So I’ve been spending more time in the RIO seat with a human pilot and am decent in it but I don’t feel efficient. So what are your usual effective techniques? For instance, how do you usually set your elevation with the knob, then fine tune with the stick? How do you know where to set it initially? What numbers do you usually go for? When you set up TWS, how do you keep your centroids constant? Any thoughts or tricks on this or anything else would be appreciated. Just want to hone my skills. Thanks! v6, boNes

It's supposed to be free trial since March 28 and still it is not free on Steam. The JF-17 was in free trial on time, why not the Harrier? The trial ends today, that's not enough time to check it out even if they did put it on Steam! v6, boNes

Can someone fix this please....it's so annoying I can't see my performance stats AND on top of that it boots me back to the main menu where I have to go choose the missions all over again. Thanks! v6, boNes -
Thanks! Question..playing around with VoiceAttack and foudn that if I hit new command or edit command it pops up a window to do just that. But there is no way to close the window. No X in the upper right corner, no cancel button. The window is there and no way to access its other windows. I can't even close the program except via crtl alt del. ANyone know how to close this? IT's really annoying Thanks! v6, boNes

Lighting the burners would make me an easier target for IR missiles though...when should that be done? v6, boNes

Lots of great tips guys, thanks. Especially the Grim Reapers one...I won't sluff them off but I will take what they are saying with a grain of salt. Seems to me that the primary issue is being too low on speed to do the maneuver. I also found that although I know about the Tomcat and AOA and using the rudders, and not pulling back so hard on the stick, my problem is that to me it's a perishable skill. If I'm away flying a Hornet or something, then come back to the Tomcat, it's hard to remember to not pull so much on the stick and to smooth things out. In light of that--when you are in the pull back stage of the split-S, does it seem like she just wants to crawl back up to straight and level? I can't pull too much harder to get her up there sooner as backpressure does nothing at that point. Is it like that with anyone else or with other aircraft (maybe, I can't remember). Also, so let's say you've dodged some missiles and now you are out of energy...what would you do next? v6, boNes
-
Ah, that could be it...running on low speed. When I'm practicing I'm purposely letting them sling missiles at me so it's maenuver after maneuver after maneuver. Although sometimes when I am doing the split S, I cannot complete the split s. I'm headed straight for the ground and am barely able to pull up m ost of the time. Hmm... v6, boNes

I have VoiceAttack but haven't set it up yet. Would you mind sharing your profile? v6, boNes

So I’m practicing IR missile defense per Grim Reapers’.youtube video. I get the concept and the maneuvers, but the Tomcat doesn’t exactly turn on a dime unless the wings are swept back and you have a lot of energy. With wings forward, she rolls slow the. Runs out of energy so that if you are say split s’ing to finish the defense against a rear quarter show, she has no energy to complete the maneuver. Especially since you are in idle. So how do you get her to roll faster and still have energy to finish the maneuver? Pure bacjstock and all rudder? Seems like if I roll her too fast, she doesn’t want to respond anymore, or she roll reverses. Thanks! v6, boNes

Thanks I'll check it out. v6, boNes

Is there a way to tell Jester to slew the radar left or right? If I'm turning to intercept and the bogey falls outside of the scan cone as shown in the TID, he doesn't slew the radar over and I lose him (whether in ground or a/c stab). Sucks for my intercept. Thanks! v6, boNes

In the Grim Reapers video they specifically address the landing flaps as opposed to maneuvering flaps and use it to great success for instance against the (3) F-16s (although really it wasn't 1V3 is you think about it since one of the F-16s went into the ground early in the engagement). v6, boNes

You won't be able to save a trackfile since the popup window blocks the option to hit the button then kicks you back to the main menu. so look for the "last track" file and send that instead, if it even exists. v6, boNes -
Yes I was talking specifically about US Navy and USAF flights. Not sure what you refer to about tail numbers for the Navy though. The tail number in the USN is normally the last two digits of the nose MODEX number. ie, a Hornet whose number on the nose is 201 will have 01 on the tail normally whereas in the USAF the tail number is the airframe manufacture year ("AF96") and an alpha code for their base ("HO" Holloman) and I think a numeric for their wing/squadron. At least the USN isn't using their BuNo which is pretty much the equivalent of the USAF tail number but is a 6 digit number normally such as 163894 and is usually located on the engine nacelle by the nozzle. But in any case, on the radio they wouldn't say Lion 01 they would say Lion 201. Maybe they only do the Navy style callsigns when, like what oyu were saying, if it is an all-Navy comm. Such was the case in the Gulf of Sidra incidents, so there was no need for Dodge 11 but rather Fast Eagle 107 and Gypsy 202 or whatever. Hmmm. v6, boNes

So a flight gets a callsign from the ATO or frag, say, Springfield 11. But in the Navy there is also the squadron callsign, say for VF-103 with a 103 MODEX it is Victory 103, or if you are flight lead Victory 1. So, when are these callsigns used? When would a flight call on the radio Springfield 11 and when would they say Victory 103? Listening to cockpit audio of the Gulf of Sidra II incident of 1989, VF-32 makes calls as Gypsy 107 while in 1981 VF-41 makes them as Fast Eagle. But nothing like Hammer 11, Colt 32, etc etc. Anyone know how it's done? v6, boNes

I used to covet this book in the 80s, but my jr high/high school budget couldn't afford it which was like $40 for the hardcover and Kroch and Brentano's at the time. But then a few years later they had a soft cover version of it for $20 so I finally got to buy it and the problem with it was being paperback, my drool on it could wrinkle the pages. As it went out of print, the hardcover version became affordable too, so I bought that also. Loved it ever since and Heater was my real life hero back then. I was so excited when Desert Shield started and there was a picture of a VF-21 Tomcat on the deck of the TR that had Heater's name on the canopy rail. I was like, woohoo! a Top Gun instructor is in theatre! Still love to look at those photos. Another great book from that time is "Top Gun: The US Navy's Fighter Weapons School" by George Hall. Another great journalist and photographer (RIP, George). More recent books of this type that you must check out for the F-14 are "Tomcat! The Grumman F-14 Story" by Admiral Gilcrist, "Bye-Bye, Baby...!" by Dave Parsons, George Hall, Bob Lawson and "Anytime, Baby..." by Erik Hildebrant. All have great photos and anecdotes. v6, boNes

This was brought up before (can't find it with a search though) but when you have a target locked both as L&S and in STT, the target aspect "stick" on the target icon in the radar screen disappears. The only way to get target aspect is to look at it in your HUD on the NIRD circle. Which is a good workaround for now, but what if you lose your HUD? Or what if you don't want to STT track them and alert them to your presence? When this was posted the last time, it was requested to have track files and people posted with track files, but nothing came of it that I can see...even in 2.5.6 there still is no TA stick on the target icon. What's the latest on this? Thanks! v6, boNes
