Shagrat, I'm sorry if my post conveyed such a feeling. I've been enjoying ED's products since Flanker 2 and hope to enjoy many more to come. I wasn't complaining about the AS IS situation, but talking about development in the future. I'm surprised to see so many "defensive" replies. Nobody is being criticized.
-
Actually, my simplified example discusses splitting up of a single task, for example AI, not splitting rendering and AI, that's another thing.
-
I gave a simplified example, as you know. There's no point in discussing programming patterns in detail here. Multi-threaded programming has many challenges but it is a required element for high performance applications in a many-core environment. As of yet it seems that CPU development is going in the direction of many-core, rather than more powerful individual cores. Parallellism is inevitable, albeit complex.
-
I never stated that it's easy, especially with an existing project with a large code base. However, do you suggest ED ignore many-core and hope that single-core performance improves dramatically in the future? This is not likely to happen.
-
If things are spread across multiple threads (cores) then the rendering code would not be waiting as long to start drawing as it does now. This would increase FPS. Imagine a truck that needs to move 20 boxes of cargo from point A to point B. Case X: one person loads the 20 boxes into the truck which takes a time of "20" Case Y: four people load the 20 boxes into the truck, it now takes a time of "5" The freight trip time is the same in both cases, but loading of the cargo was quicker, therefore the whole process is faster.

Even really old CPU's support multi-threading ... ;) I'm quite confident that we will see it in DCS at some point. Until then, I'm using the Windows 7 "core parking" feature to save some power :D
-
This is not correct. Even Excel 2007 (which RTM'ed 5 years ago) uses multiple cores (as many as physically available) for certain calculations.
-
Note: Both PS3 and XBOX360 are multicore systems ;)
-
It's not evident, but it is needed ...
-
You run all three of them simultaneously with 60FPS and graphics at high? Call me a sceptic ... DCS can definitely be optimized (e.g. full use of many-core CPU's would go a long way). The graphics are already quite intensive (I have a significant performance drop when I turn on flood lights, formation lights, position lights, landing&taxi lights ... I'm mostly flying in the dark :D) Anyway, we're digressing from the OP. This discussion belongs in the Game Performance forum.

BS2 is installed and activated separately. Original BS1 data and activation remains untouched. Not sure if this answers your question. If you run out of activations (for either BS) then you should be able to get more activations by creating a support ticket.

I suggest we wait until "it" is actually released instead of complaining about: - something which has already been decided / is already being developed - we don't know anything about as of yet Feel free to complain after it's out.

P-51 with AIM-120 :D Since the "Nevada terrain" will introduce the EDGE terrain engine, will this engine also be used for rendering the Caucasus terrain? Excellent :)

Regarding the CDU (from the change log): •CDU will perform some actions after the aircraft has landed: 1) DTS download will be performed. 2) RER and CEP will be calculated with special RERCALC waypoint being created and set as the steerpoint. 3) CDU warm start will be performed, once the CDU download is complete.

It has changed. From the change log: •New Sidewinder growl sound has been added

Are the trees in forests combined in large blocks (= single mesh), or are they individual models?

Next DCS (US) Fixed Wing Aircraft Wish List

They'd be able to release new products more quickly generating more profit ... Perhaps even do some more military contracts on the side. -

With the recent addition of rolling ships (depending on weather), it must be a naval aircraft for sure ... -

Beware: this patch doesn't install when the directory path includes unicode characters (same as all previous patches) -

coolts, have you downloaded the new upgrade installer? http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?scr=product&ProductId=13&end_pos=135&lang=en You only need to download bs2_upgrade_setup_en.exe

Graphics is just one of the things that evolve. Flight model, AI, weather simulation etc. are all evolving with each DCS release. Improving the engine (and adding to it) is as important as introducing new flyables.

BS2: New Shkval POV shrinks everything and cuts part of the TV Screen

Is there a way to disable the automatic "zoom-out" animation at the beginning of a mission? (which is also present in DCS-A10) I have to reset the view using the enter key every time :/
