Has anyone tried the 10900k yet?
Wali763 replied to james111333's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
5,3 is just a number on the wall. This will only be reached if only two cores are required and the temps are under 70deg to my knowledge. Even DCS is mostly single-threaded, I usually do witness four cores being used. So the I9 will not reach those 5,3Ghz in DCS, most probably 4,9 Ghz (allcore-boost). Still AMDs Zen2 (or upcoming Zen2- XTs) should have bad scaling over 4,4Ghz, so eveything over 4,4Ghz should give you less than expected returns -

Not sure, you are right. Looking at https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html which is just one single-thread-performance-ranking the 4790K comes in at rank 72 with 2486pts, my 9600K at rank 18 with 2788pts and the 10900K at rank 1 with 3200pts All stock, of course. But its clearly visible, that there has been some progress over the years. If you want to compare: my 9600k with 5,1Ghz did a 520 CinebenchR20 singlethread-Score just yesterday; maybe I could try again at 5,2Ghz too. Only got a multhread-score yesterday an then the PC crahed. -

Yeah, thats the solution. Putting in 4133-RAM, that costs (in a 32GB-kit) more than the CPU itself! Anno1800 is only single-core? Ive see/read lots of game-comparisons between AMD and Intel but still do not know, which game is resembling the needs of DCS the most. How come, you think Anno 1800 is that game? Regarding 10900K. For sure a good CPU, but you need to factor in the AIO too, which is a further 150 (Dollar or Euros). From the tests Ive seen, the 10600K with an OC should be much cheaper and at least on par with the 10900K. But well, AMD is within a month offering higher clocked XT-variants and later this year with Zen3 most probably will deal the final blow to Intels proud "fastest gaming CPU" Im staying with my I5-9600K with an OC for now, since I do not see a huge improvement with the new Generation for DCS. -
Hi. Im doing some testing/oc'ing on my 9600K (with a Noctua aircooler) right now. Always, when I use an AVX-offset, DCS is running with that offset; so, if I go to 51x and use offset of 3, DCS runs at 4800Mhz. Seems strange. Does DCS really use AVX?? Yesterday I ran DCS and some Prime95 26.6 at 5,2Ghz (without offset) and with 1,38V it seemed ok. But Im not willing to go that high 24/7. Im not sure, what to do right now: it seems I could go for 5,1Ghz stable for most things with decent Vcore, but using AVX-offset would give me the same 4,8Ghz I have right now with DCS. Or I could not use the offset with 5,1 Ghz, which would be for sure stable for everything except AVX-stresstesting. But I dont think, 300Mhz more would make a huge difference; in a brief, unscientific comparison yesterday I did not see a difference looking at the fps-Chart in Afterburner. Maybe 5,0Ghz with 1,28V regarding perf vs Vcore could be the sweetspot for me. But the real joke here is, that Im doing this all on a 100Euros-Gigabye Z370P D3-board. From what many people are saying this should not be possible on such a cheap low-end board. VRMs are usually (according to HWInfo) in the mid 50s and only got up to 80 when the CPU was drawing 150W in Prime95 (with AVX).

Im hoping, that this is finally a headset, that makes me enjoy VR. If the pic is right Pros: new cable with better routing Cons: none to see Hope: 130deg FOV and Rift-S-like sweetspot while maintaining overall resolution and HW-requirements.. Dont care: Reverb earpieces were ok IMO

Does anyone remember the good old days when making fun of someone because he simply had a different opinion wasn't so casual?? I think cpt.miller has a point. And just you and me accept lower standards, dont have to mean, everybody has to accept the same standards. Looking at all the PC-specs, people show here, DCS should run like a F1-car, but in fact its more or less limping. At least if your not only playing SP with only two units high over NTTR. But I guess ED know about the problems, also since the awkward release of SC has further shown the point, that something has to be done about the core-system. And if ED cant make this with the current business-model, they ought ot rethink this. But there was/is already a discussion about that. Still I find it interesting to see here some people complaining about the lack of some top-tier features, while others dont care, what they get shoved up their....... and even say thank you for that and jump to defend DCS instantly. Strange thing is, those unrealistic expectations of come from experiences in other games, where those fps seems just normal. So maybe no so unrealistic then I guess...

Is there something changing about this issue?? I did not check perf-situation since last update (coming with SC-release), but loadtimes are still terrible. It normlally is around 01:20 mins which is about one minute longer than with OB 2.5.5. Stable 2.5.5 was faster but has slowed down too it seems. I guess this has something to do with the copy-protection having been changed. Still is this going to be the standard from now on??

In the past I made some step-ups in hardware. I5-3570/24GB Ram => I5-9600K/32GB Ram 27inch monitor => 32inch monitor RX570 => GTX 1660Ti => RTX2070S Considering the costs those steps brought, the difference in experience was mostly small. Biggest was when upgrading the monitor. A few times I thought about getting a 2080Ti and also planned for a 3080TI once available. Still even the 2080TI is an execellent card (yet vastly overpriced) as stated above DCS is in many ways underoptimized to take full usage of the card. When I had the Rift S, the 2080Ti would have given me some 10fps (or an increase of 0.3 PD) more than my 2070S. For me not enough to put in the cash. Still being kind of envious of someone having such a card!

Is SC-release timorrow confirmed? I did find nothing yet....

3080ti or new CPU to overcome FPS issues
Wali763 replied to danielwwm's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Mhz matter less than IPC. AMD has better IPC so 4,2Ghz of AMD (Zen 2) are equivalent to say 4,8Ghz of Intels latest gen (coffelake). A i7-2600 (for its poorer IPC) maybe needed to clock 6Ghz to reach same singlethread-performance. I guess next gen AMD (Zen 3) will have even better IPC, so Intel could loose its 'fastest-gaming-CPU' - crown later this year. -
I dont think, the B360-board supports the 3200MHz-Ram. Only up to 2667. You need Z370 or Z390 for Ram-OC, which 3200 is. For overclocking the CPU you also need those chipsets. B360 dont do OC. I have a 'cheap' Gigabyte Z370P D3, that runs nicely. Have my 9600K at 4,8Ghz at only 1,24V Vcore. Only the Rift S dont like its USB-controller. Im pretty sure, a Z370/Z390 will give you at least 10% better performance with the Ram at 3200Mhz and the CPU at 4 8+ Ghz

Not planning to buy a RTX3080Ti anymore
Wali763 replied to Wali763's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thats of course a valid reason. But Id consider (also for DCS) upgrading your CPU first. That would not just in DCS seriously bottleneck your new GPU. Im also looking forward to newer VR-offerings like the Reverb G2. But three months ago, when I tested the Index, that was actually rather nice, I resold it again, since I did not (even with low settings) get the fps I wanted and did not expect them to be much better using a RTX2080Ti, that I was seriously considering to buy. A friend is using a 2080Ti with the Index and is often unhappy with the low fps his getting, especially in MP. But that is, what I was trying to say in the first place: no matter, what potent GPU you throw at DCS right now, it will not change the (low fps-) experience of DCS very much. Unless ED finally do something about it.... Right now, Im more into considering a QHD+ monitor with 37inches, that cost the same as a 2080Ti right now. But for that I might really need a RTX3080 then! -
So I was sure about getting the topcard of the next-gen vga-cards, a RTX3080Ti or a RX6900, if they're going to be called that way. But my experiences this year has stopped this intention for now. Right now Im on monitor, but have owned three HMDs in the last year. Rift S, Index and Reverb. Usually I have in easy places (high on NTTR) up to 144fps and in difficult places (lots of units) down to 40fps. Not counting the bad 2.5.6 effects (had even 5fps one time)... All that with rather high settings, but no SSAA or DLSS. In VR I had usually 40/45fps with moderate settings, with lows of about ~27/30 fps. With such a new vgs-card Id probably get higher max fps, like 200fps monitor or 90fps VR. Or I could increase graphic settings. But with the settings on monitor already very high, I presumably would get very little increase in visual fidelity. In VR I could increase SS (which I set quite low with the mentioned HMDs, like 130%SS with the Index) so I could get a kind of half decent increase. Problem is, my low fps would pretty much stay the same, since they are all CPU-related. And those low fps (especially in VR) are far more annoying to me than everything else. So, unless ED dont finally bring the coresystem up to date and offer CPU- multicore-support, I dont see a valid reason to upgrade my vga-card. Im for sure not gonna pay 1200e+ to still crawl around at 30fps in VR. But since current headsets didnt make me happy, Im on a hold with VR anyway... And for monitor I for sure dont need it, even if I upgrade to 4k. Dear AMD or Nvidia, if you want to sell a expensive card to me, send someone over to ED to help resolve their problems! Any other opinions?

BTW. VR seems to be religion here. And as we all know religion is always right! Critizizing VR for some is almost as bad as callling DCS a game! :P

Wrong place to ask this..... Go to an Audi-Forum and ask the question, if you should buy an Audi or a Mercedes? Probably will get answers of people that are highly biased. Just my input, from someone who sometimes browses through this part of the forum too. I had a Rift S (maybe 50 hrs), an Index (10 hrs) and also a Reverb (little less than 10 hrs). And I have a LOW Spec system (according to E-2C) with only a 2070Super and an overclocked 9600K (that has comparable singlethread-perf to a I9-9900K BTW). Yeah, VR is nice but it just has soooo many flaws right now. Some are VR-related, some are unit-related. The Rift S (while working very fine with DCS) has just poor resolution, that you have to get used to it. I really tried, but when briefly trying monitor again, made me go back. The Index is actually great, but IMO needs too much perf. I had to go 120%SS to have a morderaly smooth experience in bad situations and that way, visual experience was almost a poor as with the Rift S. A friend has a 2080Ti (& 8700K overclocked) and very often (on MP) complains about poor fps. It seems like 30fps on MP is the standard for him. SP according to him is much better. FOV is nice on the Index. The Reverb was somewhere between great and poor; great resolution in the middle of the picture (no SDR for me) but quickly getting blurry to the sides. Looking forwad in the cockpit and make a brief glace "down" at some gauges was not possible without moving the head. The cable was a minor annoyance too, even I had a ok fix for it. Overall, Ill come back to VR sometime in the future, but not right now. Problem is, that many problems with DCS come (IMO) from the old system-core, meaning not having multicore-support, hence the ever growing CPU-bottleneck. So waiting for a Rerverb G2 and a RTX3080TI or RX6900 will not resolve the issues. For me especially annoyng was all those shimmering; looking around on the carrier was for me a very sad experience. Nothing compared to the nice overall experience on the monitor. Using monitor (32inch 1440p) and TrackIR isnt perfrect and the spacial awareness of VR is unsurpassable, but for me the better resolution and the much less shimmering (aliasing) right now is the way to go. But from what I understand, VR is used by the majority of people in DCS, so it probably will suit you too.

Hi. Took some time..... About the "fog", I just created this with the ME. Its the same in stable 2.5.5 or OB 2.5.6. Still looks very strange. See Tracklog. And my settings in DCS. Fog.trk

I was very sure to get the RTX3080TI or and AMD-equivalent until 2 months ago, but right now Im not sure any more. It just seems to me DCS is way too CPU-bound to use the GPU accordingly. Recently I had a situation, where I had 7fps in 2.5.6! But thats most likely related to 2.5.6 and will hopefully be resolve soon. Normally I have only dips down to 40-50. Looking at Afterburner my (moderate) 2070-GPU usually only gets used maybe 50-70 percent with my 60fps-cap (because of TrackIR) on my 1440p-monitor. Also with the Reverb (the last HMD I tested) it seemed, that my GPU was not the bottleneck. All the fps-dips came from very high CPU-frametimes.. So what would a RTX3080Ti give me? On monitor I have pretty high settings and only could use (DCS-) SSAA or SSLR to up GPU-load. But what would that give me? Not too much I guess. In VR I could obviously up the SS/PD but that would only give me a slightly better image depending on the HMD. Overall I have the feeling, that a better GPU will increase (non-capped) FPS by maybe 50% in perfect situations, but I still will have the CPU-caused drops to 40 or 50 on my monitor. So the max fps (or some graphical settings) will be higher, but the drops will still be the same as before. This IMO will be true until DCS will offer real support for multicore-CPUs. So actually right now I think, investing in a 1200ish-RTX3080Ti is money thrown out of the window. Anybody can give an argument to still buy such a expensive card?

Im believe, youre probably right. To me this feels also fishy, that a problem found so close before release, now takes so long to get fixed. My guess would be, that ED knew the problem all along but tried/hoped to release the SC without fixing this right away. But after having those last minute troubles they maybe decided (or were forced) to step back and do the proper groundwork and resolve that problem for good. So maybe with the final release decksliding could be a thing of the past...... Am I being too optimistic? :smilewink:

Had both, but also sold both and am still on TrackIR. Clarity of Reverb is great, but just a little outside of the middle its already quite blurry. So you need to look always straight at the dial you want moving your head. Not possible to do a short glance down/to the side. Cable is annoying too. WMR wasnt. Index is great overall with better clarity over the whole image, but worse resolution in the middle. Bigger FOV is very nice. Needs more computingpower compared to Reverb, which is strange.I guess its since you need less SS. I preferred the Index, but since I was often stuck in low fps with fairly low settings (seemed more CPU-bound), sold it again. The Index with Reverb-resolution and much better fps (and Rift-S sweetspot and software) were the sweet spot for me. Maybe Reverb G2...... but I guess DCS will still be the real problem with its not too great VR-adaption.

I actually use both stable and OB; since I only do little MP, OB is not such a problem. Still I tend to shift towards stable more and more. A new patch in OB right now seems more scare than hope. With the stable release you loose only little (dont have the Jeff; right now dont care about the preordered SC) but gain quite a bit in other areas. Also plan to not update stable when there is actually an update available and will wait for some time to see, if people have problems as they have now with OB. Right now I guess with stable 2.5.5 and SP I could go on for quite some time. For sure until the A-7 arrives....

Thx for taking so much the time to answer my post. You are right, that saying Thank you to someone might most likley up their motivation. Actually Im now a bit uncertain about my position on the use of "Thank you"; I still tend to believe that a thank you is in order for something "voluntary, above average" and not for some service I pay for anyway; and ED is a business and even they tell you, they are all passionate about the topic, they still need to pay lots of bills and their personell. But thinking about it, there are for sure many more cases, a Thank you is also used, then I thought of in the first place. But that also maybe have a cultural aspect or just out of courtesy reasons. Anyway, if Kate Perederko were asked, which kind of Thank you (just the words or the cash for a sold module) she'd prefer, Im pretty sure, which way she would go.... About my last paragraph (which was a bit childish) I wanted just point out, that even I am ciritical about EDs doing sometime, still do cherish their work obviously. And I did not like being called childish. Anyway, Im dont know nothing about software-developement but still I clearly can see, that lot of EDs-work just goes into keeping the outdated hull of the ship DCS running, while a much newer hull (mulitcore-support or a new graphics engine for example) were needed to accomondate all the new stuff coming to DCS. And until that is not resolved, things will most likely not get much better. Thats why I will not update my stable 2.5.5, so I still have a working platform I can go to, even without SC. Anyway, Im looking forward to the SC, may it come tomorrow or only in 6 weeks time.

This is your opinion and I will not say, you are wrong. But I got a question for you: Did you ever when you bought a TV or a bread or new tyres tell the guy at the counter: Thank your for selling this to me! Did you ever thank a policeman for doing his work, because his passion for rules made you 50 Euros shorter?? Have you ever emailed Bill Gates and thanked him for making such a great OS? All those people - no matter how passionate they are about their work - do this for a living! Buying their stuff ususally is the best "Thank you" you can say. To me there is no further Thank you needed. But you can of course let them know, that you like and apreciate their work. If those people taking my money are passionate about their job or not actually does not matter to me much. To me the end-result is the relevant thing. Id prefer having a working product from someone boring or unhappy with his job, than some broken item somebody "passionate" created. To me it seems, that nowadays many try to add some "feeling" to their products like "lifestyle" or in this case "passionate", so they can charge you twice or at least to justify some shortcomings. About the SC, Im actually not too happy about the delay. But what really is annoying is, that ED turn up at the last second and tell us "No, not today. Come back in two weeks!", even they knew a few days earlier, that they had problems. If the MP-situation isnt a foul excuse anyway. And reminding somebody, what he said and promised some time ago is not "childish". If you like this to be done to you, it is your decision. But dont look down on people and call them "childish" for not thinking like you do. By the way: whas the "effort you put into this module this night" sucessful? Seems not, since we still dont have the SC, do we? BTW: Ill will now update my signaturer to show how much appreciation I had for DCS; maybe you can do this too, so we can in childs manner compare, who has shown more "Thanks" for ED.

Just tried a "create mission" with the A-10C. Since it was night at first I made a second one, where there was some fog on the ground, that looked very strange. See pic. Also fps were horrific, I got dumps down to 5fps. Normally I have straigt 60 (max in NVCP) with dips to maybe 45 at the most. Also a Mig 21 was missing a (non-mission-damage) vertical stabilizer, when I first made the mission and it was night. Have no photo though.

Maybe they then can incorporate the Tomcat upon the release. Most likekly wishful thinking though. One gets used to delays in DCS. As for ED Ill only buy close-to-finish products from now on. Except for A-7 and Eurofighther, that are 3rd party.
