The FA-18 has a quick action Case 1 mission. I use this for straight in practice. You start about 8 miles out at about 3000ft. Once you hit the deck, just do L Shift-R to restart the mission.

I am not sure how it compares to an F-16 stick but I have the Kosmosima grip added to my Gladiator MkII and am really happy w/ it.
-
Yes we do have an airbrake. I have it operated by upper of the two grey switches on the right side of the Warthog throttle grip.
-
Also I retract flaps at about 200.

In a landing approach pitch is controlled by trimming to AOA. Roll controlled by the stick. Descent rate controlled by the throttle.

Can someone help me understand the AG weapons better?
CBStu replied to testudine2002's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
Re; the launchers. When you go to the re-arm page each position on the wing will list in a drop down what is available for that position. For instance a mid-wing spot can hold either one 120c or a pair of 120c's, your choice. But the positions on the side of the fuselage can only hold one 120c each. So no need to know anything about the launchers, just choose your weapon from the list, and it will mount the weapon and appropriate launchers. -
The warthog throttle does have a 3 position switch to the left of the throttle labeled 'flaps'. It's probably more accurate for the A-10 but it works fine for the FA-18.
-
Thank you for this I will give it a try. But why should I have to? Every other aiming cue works just fine as far as it's position on the screen.

I did this back in December. I am not a PC guy for sure and was worried like you. I can't give any details, mainly because I don't really remember, but what I can say is the change over was a lot easier than I was expecting.

I agree w/ you there for sure. For fun I set up a mission to try to take out two speedboats w/ guns (forget the real term) w/ MavFs on the way to the Stennis. So I head toward them from 20nm away and their label comes up at about 10nm. I start trying to get the Mav locked on and it's just too far. Keep trying finally lock one and launch the Mav and then try to swing myself toward the 2nd boat. Don't get quite lined up but hey, I can slew the Mav right. Yeah but now I am closer and that dang boat is flying down and off to the side of the Mav screen. Fly to line up the plane better? Yeah but now it's way away from where it was on the Mav screen. Ooooops, now it's off the bottom of the Mav screen. Dang I'd like to have someone else back there doing this.

So still no news about AG radar,SLAM,and new FLIR function?

I don't get it. Do some people think that ED are purposely working slowly so, if these people b-tch about it, ED will pick up the pace to make them happier? Is that how some people work at their job? There is absolutely no reason why Ed is not working as fast as they possibly can. XYZ will be ready when XYZ is ready. Instead of wasting everyone's time, study, and learn, and fly something else, until XYZ is released. -
That was a good question kitcho. I have been thinking the same thing. I never use the ground idle position so was thinking maybe get more total travel. Glad I don't have to bother.

As reference this is what my view looks like. 3 4 mile out by craig stuard, on Flickr I haven't done anything to move my head position.

I am learning and you are one of the posters I learn from.

I haven't messed w/ the idle part but have w/ the after burner on my TM Warthog throttle. First I filed the edge of the plastic stop to transform the stop into a notch that I can feel but can push through w/o actually lifting the throttles. AB throttle detent by craig stuard, on Flickr Then I went to the 'free flight' F2 view and positioned myself right behind the plane so I can see the color of the exhaust. It turns bright red/orange when AB starts so I wanted that to happen when the throttle is moved beyond the notch. Turns out that in the 'Thrust Left' and 'Thrust Right' "Axis Tune' changing the curvature to 8 or 9 and leaving the 'Saturation X' and 'Saturation Y' at 100 makes the throttle start AB just past the notch. I had curvature at 10 for a while but found out that coming out of AB by moving the levers back to the notch had the left engine just slightly red/orange.

Basic flight behaviour in transition from auto to full flaps

Thanks Razor. That makes sense. -
WOW, very nicely done.

A day or three ago in another thread I learned that I shouldn't drop gear at 350 while in the 350/800 boat approach. So now I am dropping it in the middle of the break turn and having trouble getting all set on the downwind before needing to start the final turn. My fix for my not being ready is to run upwind further past the boat. I had been starting the turn right over that speedboat. Now I go further but just by gut feeling how much further. I am going to take that 1.5 mile someone mentioned above and use tacan to watch for it.

I am far from an expert but one thing I notice is, in the fighters, we tend to crank in a ton of bank and pull back on the stick fairly forcefully for a turn. Flying more normally in more normal planes w/ maximum 15 maybe 20 deg of bank, I am thinking of the instrument (I can't think of it's name) that is used to indicate more or less rudder is needed for a 'coordinated' turn. It's kind of nice for us this way as we don't need to spend the extra $ for pedals. A twist for rudder stick works fine. I do notice that in a cross wind landing, once on the runway, a set of pedals would make the fine rudder adjustment easier so my rollout would be less snake like.

Basic flight behaviour in transition from auto to full flaps
CBStu replied to markturner1960's topic in DCS: F/A-18C
I have been practicing too since it was pointed out that I shouldn't be dropping gear at 350. Man it is much harder when you need to watch speed and drop gear at <250 somewhere in the middle of the first 180 turn. Just one more thing to do. It quickly became apparent that I need the speed brake but then I was still too fast as I leveled out. So did another one and found that the speed brake auto retracts I 'think' when the gear drops. So need to pop the speed brake twice? I was getting fairly regular scores in the low 50s and now I am back into the 40s. Dang this is difficult. -
I may be wrong but for me, once the circle appears, I center the circle on the diamond that surrounds the enemy plane. I assume that whatever system puts the circle into the HUD is doing all the compensating for G forces. Your second pic looks like my screen. I am not sure what your first pic represents. When this new gun system showed up the circle bounced around so much it was almost impossible to use. Now it has been calmed down. When I get the circle centered on the diamond and the 'shoot' word appears the bullets always hit.

I am glad the OP got his HARM working. As I keep trying to learn new weapons I love the HARM. To me it turns out to be very easy to use. I fly SP only and mostly using the supplied missions. In the one of Caucuses missions I started loading two HARMS. So heading from boat to shore, as soon as I get to my altitude, I fire off two HARMs. What the heck, might as well take out a SAM site on the way in.

Not that I can do this well yet but, in addition to a constant bank angle a couple other things I think enter into it. (BTW the FA-18 does go to a steeper bank angle on it's own. I am constantly giving small right shoves to the stick.) Getting a turn exit that has you positioned right starts w/ how far you are from the boat as you go abeam on the downwind. Should be 1.2 miles so if you are further or closer you will need to adjust your bank angle ( and hence your turn radius) to compensate. Also think of this. Say the boat's course is 360 and your downwind is 180. But the deck is angled at 9 deg. So the further you go on your downwind the wider the gap between you and that 9 deg line. Bankler doesn't like a too long downwind so, watch the tacan screen to see where you are compared to the boat. As the boat symbol moves down the left side of the HSI tacan circle abeam is 270 degrees. I try to be sure I start my turn before the next large demarcation, 240 degrees. This barely keeps Bankler happy but starting the turn at exactly the same place helps being consistent.
