  1. Yes, I do believe that officers of the armed forces should be trustworthy. By putting on the uniform, they are representing their country, its traditions, and its honor. As with any other career path though, you have the bad eggs; the ones who just don't seem to care, or worse yet, choose to abuse their status. I'm going to put this out there, but the majority of officers are not like this. It takes a certain kind of man to lead marines. A worldly, deeply rooted man, who can deal with the intermeshing of tradition and operational reality. Anything less and he is ostracized by his men. Anything more and he would be a General. Even if that weren't the case, if FO hadn't ever existed, would you even have ground to suspect at all?
  2. Kockeywash. It is extremely simple to use the E6B in conjunction with in flight weather services. Especially in technically advanced aircraft with FMS that literally give you things like TAS, GS, WCA, etc. Actually, it has saved my butt a couple of times. You should still have your flight planning info with you, so it's not like you have to go back and plan everything over again. The different rules for bearing change have their place for efficiency, but they are also useful for different things, while the E6B remains a mainstay for course and bearing calculations as well as the many other functions that it can serve in a non-technically advanced aircraft that does not calculate TAS or density altitude in an onboard mission computer (The P-51D is a good example of this). It should go without saying though, that even though the E6B is a quick and effective tool, one should not be reverse engineering crosswind components in the pattern. By that time, you either got it right, or will figure it out the hard way. Attempting to use the E6B at that time would at best be a distraction, and at worst a funeral. Also yes a thousand times to kneeboards. Along with electronic flight bags, kneeboards are an unbelievably convenient place to store things like approach plates and folded sectional charts. Some even have a handy E6B pocket. Yeah, that would be a fun mod. Someone make ForeFlight for the P-51D. :) Let me tell you about how once upon a time I was a student pilot. If I had some of the times I was trying to futz around with an open map in a cramped cockpit on video, I would probably fall over laughing. I also occasionally cry every time I realize that I had become dependent on electronic flight planning during flight school. A manual E6B is actually somewhat faster to work with than an electronic one. Plus it doesn't need batteries like my electronic one (although I must admit, new technology has made my life pretty easy compared to back then. Some of the apps I have on my phone are actually somewhat handy. Obviously I don't have my phone out in flight, well, unless my flashlight runs out of batteries. The screen on those phones is actually not a bad light source in a pinch.).
  3. You couldn't wait NINE DAYS to start bashing him? At least reserve your judgement until the Kick Starter launches. Nobody is being forced to pay anything right now, and so far, there is no proof that KI has done anything to slander our community. Now, I'm more or less a trusting guy, but when an ex Marine Corps officer comes out and says that he is going to do something; I am more or less inclined to believe him. If only for that one thing, officers of The United States Marines tend to have a lot of integrity. If this person really did something to offend you, by all means, speak your mind. If, however, this is just another round of baseless accusation, kindly take it elsewhere. We don't need that here.
  4. You should be able to admit that KI's situation is just a TAD bit different from that of FO.
  5. It would be kind interesting, but at the same time kind of difficult. A lot of the tasks would have to be automated or otherwise require assistance. If you think about a hardcore aircraft simulation, only the pilot is required to make it authentic. But for a hardcore ship simulation, so many different components and aspects exist, that it would be difficult to manage with just one person, or even ten. Not only that, but the shear amount of effort required to do a hardcore ship sim ala A-10C, would make this project infeasible from the start. The work required to simulate all aspects of a living, breathing ship would be absolutely staggering when compared to the modules we have right now. That being said, a Dangerous Waters type simulator would suit the DCS environment plenty well given slightly enhanced damage and systems models. They would need to be functional, but not functional to the point of it being inundating for the development teams.
  6. I agree. Somehow people think that they are entitled; and to some extent they are. People are entitled to their own opinion, but until proven otherwise it remains just that; an opinion. DCS: F-35A just got announced a couple of days ago, and for what we know, it could be many things. Some people, however, have convinced themselves of certain ideals that may not apply to others. So what do we know for a fact? These are not unbiased opinions, but true, cold hard facts. 1. The F-35A is a new aircraft. So new in fact, that there are still bugs. 2. It is a fairly dynamic design at its current stage. Stuff is being changed and modified at virtually every level. 3. It can now shoot down flying things and bomb ground targets. Weapons testing continues at a rapid pace to qualify it for other munitions. 4. The gun pod works. Yay. 5. There is tons of documentation out there that can only be found by those who know where to look. A.k.a. military flight sims are all made by Jack Sparrow. Basically everything else is an opinion. Now for what we know about KI: 1. His team has produces simulators. 2. He has worked on integrating systems for the F-22A and B-2A. 3. His team is professional, and has proven that they can deliver a product. 4. KI has been thoroughly vetted by ED. 5. Did I forget to mention that KI has Wags' approval? Yup, sounds about right. So if we KNOW that there is information out there, and we KNOW that ED trusts KI, then can't we just chill out for a second and wait to see what this turns into? At least stop with the baseless insults.
  7. On another note, I would actually like to see some of the sources for this project. I would understand if you were unable to directly show us, but references would be appreciated. :)
  8. What basis do you have for this statement? Do you have personal experience with this company? With any of its executive staff? Have you read any releases about scandals involving this company or its employees? Please back up your statement otherwise what you are saying is essentially libel. This is a VERY serious offense which can bring undue economic and personal stress on a person or firm.
  9. In the same place I would go I guess. At any rate, I would be happy to pay $40 or $50 for a pre-release/beta F-15C with AFM. This is, however, under the stipulation that it will, at some point, be upgraded to the full DCS version free of charge. I would pay $30 for just the AFM, but that is pushing it. I understand that many people expect/want a discount of some sort if they have FC3 purchased. Now I purchased on day one of the release, so I might have gotten a little bit more play time on it than some, but I've gotten my money's worth. Some people say that they might not have bought it if they knew that a new module was coming out for the plane that they wanted. I say stop making excuses. The real point is that nobody owes you anything that they didn't promise you. ED promised you FC3; ED has since delivered FC3, and obviously the people who are complaining got their money's worth or they wouldn't own the game anymore. What it really comes down to is people wanting free stuff. Don't be embarrassed, I would beg for free gas if it would help. The only reason that people are begging for it to be discounted or saying that they wouldn't buy it if it were over a certain ridiculously low amount of money, is because they want it. They want it, they want it now, and they want it done. I want it, I want it now, and I want the whole everything. I have bought every single ED product since the original lockon on day one, and I have no intention of slowing down. I'm not rich by any standard, but they doesn't mean that I wouldn't eat at home for a day in order to buy a superb product that will last me ages. Hell, I've spent countless hours in the A-10C, which by my standard is all but a slow, ugly, pig with annoyingly high pitched engines. So there are really only two choices: 1. You can buy it, because you want it. 2. You can opt to not purchase it, because you don't want it. 3. You need it because DCS has replaced food in your diet, and without it you would die? There is not: 4. I really, really, really want it, and would give my second child to have it, oh if only it were cheaper than a parking ticket. 5. (my favorite) I hate this game, it is terrible in every way, shape and form. I knew it would be this way going in, but I bought it anyway to prove how much I hate it. I think that I should have (insert x amount of free items here), because, although I didn't want to get a refund, I still hate this game. /rant P.S. I accidentally necroed this three day old thread.

  15. EDGE is a terrain engine. AFAIK it has nothing to do with particle effects.

  17. PhysX is a pretty configurable platform. Yes, some functions can be baked in 3d model editors for rigid body phsyics, but the platform as a whole is pretty adaptable. It also runs very well on the CPU, so everyone is able to take advantage of it, not just Nvidia users. That being said, however, I do not think that the current platform would work very well. They already have a fully customizable physics engine in place, and there is no need to add something extra just for the sake of having it. It isn't like it is going to do a significantly better job in the long term, and in the short term, it will cause a large amount of integration issues. Kind of. The Black Sea map is currently not designed to work with the new EDGE terrain engine. Therefore it cannot be used with the updated engine tools at the moment. We will, however, have to see where ED takes us. Pretty much. PhysX is a highly configurable platform, and is capable of pretty much whatever physics principles you throw at it. That being said, like any other REAL TIME physics simulation, corners will have to be cut in accuracy for the sake of decent performance. It'll be the same, whatever platform you choose to incorporate. Though as I've said in the above paragraph, I don't really think that TFCSE would benefit all that much from using PhysX (if at all), and worse, it could actually create some MAJOR setbacks.
  18. Due to the way the new auto updater works, a clean install is no longer necessary. If you run the repair tool, it essentially does the same things, sans all of the reinstalling. Although, just in case, I also have left lomac on my computer in case my DCS drive crashes or something to where I am left with no choice but to reinstall.
  19. That's the thing. He uses those references for the true parts of his statements, whilst deliberately distorting the same facts to make his point stand out more. That's why it's so effective; It isn't all lies. At times, however, it is impossible to read between the lines, so it is better just to not pay his works any real attention unless you have previous background information/experience. That isn't to say all of it is misdirection. His peer edited pieces (EDITED, not REVIEWED) (f.e. Tracking RADAR section in Merill Skolnik's RADAR Handbook 3rd edition) are actually quite informative. Just watch out for anything on his site. Most of it is unreliable information.
  20. This is pretty sick. How twisted do you have to be to believe that killing another man for the sake of killing him is the right thing to do? A soldier kills because he is ordered to. That doesn't make it any more graceful, or any more right. I'm not here to debate the morality of killing, but a soldier doesn't drag an enemy combatant into the middle of a populated city street and proceed to publicly desecrate his body for show.
  21. Plus modern fighter RADAR systems actually tackle a lot of the functions that we currently have to slave over in FC3. If you think that the FC3 jets are in any way, shape, or form, more capable than their DCS counterparts would be, I think you'll find yourself to be mistaken.
  22. At least we are far more likely to see this turned into a DCS product than the MiG-29K. With the litany of new products being announced as in production by ED, however, I doubt that the Su-33 will see attention by them in the near future. This is, perhaps something that a 3rd party could tackle though.
  23. If you are looking for something with a big enough learning curve, without having to worry about the systems, FC3 might be a better bet. It is still a lot to learn, but in FC3, it's less bout the systems, and more about the act of air combat. It is, however, slightly more difficult to install this product than it is to learn the A-10C. This is because it requires an installation of the original Lock On: Modern Air Combat (not Flaming Cliffs) from 2003. The A-10C is an extremely satisfying, and extremely capable aircraft if you can tackle it though. I do recommend flying it, and taking the time to learn it, even if you do decide to move over to FC3.
  24. Wait. The new Intel Haswell chips are set to come out in a few months, along with the new Nvidia 780's. 8 GB RAM is a MINIMUM amount, more is always nice if you are one of those people who never closes anything down. An SSD is really nice to have, but still not really economical when compared to platter drives. PSU and mobo should be of GOOD brand names (Corsair, ASUS, etc.), and be in the professional or enthusiast ranges (this will cost you more, but it is worth it to have a good PSU). Also needed is a good case (for airflow and cable management reasons, a good case is important, especially if you plan on overclocking). Personally I would say that a medium tower ATX case is a pretty good investment. Lian-Li and Antec make some pretty quality cases. If you plan on overclocking a ton, liquid cooling is a good thing to have. At this point, you can either choose the easy to install closed pipe systems or go with an open pipe system. The self-configurable open pipe systems require more work to install, and are a bit more bulky, but can be customized to a user's individual needs. Despite what uninformed people may say, liquid cooling uses non-conductive liquid, and will not harm your computer in any way, shape, or form, should it break. It will, however, cause any attached component to overheat quite rapidly, and will cause a system crash at some point shortly thereafter. Possibly more important though is a good HOTAS and rudder pedals. Your best investment is going to probably be a HOTAS Warthog, CH pedals, and a Track IR 5 w/ trackclip pro. There are cheaper peripheral routes, and understandably, some of this is quite expensive, but it is worth it.
