  1. Relax dude. Most of the people in this thread have been contributing and trying to get to the bottom of this problem for weeks now. This is your first post in the topic and you contributed exactly zero. We are all frustrated, and making jokes blows off some of the built up steam. Try it.
  2. I agree, and I think all modules should have a level flight autopilot (if there is no simulated autopilot) as a nod to the fact that, whatever armchair pilots like to believe, it's still a game being played on pc peripherals in peoples' basements. It can be something that is easily turned off (perhaps special options menu) so those who don't want it needn't ever see it. Much like someone does not have to use time compression if they choose not to, but it can be useful when balancing simming and real life commitments.
  3. Allow me to stir the pot with a little more crash voodoo. If I load a mission and then Alt-Tab out to windows, then Alt-Tab back into DCS I can restart or fly again as many times as I like without crashing (and without having to Alt-Tab again). Furthermore, I can go on to load any other mission and restart / fly again without crashing too (and without further Alt-Tabbing), ie. it plays normally. If I load the exact same mission without Alt-Tabbing it will consistently crash on restart / fly again. Tonight I intend to try playing DCS under the full moon, while festooned with a necklace of garlic and silver earrings.
  4. There's no way to move the TEMP folder that DCS uses is there? That is, have it use a different location.
  5. I wish we had that legibility of text in 2D.
  6. The Train Strafe quick start mission for the Channel map contains a folder called config which itself contains Server, SnapViews, SnapViewsDefault, and View lua files. These get dumped into the Temp folder and override the user's settings, messing up the views.
  7. Yes, I was thinking about this yesterday. I started checking to see if something was denying or delaying access to the files in the Temp folder. I looked at Windows AV system and added an exception for all the folders DCS uses. I checked the indexing service, but the Temp folder is already exempted from that. I loaded a bunch of missions - each time Alt-Tabbing out to Explorer to watch the files being created as the mission loaded. Whenever I did that the missions would load without any problem. I could Alt-Tab back in to DCS and fly the mission. It never crashed while DCS loaded in the background. I also checked to make sure the miz file is deleted each time DCS starts up and it is. It almost feels like DCS is trying to start the mission before the files are 100% ready. (I also noticed that some missions dump some strange lua files into that folder and mess up the view system - but that's a different issue.) This was obviously all done without using Windows 8 Compatibility. I found that while the 8 Compatibility works, it results in noticeable stutter and worse FPS.
  8. The Train Strafe quick start mission for the Channel map contains a folder called config which itself contains Server, SnapViews, SnapViewsDefault, and View lua files. These get dumped into the Temp folder and override the user's settings, messing up the views. dcs.log Temp.DCS.openbeta.zip
  9. Agree. The 'Compatibility Windows 8' seems to do something different. I spent the morning doing a full repair and remove extra files then trying the various other 'fixes' and I could always reliably make the sim crash after running a mission, restarting DCS, running a mission and hitting restart mission - every time. I then tried the 'Compatibility Windows 8' and trying this sequence a few times and there is no crash. Load times are longer/slower, but it seems to work. We'll have to see how long it works for.
  10. Haha, thanks, but no, I'd be the worst tester. I was just wondering if there was some commonality that could be the reason none of you is experiencing this issue.
  11. Can you share what the requirements are for close beta testers? Eg. no mods, hardware minimums etc? I understand if you aren't unable to.
  12. It's bizarre that no one at ED has these crashes. There has to be a clue in there somewhere.
  13. Yes, and it probably goes the other way too with plenty of people who also think that "rivet counting" derails too many threads, like the one adjacent this which just got locked. It's a big game and a big forum - there's definitely room for both discussions and many approaches to the game.
  14. On mine, if I delete only the TEMP folder it still crashes. But it seems to eliminate crashes if I delete only the fxo folder before I start the game. Not sure the TEMP folder matters on my install, vis-a-vis crashing.
  15. I decided to try your suggestion of using saturation to bring the zoom axis under control - works very well. I may just keep it this way. As for the trim, I think I would keep it on the stick for pretty much all the modules, except the port-starboard of the spit, if using a rotary there can make it faster.
  16. Nice - at least it's smooth and adjustable. Thanks for the update. Hope mine arrives early next week.
  17. Excellent! I wanted to keep my number of devices down because I still often fly 1946/ Pacific Fighters, but maybe you're right, that's the best way to go. Looking forwards to your report.
  18. Yep, totally agree. If you can find a voodoo that works for a few days ... great, go with it. But everything seems to break after a while. And when it does, try something else because it might work for a few days more. Eventually ED will get it fixed.
  19. Because I find the slider difficult to move precisely, and because for me the extreme ends of the zoom axis are useless - far too zoomed in to keep track of what direction I'm looking, and so wide/fisheyed that it totally breaks immersion for me and is also pretty useless to see anything. I think it's better to be able to quickly and accurately zoom to: 1 - a natural seeming fov that gives situational awareness of what my plane is doing and what is around me 2- a good 95°-90° zoom for dealing with in cockpit dials and instruments - to give a level of clarity and detail your real eyes would when focusing on those things 3- a zoomed in mode for details on the ground or distant aircraft like when your real eyes focus at distance Using the slider always felt uncontrolled, difficult to get to where I want to be quickly and accurately, and breaks immersion for me. I also have the /, *, and 5 mapped to a thumb button so I can make finer adjustments when necessary. I know my OCD is kicking in here, but I always have struggled in DCS to get a realistic feeling FOV. I'm not sure why the outside views default to such a narrow field of view (60°). It feels weird to me trying to judge distances between what is seen in cockpit vs all the other views.
  20. Perfect! That works a treat. Cheers!
  21. Well, that's somewhat disappointing. I might try sacrificing my slider to a virtual axis. Currently I don't use it as an axis but as three buttons for three levels of zoom. Thanks for checking it out.
  22. Wow, very nice! I'm in the Netherlands at the moment and the DHL here is just as crappy - damned either way honestly. If Fedex can get it to me on Monday it will be a week from pickup in Lithuania to my door - which is fine actually. I just hate the stupid spamming of emails and text messages telling me to be around to sign for the package and then having the idiotic status message "not due for delivery". Have you tried the rotaries for trim at all? The Spitfire takes a lot of trimming every takeoff and it's a bit slow using the HAT. On the other hand the P-47 seems overly sensitive with the trim buttons.
  23. Yes, sorry, I knew what you meant. I was just venting at Fedex. I wonder if they aren't super sellers thus far. Also wonder how popular the CP1 was. Honestly, they are a bit dear for what is just a robust button box with a gear handle. But then this hobby has never made sense financially. Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes after I get it set up.
