Hi, it's time to introduce the complete team here in this thread. Vietnam War Vessels is not really a single person effort! Here's the team in alphabetical order: Beldin: Hello, I've played computer games basically since they were invented. Aviation and military history enthusiast. Long time Recording Engineer going back to the analog tape days. I started modding games for personal use back in the early 2000s. DCS is the first game where I've attempt to share my efforts with the community. Citizen: Hi, I'm Citizen! I've been an avid flightsimmer since I was very young. My first game was Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 for the Macintosh, and it was A-10 Attack! by Parsoft that fully cemented my love of the genre. Like many others, I'm also a fan of the Operation Flashpoint/ARMA series, and I keenly remember being annoyed at so many servers transitioning to some weird zombie mod. For better or worse, DCS is the high water mark for military flight simulation, and I'm glad to be a very small part of pushing the genre forward. Hawkeye60: I am a 3D modeler, Astronomer, Master gardener: I won the silver plate award at the USA Topsfield Fair, Engineer, Tech addict, Amateur Musician, Flight sim addict! Been flying sims since 1986 on a Apple 2E Sublogic! Bought every sim since! Eagle Dynamics has been taking my money, and been a member of the DCS community since 2016 but flying it since 2020. Started modeling back im 2017 with Markindel, Crazyeddie and Stonehouse, the best of times. Odyseus: Hello, my name is Odyseus. I love all things military. I've started modding back in 2003. I had zero experience but I really wanted to learn. So I joined multiple projects in the ARMA 3 community. I ve been playing video game since I was a little kid and I always like a passion for simulator. Now I've the opportunity to bring some of my work to DCS by helping with the Vietnam War Vessels mod. Petr005: I'm a hobby 3d modeler and I've been involved in multiple projects: RHS for Arma 3 and up, various Squad mods and the infamous Burning Lands Vietnam. I find the Vietnam War period interesting as a modeler and look forward to contribute to the Vietnam War Vessels mod. seabat: They taught me how to march down the middle of a street when there was perfectly good sidewalks. They said "did you see the bats in the cargo hold?" I had not so I went to look. Never saw them but as I actually went to see bats the name stuck. Learning how to do liveries for DCS Modules now. Spino: Hi, Spino here! I got into flight simming about ten years ago with the Microsoft Flight Simulator series. My first combat sim was CFS3, which really got me hooked on combat aircraft simulation. About five years ago I discovered DCS, fell in love with it, and never looked back since. TeTeT: I'm TeTeT, a long term DCS and Arma 3 player. I started modding with Arma 3 and expanded late 2023 into DCS. I've been interested in the Vietnam War since a long time, played various boardgames like VG Vietnam, Downtown, Silver Bayonet, Platoon back in the day. Since 2014 I joined the Arma3 Unsung Vietnam War mod team and now run Vietnam War Vessels for DCS. We're building and rigging assets for the Vietnam War era and focus on AI assets. toan: I'm an aeronautics enthusiast and I have been using DCS since 2020. Because I'm also a pilot and amateur sailor, I'm quite addicted with DCS naval assets and naval aviation, testing large carrier groups battles, and enjoy testing multiple ships, aircraft and weapons. Whiplash: I'm Pedro a.k.a "Whiplash" from the beautiful country of Portugal. I'm a modder and one of the developers behind the S.O.G. Prairie Fire and Spearhead 1944 DLCs for Arma 3. I am deeply passionate about gaming, particularly within the Mil-Sim and Flight-Sim genres and everything Vietnam War related.

Welcome to the Vietnam War Vessels 0.5.4 hotfix update! We've addressed several issues identified in version 0.5.3. The Generic Essex class carrier had some missing mesh parts, the Maddox wasn't consistently engaging air targets with its main guns, and the F-8 Crusader has been problematic since version 0.5.0. We've updated the models for both the Generic Essex class carrier and the F-8 Crusader, and made configuration changes to all three assets. Please download from https://github.com/tspindler-cms/tetet-vwv/releases Changelog since 0.5.3: 2024-07-26 F-8 Crusader - Remove gear suspension code - Fix AIM-9C/D position - Fix hideable pylon - Update edm to fix various problems 2024-07-22 F-8 Crusader - Remove broken launchbar CVA-31 Bon Homme Richard - Fix broken Essex generic edm Maddox - Use sensor 20 for mk12 127mm AIR

Hi, we found another problem in the update to the Maddox and hence will delay the release of 0.5.4 for another round of testing of the latest RC build. Cheers, TeTeT

Hi, we've detected a problem with missing parts on the generic Essex class carrier and also with the launchbar of the F-8. We're testing fixes currently and hope to push out Vietnam War Vessels 0.5.4 hotfix tomorrow. Cheers, TeTeT

Thanks for sharing. I see the first mission has now a revision without F-8s, does it work for you now? On the second mission 13_Chu_Lai_Road_Recce_Day_CV-59.miz, it works fine on my system and the F-8s are present. Maybe something went wrong when installing the mod? Can you perhaps share the dcs.log from you when loading 13_Chu_Lai_Road_Recce_Day_CV-59.miz in a direct message here, or even better, hop on our discord at https://discord.gg/zyp3rSdj and inspect the problem via a screen share? Cheers, TeTeT

Congrats @Stackup I thought the reference to the toilet bomb via the toilet house was a sure giveaway! @Raffi75 I guess the mission was created with an older version of the mod. We renamed and unified the model names in between. Most likely the transition from crusader to tetet_crusader or, much less likely, from crusader to vwv_crusader is causing this problem. If you let me know the mission author and the location of the mission file I see if there's a way to fix it. Cheers, TeTeT

I agree that an E-2D Hawkeye would be an awesome asset to add - but unfortunately this idea leads out straight to the place below, which may aid us to find the answer:

Hello, We have made several updates and renovations to the Vietnam War Vessels mod. Unfortunately, the release of the MiG-21MF has been postponed as the model requires significant reworking to better represent the aircraft. However, we are also developing a well-recognized propeller-driven plane for the mod, though neither plane has a fixed release date yet. In terms of recent updates: Odyseus has improved the fore and aft sections of the CVA-31. The Maddox now features new bridge windows that are more in line with the Vietnam War era appearance. Technically, the CVA-31 deck has been renamed to PALUBA_, which has resolved the BDA messages in the debriefing. We hope you enjoy the update! https://github.com/tspindler-cms/tetet-vwv/releases

Thanks for your kind words! When I sourced the model it was advertised as MiG-21F-13, but clearly it isn't. I was believing it's a MiG-21MF, but it sports the GP-9 gondola and no built-in cannon. Maybe therefore it's probably the model of a MiG-21PFM? I got myself a book from the author of https://mig-21.de/default.htm to educate myself a bit more on the actual variants that existed and their relative performance. The table at https://mig-21.de/deutsch/technikbewaffnung.htm seems also to hint that the GP-9 gun pod was used by the PFM, not the MF. It's good fun to learn about this while we try to bring it into game I can see that some serious scholars may snicker at this naive approach, but for the hobby that modding is, it's the right approach for me. To uncover new knowledge and make it available for the enjoyment of the game. Cheers, TeTeT

Military Assets for DCS by Currenthill

Nice idea. Ideally I would love to convert it to an MiG-21F-13, but we'll see what time and skills allow for. Right now we're still busy with the MiG-21MF and some other possible surprises. Cheers, TeTeT

I've tried to compile Vietnam War Assets in this list, the link found there works: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pjekOidlNesbXKBUe-VUTVaoxj7itVYlqjrSFFDJ4_M/edit?usp=sharing https://e.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=kZ1LInZ0wjQdrrnx3Xc16IxKhWuuYtzHX4y/

Hi, ironically I was looking for a MiG-21F-13 model, but what I sourced is closer to the MF, minus the GP-9 gun pod and missing intrinsic gun. So in a very real sense we'll make do with what we can acquire for free or at reasonable cost. Based on the comments on the MiG-21bis I've changed the SFM table slightly. We're looking for additional eyes on the current dev model of the MiG-21MF. If you're interested in fighting against the AI only MiG-21MF and want to help with development please send me a DM here and/or join our discord at https://discord.gg/Jyr8a27K and ping me there. Especially results from dogfights between F-4E (player) and MiG-21MF (AI) would be of interest. Cheers, TeTeT
-
Ah, thanks for sharing! In the current testing these problems won't be detected, as I let AI F-4 and F-8 fight with AI MiG-21MF and check if the results are believable. As the advantage AI pilots have in DCS seems to be generic, it's suddenly a level playing field of AI vs AI again. I guess matching the SFM up with the EFM used by a player aircraft is simply impossible. The EFM can attribute many more factors in calculating the planes performance than the lua table based SFM. If you find an easy work around, would be great to hear if adding weight is such a solution. Cheers, TeTeT

Hi, The MiG-21F-13 was high on my wishlist as well, but for now we go with the MiG-21MF variant, as the model looks more like an MF than an F-13. There's nothing wrong with the MiG-21bis for me, it's just that it arrived in Vietnam in 1977, too late for the Vietnam War. Right now the SFM is based on the MiG-21bis, but this is still subject to change. @Biggus can you point me to the thread were the shortcomings of the MiG-21bis are highlighted? Maybe it's valuable to our efforts here. Cheers, TeTeT
-
Thanks for the mention! We're trying to bring in a MiG-21MF as AI only asset. Currently biggest missing piece is a pilot figure, otherwise development is progressing. We've also got an A-3B Skywarrior model, but rigging has not even started on it. Good luck with your project! TeTeT
-
Thanks for the suggestion! We placed the wheel more inwards and it's gone in the more recent builds now. We've also changed armament and flight model slightly, so it's not a carbon copy of the MiG-21bis any longer.

Hi, and a testing video from yesterday's build. Pilot still AWOL

Hi, work continues on the mod. Seems we've found the reason for the bda messages in the debrief, a fix still needs confirmation from testers, but it looks good so far. The DD Maddox got a face lift for the bridge, and the windows changed to a more Vietnam era contemporary look: While development is still on going, we're now testing an alpha build of an AI MiG-21MF. These screens are from a first live fire test vs US transports. Note that we're still lacking a pilot model, preferably a North Vietnamese pilot, if anyone has a model spare Cheers, TeTeT

Welcome to the maintenance release 0.5.2 of the Vietnam War Vessels mod. In this update, we have made two improvements: the H-2 Seasprite can now land properly, and some F-8 Crusader liveries have been upgraded to 8k resolution. We hope you enjoy these enhancements. As with Vietnam War Vessels 0.5.0 and 0.5.1, we now offer also a separate livery pack from the base mod. You can either download the complete zip (765 MB), or the base zip (524MB) and optionally the liveries pack (241MB). https://github.com/tspindler-cms/tetet-vwv/releases

Hello, with the recent launch of the F-4E Phantom the mod saw less attention than in the prior weeks Nevertheless, some progress was made: seabat has created updated 8k liveries for the F-8 Crusader: And today another break-through was finally reached with the Seasprite. It now takes-off and lands properly, at least according to some first tests: Cheers, TeTeT
