Sometimes you get a flicker in the screen every 5 seconds or so if you are using a flat screen TV as your monitor but the resolution is to low such as trying to use a 780p to use as a monitor. I had this problem. As soon as I switched over to the higher resolution of a 1080p everything was fine. The refresh rate of the TV can't keep up with the speed of the computer. That's just the problem I had. Not saying it's yours.

When I first joined the ED/DCS family I thought I had finally found something that was above the simple money grabbing corporate game developers. I thought DCS and ED was a group of flight simmers themselves who actually cared about what they were putting out. I hope my views of them where not wrong. Something as big and intense as ED/DCS should be.... "Flight Sims, For Simmers, By Simmers!!" While I can understand them having a lot of irons in the fire so to speak for the money that these modules cost they should still have a dedicated group to just fixing bugs. From there presentation video the F-14 took 4 years to develop. That's a lot of time and dedication to something. Hope it's as good as the presentation videos make it look.

Keyboard F5 Player to Target View In Cockpit?
msmith301 replied to msmith301's topic in View and Spotting Bugs
Yes it was called the "Padlock" view. Padlock player to target. It was widely used in the older games. Gave you the feeling of flying around while looking out of the cockpit at your target. You could also set a control that let you toggle targets until you found one that you wanted to go after. In DCS the [F5] keyboard command (not the plane) gives you the padlock view from the player to target but only from the outside of the plane. Helps you to maintain orientation to both your target and situational awareness. Flying on a computer is not the same as real life. You don't have the orientation to your surroundings the way you do in RL. In my opinion. -
Sorry. Just getting into DCS since Christmas.

Right now I have been learning just the F-5E. Although my son did by me the F-14 Tomcat for Father's Day while it was on sale. What a good son!! Anyway when I'm dogfighting against the other F-5E I have found by playing with the different keys that the [F5] key gives you an exterior view from your plane to the target. The camera follows the target plane while keeping your plane in the foreground. You are also able to zoom in and out on your plane keeping your target in view. QUESTION: Is there a way to use this view where you can have this same feature from within your cockpit? We used to have this in the older flight sims from years ago. They called it "player to target". Your view would stay locked on your target while you maneuvered your plane to bring your nose around to your target. I used to switch back and forth between these two views. Was a great way to dogfight so you're not always looking around for the enemy when you already know where he is.

Is this only playable on servers or are any of the missions downloadable for single player against computer?
-
What do you mean DLC 2.0? The existing F-5E is a fully workable cockpit. Other than fixing the bugs what else is there to change that we would have to pay for an upgrade? If there is an upgrade coming out it means we've paid for a substandard version than the upgrade should be a substantial discount not a modest one.

Other than setting my UFC panel to "missile" mode is there anything else I should be doing before starting the fight? I've read and seen lots of articles regarding cooling of the seeker head, uncaging the seeker head. Am I supposed to be doing these thing manually or are they done for me as soon I switch to missile mode?

DCS 2020 and Beyond PC Build!

 No problems sir. Just makes it very hard when trying to read. I don't do a lot phone emails or forums for that very reason. Can't stand when I say something into the phone because you're driving down the road and you look at it and it's nothing like what you said. So now you have to wait until you can actually stop to correct all the smart phone typos. Just curious what country are you in? -
Is there an issue with MSL dogfighting mode? I was in the games basic one on one dogfighting mode and was behind the target the entire game but I never did get a missile lock despite have it in MSL mode. Fire one of the missiles just to see and it went wild because there was no lock. Do you have to use TDC to lock even when using heat seekers in MSL dogfighting mode?

DCS 2020 and Beyond PC Build!

Seriously it's like trying to read one of my wife's text she sends me on the phone. I'm always like.. say What!!?? Were you doing a talking text while driving or something. If you read it it came out very garbled and joined together. Not being sarcastic just trying to bring to your attention. The clearer something is the more likely you are to get intelligent responses. Just saying. -

Is it just me or did this guy shotgun a case of Red Bulls before making these videos? Holy crap. He had my head spinning trying to keep up with him. Definitely sounds like he knows his stuff but damn!! Like watching a video on double speed. Had a girlfriend like him once. Used to stuff a sock in her mouth just so we could have sex...lol. -
DCS 2020 and Beyond PC Build!
msmith301 replied to Peter97's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Same here. Have been using my work laptop for DCS and I have completely used up the 512 SSD. Since I don't play DCS at work and have a pretty extensive controller/keyboard setup I want to build a new desktop to stay at home hooked up. That way I'm not using 5 port 3.0 USB ports just to plug everything in every night. Want to set this up just for my simulators and whatever other gaming I do. I use a 50" 2160p 4K UHD monitor for my gaming and for some reason it's just annoying using the same setup for emails or searching the internet. The big screen is to big. For just browsing, email, etc. I always have the laptop at my home office desk with a smaller 39" 1080p. Just seems the perfect size for this. Problem is I haven't built a pc in over 15 years now. Back when dual cores first came out and I was using a Lian Li heavy duty aluminum case with slide out hardware for easy swapping. I still have this entire setup sitting on the shelf in the closet. Don't know if any of the hardware is even usable. Had a pretty high end audio setup in it. Most of the gear I purchased thru New Egg. I don't want to go out and drop $1200 just because it says Alienware on it. -
Anyone play DCS on in 2k on a 34"?
msmith301 replied to JanK's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You should be fine. I'm using a 50" insignia 2160p 4K UHD using my laptop with i5 and only 16 gigs DDR Ram set to full resolution using Spudknockers exceptional high graphics YT video as my setup guide. Couldn't ask for better. -
Throttle Side Mouse/Scroll Wheel addition
msmith301 replied to msmith301's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Just curious...are the thumbnails visible to everyone? If so do they expand to larger size pictures when you click on them? -
Just picked this up and tried it last night. Wish I had found this sooner. What a difference it makes being about to manipulate the cockpit controls and keep your hand on the joystick. Flat rotating wheel works the same as a mouse scroll wheel. PC reads it the same way. You can use for turning knobs back and forth on panels or use for zoom views if you like. Nothing fancy simple mouse style button left/right buttons but having an ambidextrous mouse is such a treat. Set up right behind the throttle as shown in the pictures. Set up is temporary still figuring out a permanent mounting for it. Wanted to make sure my hand on the throttle cleared it first. Might set it down behind the throttle and run cord under throttle base. Sorry for only having thumbnails to click on. Since I use Google photos I still haven't figured a way to post full size pics without setting up some kind of account on a third party site.

I've read forum post of people not being used to it and actually having sore necks after the first couple of times using it.
-
Ahhh!! Much better. Didn't realize they updated it within the system files. Do the Early Access manuals such as F-16 get updated as well? Never mind. Just checked. damn all that ink wasted!! [Edit] From checking into the updates I can just print the sections that have been added. One big one for the F-16 was the addition of the air to air refueling. Changes the page numbering but no big deal.

While the concept of VR is awesome I've stayed away from it because I have heard the graphics aren't even close to a high grade T.V./Monitor. I have been using a 49" 2160p 4K UHD. What's your opinion?
-
How far out of date is the down load file for DCS user manual from what we are actually using? When I read thru the manual it looks like a much earlier version of DCS.
-
My bad. I was going off a recently downloaded file that actually shows both switches being labeled as T7/T8. cougar_throttle.pdf
-
I never liked the T7/T8 for it's designed function the speed brakes. Always felt to stiff and mechanical for something that IMO needs to respond smoothly when dog-fighting. At least mine always feels like you have to jamb it back forward to get it out of the T7 mode.
-
Damn!! That's a lot of muscle memory! Trying to remember 29 different buttons with 3 different settings for each. All while 20mm shells are whizzing past your canopy..lol. TOPGUN here I come. I do like using the T7 & T8 option as opposed to have to hold in the S3 button the whole time. I like to use the S3 for toggling the different flight views. Been doing that for years. The S4 is always my check six control.
