SBP's IR is pretty good last time I checked.
-
IR seekers can and WILL lock onto erroneous heat sources. The AI might not care, but the missile will, which is the important part. Even if preventative measures didn't work, it would benefit you to still practice them for when the seeker and missile logic do get improved. Plus the whole "AI doesn't lock onto flares thing" only applies to SAM threats. Preventative flares are still a great idea when flying around ANY potential IR threat, especially other aircraft. Honestly, if I am within the WEZ of any weapons system that could engage me, I am pumping out the flares every couple of seconds and resting on the controls to evade the missile should I see a launch. Really, the most important thing is speed. ESPECIALLY FOR THE HOG. The A-10C can go decently fast enough, but its acceleration is terrible. If you are caught going 180 kts with your pants down, you can basically forget about everything else and start reaching for the handle. As a last ditch effort, you MAY be able to bank away from the missile, mask your exhaust with your tail, dump ALL of your flares and pull towards the ground, but at that low of speed, it probably won't help anyways. This is especially important considering your engines should be at idle when defending against IR threats. Heat signature plays a big deal in this sim. Also, when you actually do see a missile launch, don't be scared of pumping out three or four batches of flares (typically more than four flares per batch) in order to spoof that missile. Being winchester because you are out of flares is better than being dead because you didn't pop enough. Also make sure to aggressively maneuver against that missile. Flares probably won't do much without some out of plane maneuvering in order to confuse the seeker.

How do we feel about the implementation of realistic bird/wildlife strikes?
-
Well, the big things looks to be the terrain. Players without DCS WWII wouldn't have access to all of the peripheral stuff of the DCS WWII environment (map, vehicles, etc.). So it will probably be that you will, indeed, be able to use ANY aircraft you own in the WWII environment (provided you own DCS WWII), it just wouldn't be very immersive. Sort of like the setup we have now, except backwards. A-10C's shooting at T-34's.. Okay, somebody is definitely going to re-make "The Final Countdown" when an F-14 gets released.

"Digital Combat Simulator" is a branding that denotes a wide range of products developed by Eagle Dynamics for the DCS: World environment. it does not imply anything more, or less than that.

The MiG being modeled is a modernized version FYI. Still not up to par with the super modern aircraft, but it's probably going to be able to hold its own in the semi-modern era as well (F-16A, M III, Draken, etc.) Also, depending on the lot number and the level of cooperation TFC has with the U.S. Navy, the F/A-18C may be either more or less accurate than many other aircraft from the era. I would admit, a lot 20 F/A-18C would be pretty nice though. Oh but what I wouldn't give for a good F-14D

No, of course not, but if the pilot is doing everything right and things are still not working, then something is going wrong. In the current state of this game, you have to get dangerously close to (or inside of) the A-pole in order to achieve an effective shot. The way it works right now basically almost forces a pilot using the AIM-120 to make a decision that forces him to the merge in order to chance a hit, or to continuously turn tail and run in order to generate spacing; all the while praying to god that the missile does something. ~10 nm is too close to be using effective BVR tactics.
-
It's not really the notch. It's the missile guidance as a whole. Even when aircraft don't make any super effort to evade, the missiles just go dumb. The seeker logic could use a lot of work as well. That being said, Yes. The notch is a really effective maneuver in this game. No clue if it is this effective IRL. Probably not with some of the newer generation signal processors and associated RADAR systems.

Hello, my name is Pyro and I drink it all for show. But ED flies the hog so they gotta drink it slow. I have no doubt that it will be excellent, as per their past work. Just give it time and it will be out when it is out.

A little F-15C AFM update - 7 December 2013
Pyroflash replied to uboats's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Huh, one of the comments from DCS said that it was their first DCS TV commercial. I wonder when it is airing. -
Please stop speculating. It doesn't do anyone any good, and it just brings people to conclusions based on incomplete facts and NO context.
-
What it really comes down to is.. Are you comfortable not using curves (Yes, if you are REALLY precise, it can work wonderfully)? Are you comfortable using curves? If the answer is yes to either one, that's all that matters. If the answer is no to both, you need to practice more.
-
It's not a secret per-se. The F-15 for example, a lot of fighters can slide backwards without suffering fatal engine failures. The real trick that allows Russian aircraft to do what they do is their ability to fly at high angles of attack without departing controlled flight. The falling and turning in flight is due to the thrust vectoring on the Su-35's. The F-22A can do this too.
-
Keep in mind that cannon mode being enabled only changes the HUD symbiology. It does not arm/disarm anything like in the Russian jets. You can still fire missiles while in guns mode and vice versa.
-
If you want more control over the "limits" of the aircraft, your settings should be fine. If you want more control over fine movements in the low-middle end of control, you might want to switch it around to positive curves. What it essentially comes down to is what you are more comfortable with. Fly using different settings and see which gives you more control over the sweet spot that you fly in.
-
I doubt it would slow the aircraft down that much. Maybe 1-5 kts max. Maybe 15-20 kts if you ripple two pods off at the same time.
-
Yes, this is real, but for future reference, this thread probably belongs in the chit-chat section.

Yeah, the auto-updater usually has decent speeds. Unless of course you are trying to download a major update within minutes of its release. Then you are competing with thousands upon thousands of other people for limited bandwidth.

Washington State custom map project
Pyroflash replied to Uriah's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
For normal users at least. I'm sure that if you talk to ED, they will have more information for you (Uriah). After all, they created the maps somehow. Just because the information isn't publicly available doesn't mean that there isn't a way to currently do it. -
FYI -- DCS Forums Blocked By McAfee

Sigh. -
I read somewhere that Valve doesn't have any plans to bring its tech to the mass market. A pity, but I guess they plan to work closely with the OR guys in finding innovative ways to make their product better.

This is a godsend. Truly. Please continue to make miracles happen.

Oculus Rift, GIS data and control hardware
Pyroflash replied to Uriah's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
I can confirm this. As a previous owner of all sorts of Joystick products from FFB to force sensing, the Warthog is so far the best product that I have ever used outside of real life aircraft controls. The only pity is that there is not a suitably priced set of pedals at the same level of quality. As for the lack of FFB, well, it could be better, in terms of feeling the buffets, but all in all, the product adds so much that being forced to live without force feedback is a minor inconvenience at worst. Be warned, however, that is does REQUIRE a set of pedals to work properly. There is no practical way of controlling the rudder with this HOTAS. -
That wasn't in response to you. That was in response to the prospect of people setting up a server and waiting for someone random to join. If you come on with the sole intent of teaching a specific person or set of persons how to play, that can be quite enjoyable. Waiting around for four hours with nothing to do is not.
