Have this features been attempted in other planes before?

This isn't SSAO, as FSX doen't support it, neither does DCS or any other flight simulator, if I remember correctly. This is baked on the texture by 3ds max or maya, or whichever 3d programs you're using. They calculate occlusion, based on geometry as you say, and then they add shadowing on the texture and export it. The lack of AO shows up mostly in situations where there's lots of lighting, like in the fist picture. While, when the light gets lower, it's much harder to discern it. I believe it's the main reason why the best screenshots of FSX are mostly taken at dusk or dawn. I hope I'm not coming off as condencending or adversarial. Hehe, another new engine, 20 years down the road maybe.

Jaz, I think what aaron is talking about is lighting, and not geometry (I may be wrong of course). I think it would look much less flatter with ambient occlusion baked on the textures. Check this gif from FSX. You don't even need to be a texture artist to do that.

I really like the model, in my opinion one of the better looking from the upcoming planes.

If you buy one of those extensions some guys are selling around here or SimHQ it should take less strength to move out of the deadzone and the stick should be more precise. As for the throttle, you should be able to map it so that it doesn't use the space before the engine and after the afterburner detents.

Yup, fake. Or if not fake, bad. Or the guy posting the video didn't mean to fool people, just to show how the game could be with these clouds. There are no clouds near the plane. And the clouds from the first scene appear to be superimposed over the sky, which is why some parts of them are missing.

110-130 fps? Is this indicative of the performance of the Black Sea map in EDGE? Or are there stuff missing from this version?

I wouldn't make any upgrades specificaly for DCS till after EDGE is out. We don't know how good the multicore support will be.
