete button. And if certain commands (can't think an example off the top of my head) didn't decide for you that your device cannot be used for them...for no reason? And having an "All" command list, and "Search" command list, is redundant. A search field can be available irregardless of the list you are on. And....nevermind :P

You will regret it. They are awful. j/k :) -
Upgrade from x52 to Warthog - worth it?

Personally, I'd suggest going VKB. -
Tbh I find the input lag on the Gazelle to be a killer. Mine gathers dust. I don't know if it's just the FM, or the gyros or what have you, but it feels like a full half second from cyclic input to response. When the helo responds, it moves quickly, which makes reaction difficult, because again the response is awful. Moreso than the other helicopters, you must fly by anticipation rather than feel. While you have to know to some extent what input you should have beforehand for all the helicopters, you can feel the others better. If you are flying reactively, by feel, with the Gazelle, you are doomed. At least if feels that way to me. The only saving grace, and I'm not sure if it's natural or contrived, is that the Gazelle is rock solid if you hold a given position. It flies on rails. I'm sure the AP has something to do with that, but I'm surprised there isn't more minor oscillation. I much prefer the Huey and Mi-8. I wanted the Gazelle to be a nimble helo, but it actually feels like an occasionally spastic whale. A spastic whale that can fly upside down. Is it supposed to be able to do that?

DCS Huey accuracy test from a military pilot
smallberries replied to StandingCow's topic in DCS: UH-1H
Yeah, what a treat. For a non-pilot, this opens up a lot of understanding and appreciation, and hope the model will get even tighter. -

DCS: F-14A/A+/B by Heatblur Simulations coming to DCS World!

Are you kidding? I'm looking forward to sitting in the back seat, sipping my latte, and letting my pilot do all the work. -
27' monitor / TN or IPS ?
smallberries replied to peplum's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have an ASUS ROG PG278Q and am very happy with it (27" IPS). When I did my research it seemed the majority opinion leaned towards IPS. Sure, when I first bought the monitor I checked for blacklight glow, and there is some in the corner, but in practice I never, ever, notice it. Good luck whatever you choose! -
P.S. To clarify, the torrents finished downloading each time and there just wasn't enough room to unpack, which makes the constant re-downloading curious to me.
-
It's not clear where to post bug reports, so hopefully this is the right place. Running the 2.6.22.24 installer, it kept downloading the latest update over and over. When it went to unpack the files, it stalled, then restarted the download from the beginning. Googling the issue lead me to believe it was an antivirus related problem, so I uninstalled my firewall, and my AV software, and turned off MS Security Essentials. Same problem persisted. I finally found the log and realized it was a disk space shortage. At no point did the updater actually report a shortage of disk space, outside of the log file, and I don't think repeated attempts to download what has already been downloaded is an appropriate response to a lack of disk space. Just passing this on.

A-10C rolling with engines idle on start up.
smallberries replied to Ocelotunit's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Any chance with the update you have some axes bound where they shouldn't be? 'Cuz that get's me, everytime... -
I think the advice to pause when the text comes up is brilliant, in the why didn't I think of that kind of way. The easiest thing for DCS to do, which would provide the best functionality, is to add a little scroll bar so that all text can be re-read at the pilot's leisure. It wouldn't be a lot of coding, and the text could fade to de-clutter the display, but with a cursor pass-over it could be made to reappear and scrolled through at will. Here's hoping someone at ED finds the time to do this, one of these patches. Now, where can I post my gripes about the keybinding interface :P

I would love any heavy helicopter. I love my Mi-8, and realize I have a real fetish for big choppers. I lean towards either the Sea King or Chinook for the time periods and application, although there's nothing I don't love about the Super Stallion, either! may I point out this bad boy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_CH-124_Sea_King

Chinook or Super Stallion!

Also, check that you don't have axes bound to multiple devices. DCS loves to auto-assign those axes and keybinds. Check your callibration (Ctrl-Enter to see your stick positions), the KA is actually ridiculously stable with the channels activated. Yes, many of the tutorials are incomplete, and painful to endure. There is no ability to control the pacing, no way to go back to a part in the middle or to get something just said repeated. You just have to put in your time. The stock campaigns can be helpful, Chuck's guides, and youtube.

Just got my gunfighter base for my WH grip. Took a number of different setups to try to get the right amount of centering (for helo trim) while keeping the action light. All I can say is what a difference already. After not sleeping for 36 hours, and having not played DCS much for a few weeks, and being a relative noob to begin with, my Huey flying is categorically smoother right off. Practicing oil rig landing, my approaches are still wrong, but when I finally got over the pad I had no problems sticking it dead center and gentle. When I'm not half-dead, tomorrow, I expect glory. I ended up using both #30 cams for the stronger center deten. The WH cam, and the stock cam, just didn't convince me that I would get dead-center so that post trim I could return to controlling my choppers unless I added stiffer springs to the point that too much muscles was necessary around the perpiphery. After trying different springs went back to the stock #20 springs and the #30 cams, but added an additional #10 spring to the Y axis. I might take that off tomorrow. The return to center is perfect but the Y axis effort is a touch heavier than I want. I'd rather keep the control and have to put a little more thought into post trim centering. The neatest thing was straight and level flight in the Huey didn't have the wobble at all, I suppose it was natural to make the little corrections to avoid that. How nice is that? Thanks VKB! P.S. quality, packaging, all top notch. No problems installing the adapter in the WH grip, which I was a little scared of. Also was mildly skeptical of replacing that solid metal threaded adapter with the molded one, but it feels just fine, actually. No problems with the software, only sadness is DCS recognizes it as a VKB device now, so I have to redo all my controls :P P.P.S Stick LED is solid red, other LED is blue, but works perfectly in terms of registering buttons/axes. P.P.P.S. I'm red colour-blind, so perhaps that's a solid green on the stick, although I'm pretty sure it's red.

yet another question of rudder pedals.
smallberries replied to marques's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I just ordered Crosswinds. The biggest reason for me, over Slaw (I did prefer the all metal construction) was I needed the Crosswinds' more horizontal pedals, rather than the Slaw's more vertical design, because I have a small space to work with and can't stretch out my legs very far. -

OMG. Ban me from the forums, there is a 2-pos on/off keybind. I could just die. -
How to set up toggle switches (a tutorial)
smallberries replied to Spy Guy's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Very nice, thanks! edit: doh! copied it in and got no love :( still requires double flick, off position doesn't do anything. P.S. changed the name of the keybind in the savedgames throttle.diff.lua to the new bind and now I'm wondering if the key can be assigned to both named commands to make it work? -
How to set up toggle switches (a tutorial)
smallberries replied to Spy Guy's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Unfortunately, no dice. Also tried simply removing the values altogether, as it should work like a keypress (?) but also no-go. P.S. Is it sufficient to quit the mission for control mods like monitor mods, or do we need to quit DCS altogether? Nvm I think I answered that one :P Quitting altogether is necessary for control mods, but not monitor mods apparently. -
How to set up toggle switches (a tutorial)
smallberries replied to Spy Guy's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Can someone tell me why this doesn't work? I'm trying to use the EAC switch on my WH Throttle to switch the helmet-mounted system toggle on/off without double flicking. Based on this thread I have tried this line in the Throttle-HOTAS Warthog.lua in the KA-50\input\joystick\throttle folder: {down = iCommandPlaneModeHelmet, up = iCommandPlaneModeHelmet, value_down = 1.0, value_up = 1.0, name = _("Helmet-mounted system On/Off"), category = _("Ins Targeting Mode Controls Panel PVR"), }, but the down position is still not turning the display off... I see that I do not have device numbers like some other examples. I just don't know where to find them, none of the .lua I have looked at have anything comparable to imitate, with the exception of the kneeboards, there are no device IDs...? -
Introducing the VKB-Sim ‘Modern Combat Grip’ (MCG)
smallberries replied to rrohde's topic in VKB-SIM Flight Gear
My question is can you swap the PCB and joysticks from the MCG into a higher quality Virgil grip? That would be just about perfection.....
