watts = amps x voltage if you add 0.3 volts to overclock your cpu, how much does the watts increase?

Looking for advice on new build
etherbattx replied to Pricer27421's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
assuming you have a newish ssd from the last 2 years or so, i wouldn’t worry about the pagefile or where it’s located. in a blind test, you will not notice any difference between having a pagefile or not having a pagefile. and it’s the same with the pagefile location. you will not notice any difference between the pagefile being on the boot drive or on a 2nd ssd drive. -
What gaming PC should I buy? for half that, yes. definitely. for the full price? probably not.

Does RAM speed matter?
etherbattx replied to WelshZeCorgi's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
agreed. but in this real life situation, increasing the ram speed over 30%, provided very little benefit. which makes me doubt some of the dubious claims about ram speed having a large effect on performance. -
Upgrading from Intel 3930K to 9900K. Worth it?
etherbattx replied to obious's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Upgrading from Intel 3930K to 9900K. Worth it? keep in mind that any disk access period will result in page faults. even with 64GB of ram, if you load a file into notepad you will get hundreds of page faults. load the file again and you will get hundreds more. it’s the way virtual memory works. it doesn’t necessary mean anything is wrong. there is also the difference between hard faults and soft faults but i’m not going to get into that here. also keep in mind that task manager doesn’t distinguish between problem faults and no problem faults, so it’s not a good indicator of an issue. why are you worried about the page file and page faults, anyway? you can’t change how Windows works. -

ED may have added their own memory manager to reuse object memory for one object, for another object, but that would be within their own process. the DCS process itself, is a standard windows process and lives or dies by the rules of the operating system. you can’t escape it. one of the primary jobs of an OS is encapsulation and isolation. there seems to be a lot of misconceptions in these threads. for those who want to know more i would urge you to read some of articles on MSDN and virtual memory operating systems in general. things have come a long ways since Windows 3.1 and classic Mac OS -
Does RAM speed matter?

the math is a bit weird. you increased ram speed by 33% but only gained 2fps when you experience a graphics drop during the highest loads? isn’t that when the extra ram speed is supposed to come into play? what am i missing? -

DCS is asking “windows” for memory and it gets it. it’s the “windows” operating system that decides the best way to manage ram and the page file and everything else going on in your computer. that is what the job of an “operating system” is. to balance and manage and secure resources. there is nothing DCS can do about it. -

Does RAM speed matter? yes, it is.... but not when you drive it. there is a difference between theory and practice :) -

for benchmarks designed to test speed, yes you can get faster performance with faster ram, but in real life? with real applications and games i have seen very little to no noticeable perf increase. it’s like buying a car that can go 300km/h instead of 200km/h. is it faster? yes. is it faster when you drive it? probably not. -
the 1070 works surprisingly well for VR. it might actually be the best value option around when comparing price/performance

Possible New Valve VR Heaset bleeding edge is named that for a reason. you have to expect a few issues if it was a regular boring commodity, your mom would be buying it from Walmart.

Interesting findings on new VR setup wow! that’s a LOT of hardware! i would have thought you’d get more than 23 fps

Upgrading from Intel 3930K to 9900K. Worth it?

keep in mind that every disk access is a page fault. so even an editor or tool that reads txt files will generate a bunch of them. so i wouldn’t focus on that as a problem area in DCS. -
Win 10 + How do I switch or minimize DCS
etherbattx replied to SnowTiger's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
is this maybe a DCS issue? i have not had any problems switching in to or out of full screen with other titles. -
Any experience with Samsung Odyssey Plus & DCS yet?

globalization and easy access for all is still a work in progress. hang in there. -
Surprised there are no threads on AMDs Zen...

whoa! thats the first time i’ve heard that. and not my experience for sure. can anyone else confirm? -
Upgrading from HDD to SSD. Is it worth it? the fps rate is based on the computation speed of the CPU and the rendering speed of the GPU. the SSD is not involved.

Upgrading from Intel 3930K to 9900K. Worth it?
etherbattx replied to obious's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Upgrading from Intel 3930K to 9900K. Worth it? can you explain more? how does it kill stutter? is it because of the access time? the asset being loaded, loads in 0.003 ms instead of 0.0035ms? or is it because of the drivers? with the neme drivers being more efficient than the sata drivers? i’d have to see some test results on this first.
