G2, supersampling, MSAA performance face-off
Baldrick33 replied to DeltaMike's topic in Virtual Reality
My 8600K has served me pretty well in VR in DCS and other games which are predominantly reliant on single core speed. It runs stable at 4.9GHz. Of course a time will come when its age will hold back modern developments, maybe that is the issue with OpenXR. It is just that OpenXR is often presented simplistically as a panacea for WMR devices through bypassing SteamVR which is a bottleneck. In my experience DCS runs nicely at 45 fps with SteamVR and motion reprojection on. It is very playable and enjoyable with my CPU in VR as long as I don't get greedy with object numbers in missions. MSFS has never run particularly well for me in VR with OpenXR. DCS doesn't run well with OpenXR. Now that may be down to the motion reprojection, If I turn it off with SteamVR and fail to achieve 90fps it just isn't smooth. Motion reprojection with OPenXR seems ineffective. Maybe I should try turning it on in WMR using the old text file editing method? I don't want to get into using FSR for tweaking as I want to understand why OpenXR appears to be of lower performance to SteamVR without a bunch more variables. Maybe OpenXR is more effective with more modern CPUs but simply bypassing SteamVR doesn't seem to have the gains suggested. -
G2, supersampling, MSAA performance face-off
Baldrick33 replied to DeltaMike's topic in Virtual Reality
They maybe but it is inevitable they will be compared and there seems to be a belief amongst some that MSFS support of OpenXR is giving it a significant advantage for WMR devices. My experience of MSFS doesn't support that belief, however, given the numbers lauding MSFS VR performance I am somewhat intrigued why my experience is different. In DCS my experience thus far is that OpenXR performance in DCS using the mod is inferior to using SteamVR and reprojection. Given that I also find MSFS to be equally inferior I question whether it might something my end settings wise. Hence the comparison. -
G2, supersampling, MSAA performance face-off
Baldrick33 replied to DeltaMike's topic in Virtual Reality
I have never had much success performance wise with OpenXR. I get a much smoother experience with DCS and SteamVR using motion reprojection with my G1 than I do with MSFS for example. Not sure if it is my system - 8600K @ 4.8, 2080Ti, 32Gb RAM or settings somewhere. I just tried DCS with it and it worked but it wasn't as smooth as SteamVR. I tried it motion reprojection on and off in OpenXR settings. As mentioned MSFS is just the same. -
Setting the Hind up with the HOTAS Warthog
Baldrick33 replied to derbarbarian's topic in Controller Questions and Bugs
I just use the little slider to the right of the Warthog throttle as a throttle in helicopters. As others have said once started just leave it at max. I find the Warthog throttle is surprisingly good as a collective and is very precise. -
I use Joy2Key to map those throttle buttons to key strokes using the press and release function which recognises both states. Then I can use those for off and idle consistently across different modules. Plus If I set it the throttle to off prior to starting Joy2Key will pick up the button release on pushing forward rather than having to have to put in the off position after mission start. It just works properly like it has separate off and on buttons this way.

I recall I mapped the same button to recentre VR in DCS to the reset button in Necksaver, otherwise I had the same issue as you.

Do I need a collective?
Baldrick33 replied to Dangerzone's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
In my early DCS helicopter days I was beyond rubbish and convinced myself it was the collective (using a Warthog throttle). So I managed to set up a CH flightstick to be a collective which worked reasonably well. I set a button as a modifier to switch the axis to some unused control so I could hold its position to access other controls and simply put it back into roughly its position press the modifier again to re-enable it as a collective. After many hours I became semi competent but got a bit fed up switching the gear between fixed wing and helicopters so reverted to the TM throttle as an experiment. If anything it further improved my flying! So it was the practice not the collective. I do have the throttle reversed, I have no issue with muscle memory and pull to lift vs push for power. It just feels more natural. The obvious exception is the Harrier which messes with my mind when I go into panic mode! -
When will we get the voices for Petrovich?
Baldrick33 replied to Stratos's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
The fact that a two seater gunship AI copilot is not talking is a serious issue, can you imagine the F14 mod without Jester? regarding EA sales It will be reflected on my part. I will noy buy the Apache until they add the Petro and George voices. Which is exactly my point. With Early Access you get to choose if there are features that would be considered essential you will wait for. In my case I have had a lot of fun flying the Hind, so I am happy I had the opportunity to get it before certain features were ready. -
When will we get the voices for Petrovich?
Baldrick33 replied to Stratos's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
In my view the very point of Early Access is that some features will be missing. What features impact the purchase decision is a personal choice. For some waiting for somebody else's "must have day 1 feature" is a pointless delay. If a missing feature really is a show-stopper then it should be reflected in EA sales. -
Need help making a decision about my HOTAS
Baldrick33 replied to The_Chugster's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Just to chime in that replacing the spring in the Warthog base with a softer (green) one is a very simple and safe process from my experience. That said my plan is to replace the base with a Virpil one when funds allow and use the TM grip. -
Have you tried VRK? You can set it up to have landscape layout which is ideal for Chuck’s Guides and can bookmark sections for quick access.

Without access to sales data I couldn’t say. If we assume the WW2 stuff sells in lower volumes then the asset development has lower revenue for investment and needs further revenue which if incorporated into the modules would further reduce sales so is sold as an option to those prepared to pay. Pure speculation on my part but that is what this thread is all about which is kind of my point
-
I responded to your "simple math" quote above. Regardless only ED will have the data of sales of modules vs price and can ascertain optimum pricing levels. It is basic economics and we can only speculate how elastic or inelastic the demand vs pricing curve looks. The only guaranteed statement is what we might think is beneficial to ED's revenue stream may not be reflect the economic reality, however we think it is simple math!
-
Simple economics and pricing elasticity of demand. Increase the costs of the modules and you risk a decrease in sales that reduces overall revenue. My guess is that most customers neither play multiplayer nor belong to groups who make missions and campaigns for each other. Now the fact we have both multiplayer and enthusiast community groups is of great value but it isn't the generator of income that enables ED to do what they do. I sympathise with the issues raised but ultimately I think EDs revenue stream from single player customers will be a far bigger driver in determining pricing strategy than is being accounted for. DCS is a niche enthusiast product, that comes at a cost and multiplayer is a niche within that which probably isn't core to the success of the product so that potentially comes with niche within a niche associated costs.
-
The issue is the numbers playing WW2 online is minuscule compared to sales of WW2 modules. So the vast majority get to choose if they want to pay the extra without any concerns of a divided online community. I guess one could argue the divided community suppresses numbers online but I think it would still be a small minority if the asset pack was included.

When will we see a major update to the games Core mechanics?
Baldrick33 replied to ak22's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I think those who were into more realistic simulations in the turn of the century be it flight or racing recognise the very existence of developers in these genre as something to be thankful for. Back then we got to buy a new boxed set every six months or so which made the previous ones somewhat obsolete because the new ones had better graphics, sound, features, AI and so Unfortunately the market wasn’t viable and the big Publishers abandoned the genre and the small studios couldn’t survive. Content seems to be king in flight and race simulations as a measure of completeness as much as we might decry it that appears to be how the market works, so I think we probably have to somewhat accept it as a means to having the sims we have at all. Of course that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t push hard for the things we want but the business model maybe a necessity for the very development of the niche product we desire. -
I am not sure how to set the folder it initially looks in but you can manually edit the mission section in serversettings.lua in Saved Games\DCS.Server1\Config. Mine looks like this: ... ["missionList"] = { [1] = "G:\\Saved Games\\DCS.openbeta\\Missions\\Misc\\Batumi TEST V7 RED.miz", [2] = "G:\\Saved Games\\DCS.openbeta\\Missions\\Bf-109K-4\\Bf109K-4 - Caucasus - Takeoff.miz", [3] = "G:\\Saved Games\\DCS.openbeta\\Missions\\Mi-24P\\Convoy Raid.miz", }, -- end of ["missionList"] ["name"] = "DCS Server", ["uri"] = "startServer", ...

When will we see a major update to the games Core mechanics?
Baldrick33 replied to ak22's topic in DCS Core Wish List
My wish is that wish lists were exactly that. A list of things someone personally wants, throw it out there and see if there is a consensus. No one speaks for others, the community is diverse. Opening up with accusations regarding development or direction just diverts the discussion away from the list and the thread just becomes valueless to ED and the community. I would absolutely say +1 to a save game feature mid mission if anyone remembers what the wish list was... -
I am pretty sure that Open Beta and Stable are the same versions right now.

In my experience just driving around in our cars we feel a lot more than we see the car shaking. Our eyes are pretty good shock absorbers so it isn't like having a fixed camera bolted to the headrest with no stability control. So when sim developers add visual shaking to race and flight sims typically it is exaggerated for specific instances like a stall or road bumps to provide missing feedback that we would otherwise feel. In race sims especially it is quite typical to turn these off or down in VR to stop motion sickness! Physical shakers provide that missing seat of the pants feel so we can get the body feeling that we wouldn't otherwise see so I wouldn't expect the outside view to be shaking. Even as a passenger in a large jet you can feel turbulence with seeing the world shaking. In extreme circumstances in DCS like your ailerons are all shot up or over stressing the air frame then the plane is visibly shaking but for normal manoeuvres you will feel it but not see it. It can take some tuning with settings to get the right balance. -

Mine was caused by the cable with my G1. HP sent a replacement and the regular Steam VR critical error crashes disappeared.
