Wags update: F-15C: DCS Flaming Cliffs Update
Pyroflash replied to 159th_Falcon's topic in Chit-Chat
Not issues, per-se, the gulf war was a cacophony of NATO assets flying every which way around the battlefield. It was more of an ROE issue TBH. In many cases, the ROE MANDATED visual confirmation of a bandit before action could be taken. As far as this goes to corroborate your claim, AFIAK the reason this was done was that that NATO IFF was not deemed to be infallible, and that even if an aircraft wasn't squaking the "correct" code, it might still have been friendly. -
Wags update: F-15C: DCS Flaming Cliffs Update

I've heard from F-15C and F-16C guys that their jets are more or less on par with each other in terms of BFM capability. The F-15C has more power available, so it can give the pilot a couple more options, but the F-16C guys say that their bird is MUCH easier to handle. That being said, no, the F-22A would eat them both for breakfast. 9 G turns at 20,000' at a similar radius to the F-15C, and it still accelerates. I'd venture a guess that F-22A/F-15C guys are probably going to win anyways though since A2A is almost ALL they do. -

It's a bug. The hovering thing happens with all aircraft BTW. At least they don't sink into the ground anymore though.

Yes. He is right. An energy fighter only means that your tactics in a dogfight rely upon conservation of a superior total energy state. Your aircraft is not capable of sustaining a higher turn rate or a lower turn radius, so your tactics represent a "smarter", more conservative way of flying. It is entirely possible to dogfight angles fighters with energy fighters. You just have to know what you are doing. My guess is that you are trying to park yourself on his six for a tracking shot. This is not going to work. The P-51D does not have a viable control zone in respect to the 109. Keep your corner speed, turn in the oblique, keep your potential energy high, and wait for him to mess up. Then, when he gets too slow, come around and rip his wing off with a snapshot. BTW, I suggest doing these fights until you can reliably kill the bandit within 720 degrees of turn. Traditionally, your SA decreases as the fight progresses, and it is not advisable to prolong a fight for more than 2 minutes or so. History says that anything beyond that, and you are basically tumbleweed as far as the rest of the world is concerned. Get in, get out quick, sanitize, and re-form. Then leave the area. Fighting attracts the wrong kind of attention, and chances are that you don't want to start ANOTHER fight at your current energy state. BTW, I can assure you that GG's knowledge of air combat tactics is real, and not in any way purely theoretical. You're more than willing to test that though. I'm sure his Eagle is hungry by now. :D

Vipers aren't on SADL, they are on L16. Friendly AEW&C aircraft, however, would be able to translate this into a usable SADL signal. At any rate, I'd much rather have top cover from an F-15C than an F-16C. Actually, I'd much rather BE top cover, but that's beside the point :D. -
It's a risky market, and although it would have been cool to see this project come to fruition in our little world, I also understand that it is a business. Best of luck to the team, it's a little sad to hear of any project teams dropping off the market for DCS.

Pretty good, I miss the humor of the Fighter Fling videos.

Your statement confuses me. The F/A-18, F-16, A-10, and F-15 are just about from the same era. Plus with all the modernizations, the legacy hornets are probably, functionally, the oldest of the bunch. -
HUD also shows Mach # accurate to the third decimal place. There is also a machmeter on your airspeed gauge. TAS and GS can be read from VSD.

GG, GA, GLHF.

If you want up to date definitions and theoretical tactics for the modern day, I suggest you take a look at The Art and Science of Air to Air Combat by Robert L. Shaw. "Energy fighter" and "angles fighter" are not definitions of aircraft, but rather definitions of particular fighting styles designed to take advantage of your aircraft RELATIVE to the bandit's aircraft. That's all they are though, tactical stances that you take as a pilot in a fight.

Next DCS (European) Fixed Wing Aircraft Wish List
Pyroflash replied to Busterbvi's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Razbam DOES have a M2k in the works still, but their other products (The T-2, and T-6-IIB) are taking priority ATM. The M2k is still scheduled as their third release AFAIK. -
nice little video i found of Su27 visiting US

The F-15C is the boss. :D -
FC3 can also be really complicated at times. Don't let the simple nature of the aircraft systems fool you about trying to actually fight in a plane.

Yes, Wargame: ALB has a ton of potential if you can deal with the initial frustration of being restricted to force decks that you design before the battle starts. Airpower is essential if you wish to react quickly to enemy air assets or incursions. Since they are highly mobile, they are essential assets for a reactive force, but I would not say that they are essential for EVERY strategy. Some of my tank focused decks, for example, have very limited fixed wing support. Only using them for when I am really pinned down, or have no other effective way to respond to an incursion. If you are worried about the price of aircraft, there are extremely cheap aircraft that can be used for limited action. I like the Yak-38 and A-6 for when I need airpower, but don't really need to spend a lot of money for a super effective unit. On the other hand, expensive air units are worth it if you have important missions to achieve where risk is greater than normal, or when accuracy is paramount. The F-117A, for example, is really effective at taking out otherwise untouchable defenses, and the A-10A is an extremely effective tank killer when used conservatively.

It'll be interesting to see who, exactly, from our part of the globe is participating in these trials. Also interesting is how the M1's are going to fare against the T-90SM's. It's also a pity that we will likely see the U.S Army/MC bring their A-Game crews with stripped down tanks. Definitely not combat conditions, but I'd be willing to bet that a lot of the ERA and TUSK gear is going to go away in favor of less weight. It'll really be interesting no matter which way it turns out though.

Yeah, also remember that at one point, ED was more forthcoming with information. The WIP and ever changing nature of these projects eventually led people to be less than cordial about the whole affair. Some became rather rude, and borderline violent about their perceived concerns. A few weeks back, ED made the decision (for a second time) to stop doing regular updates, and to go back to only releasing information about major projects that are very near completion, or smaller issues that have been changed in patches.

Gotta be REALLY conservative when playing pub matches. You can't count on your team backing you up if something falls through. I'd say generally a good idea to SAM up and pay attention to incoming SEAD. Control of the airspace is a sure way to ensure that you have enough time to react to unexpected surprises.

Crank up the tension on the arresting wires and watch the tailhook rip off?
