1:500000 printable DCS/FC2.0 Tactical Chart (WIP)
JimMack replied to igormk's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
That is an idea, but I do not think it is practable for planning a mission across the whole area, as you need one sheet to cover the whole area, in order to get your course headings, distance run etc correct. I have I think is a very rare document. It is a map that was used by UK bomber command on raids on Germany in the 2nd WW. It enabled the navigator to track his position on a kneepad without having to open the whole map, but just change the leaves of the map. It is very difficult to explain how it was done, unless you have the map in your hands. It was an exercise in Origami! For an explanation see: http://oldmaps.free.fr/oil/foldsys.htm To print, cut and glue such maps required special manufacturing equipment, which seems to have disappeared from the market since 1950. However I am looking! I wonder why such a good idea disappeared. Using maps a lot, it certainly beats opening the whole map and re-folding to find the area of interest! -

As igormk has said, please keep posting your ideas for map features until he returns. In the meantime I am exploring the various options for printing these maps in volume, to get the lowest price for the community. Unfortunately the map print size of 1500mm x 1100mm for the DCS/FC2 area, at a recognised aeronautical scale of 1:500,000, is not a standard print size, and is in fact larger than A0 or B0. This means Litho printing on an oversize paper roll and then cutting, which increases costs. Options I am exploring are:- Folded and laminated. (laminated so you can create flight plans with water-soluable pens and then erase) Unfolded and laminated (user has to fold) Unfolded and not laminated (user has to apply a self adhesive film - can be purchased from most craft shops - and folds). Printing at A0, which will give a scale of 1:600,000. Loses a bit of detail and is non aeronautical map standard - but will give 1cm = 6kms, instead of 5Kms. If anyone is in the print industry and has any better ideas - please pm me! -
Available on Ebay, and the various country Amazons

Please note - delivery of the Flaming Cliffs manual is on hold. We have no stock left. We will be printing FC2 manual, but regret that delay could be a month.

Best editing workflow… need some advice

The critical issue seems not to be necessarily the number of units, but the number of units firing within a particluar time period. If the mission starts with every unit firing at each other simultaneously you can get a crash. -
Which particular videos are you referring too?

In COIN operations, such as Afghanistan, helos (such as Apache) are most feared by the Taliban. Advantage - more accurate than fixed wing, even A-10C Disadvantage - Helos need to be close to target area when called for, due to slower speed than fixed wing.

If you test, you will find that the dispersion is the standard egg (more correctly ellipse) shape. Correct - the longer the range, the larger the size of the ellipse. -

We were thinking of 140 cms x 110 cms, which gives a scale of 1cm = 5km. Map should be folded as all maps are folded - both land and aero. -

Ouch - that is $140! We must find a cheaper printer - we are researching! -
Yes we are getting close. Last 48 hours testing with a break of 2 hours to watch F1 and 6 hours to have a kip. With all the new avionic and missile Ai, etc etc, this is a non-trivial task compared to testing the latest console game which a kid can do in 4 hours!

Hi Nate - that's a good idea. I'll contact Igormk to explore options. -

Congratulations - a great idea. I have checked printing prices in the UK. An A0 size, laminated will cost £27 for a one off. -
I would say that what will be modelled are small bushes about waist high. I think grass really is not necessary. I remember from when I first learnt to glide, that my height cue on landing was when I could differentiate the blades of grass on the field, and that meant I was about to touch down.

I am sure that special forces are taught how to survive in most regimes, European, jungle and desert. There have many published reports on the SAS entry course, and one of the elements is survival for I think at lease 3 days, and if you are caught scrounging food from the local population you get RTU'd. Even in 1967, as a junior RN officer, I was sent on a 5 day course in Malaya on how to survive in the jungle, what plants to eat, where you could find water, how to catch snakes and cook them, what grubs you could eat etc etc. Training must have got a lot more sophisticated in the last 40 years!

Actually, in "Danger Close Conditions" (enemy within 300 yards), even smart bombs can have too big a blast area, and do not always go exactly where they are meant to. Experience in Afghanistan (and Iraq) has shown the most accurate weapon in danger close conditions is the cannon, hence troops call for either A-10 or Apache if they are available.

In case anyone has not bought the boxed version of DCS:Black Shark in the UK, PC World is now stocking it.
-
Yes - that is the one:- you can now start some learning on the systems for DCS:A-10C!

Unfortunately this clip only shows the first half of the documentary on the A-10C. If you can view Discovery channel, or buy the DVD, the second half is much more interesting. It shows the simulator and explains some of the new functions on the MFDs, sensor pod etc.

I agree. If you go on Friday visit the American Air Museum, Imperial War museum, TFC (hanger 2), etc. Also - Friday is used by the display pilots for practising.

It will be intersting to see if Tomcatz's Afghan group works. You have his files in the official modders thread.

I have received a message from ED that new objects can be introduced into DCS without replacing existing models: "You can create any new article for Encyclopedia. Look at BlackShark\data\scripts\Enc directory. It has small readme.txt file. Images located in directory BlackShark\data\images\Encyclopedia Feel free to add new entries in any subdirectory of directories mentioned above". Has anyone tested this?

OK - Try http://www.kengray.co.uk/lockonbuy.htm for boxed version
