haven’t heard of these release dates before. how reliable are your sources?

Very strange GPU and CPU usage.
etherbattx replied to ElCuco68's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Very strange GPU and CPU usage. how much faster is it to load dcs? does it save 10 seconds? 2 seconds? we switched to a nvme ssd drive at work. no dcs installed on that machine, but the windows boot times were only 1-2 seconds faster. -
What type of SSD should I get?
etherbattx replied to ElCuco68's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
What type of SSD should I get? i understand it’s theoretically faster, but what i am trying to understand is if there is any noticeable benefit in dcs. i’m thinking there is not enough sustained i/o for it be noticeable. but interested in some actual timings to know for sure. has anyone done an actual test? -

What type of SSD should I get? oops, i wasn’t clear. i meant to ask how much faster are the load times are with m.2 nvme over the old (non-m.2) sata ssd which everything else being equal. any timings? i wouldn’t expect much change for a work load like dcs, but i am very interested to hear from anyone who has tried and measured it. -

there is always something better coming sometime soon’ish or maybe later. buy the rift and enjoy it. you only live once. if they do come out with a new model next year or year after, you can ebay the one you have and get a bunch of your money back.

35-45% improvement seems a little high. lol. i’d be surprised to even see 20% in the real world with real games.

i agree on the graphics realism but i don’t understand how it helps the mechanics (physics?). how does that work?

Does DCS World benefit from more than 16GB Ram?
etherbattx replied to StefVR's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
how are you measuring ram usage? committed? working set? private bytes? -
it’s interesting that WC was able to get the same physical memory location each time. that almost never happens on a virtual memory system.

upgrade intel i7 4790k to Intel i7-7820X
etherbattx replied to Lenux's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
upgrade intel i7 4790k to Intel i7-7820X if you do it, please post the before and after stats. i think a lot of us would be interested in how much (5%, 10%, more?) of an improvement there is. -
ASW is there to help machines that can’t maintain the proper frame rate. if your machine doesn’t need help, you can turn it off... then again, if your machine doesn’t need help, it will never kick in in the first place. so it doesn’t hurt to leave it on.

Does Hyperthreading reduce DCS performance?
etherbattx replied to jetsimace's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
definitely. but it only works when the software is designed to leverage it. and we are still waiting for games/sims that can utilize 4 cores. it’s not easy. -
i run a rift with a 1070. it works fine. you just need to reduce your Ultra Mega settings to something reasonable
-
how did this work out? save 20% on the load times?
-
are there sone benefits to Vulcan, but it’s highly unlikely to be THE silver bullet some of us expect it to be.
-
any particular reason? you’d be blazing a pretty new trail. not too many gamers going that direction. even less mature than the Z370 route.

Does Hyperthreading reduce DCS performance?
etherbattx replied to jetsimace's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
HT’s are not invisible to the OS. the opposite in fact. the OS has a very detailed, very clear understanding of what they are and how to use them. also, don’t forget that intel designed these cpu’s to compute large recurring workloads. and many of the ‘features’ mentioned here are focused on that type of work, not gaming. for gaming, your best option is 2-4 cores with the highest clock speed you can get ($$ or overclocking, or even better - both). -
Vulkan API good ideas and good analysis. please send this to the developers.

Does Hyperthreading reduce DCS performance?
etherbattx replied to jetsimace's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Does Hyperthreading reduce DCS performance? let’s not get confused. you only have a few physical cores that can do actual work. pretending there is twice as many (HT) almost never results in better performance. if it did, we could all just pretend there is 100 of them and run mega settings with mega detail at 140fps -
Does Hyperthreading reduce DCS performance?
etherbattx replied to jetsimace's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Does Hyperthreading reduce DCS performance? HT is only useful on some compute tasks. intel added it for servers doing batch work loads. games, and in general, don’t have those types of tasks. so HT will probably not improve your fps. it depends on the structure of the task and whether the virtual thread can utilize the same cache as the physical thread and make use of a shared bus. also, if you overclock your cpu, you can achieve higher OC’s by turning HT off. since most games need more Ghz, instead of more threads, there is an advantage in turning HT off and OC’ing your cpu. -
are you dual booting?

i tried using the betas for a few months, but eventually went back to the regular releases. i’m not as young as i used to be
