  1. LoL! The problem the Soviet pilots faced was that when the Communist Party said "GO", you either flew or you faced the firing squad. Seriously, though, I was just asking if the Hind is equipped for low-level/low-visibility flying and I guess the answer is "no". I can't imagine any air-force would risk lives and equipment in bad weather if the machines are not equipped to handle it. That said, mountains are notorious for weather fronts moving in out-of-the-blue...
  2. Hi guys, The other day I was flying a mission deep in the Caucus mountains with low level clouds obscuring much of the terrain. I ended up climbing above the clouds, but it made me wonder: Is there a way to fly low-level in near-zero visibility in the Hind? There's the radar altimeter, but even if it warns me, the Hind is a heavy pig, and high up in the mountains she's not exactly gonna climb fast. I have very little faith in the accuracy of "moving map". So... ???? Thanks for any advice, Doc
  3. The good old Mi-8 winter convoy attack mission, but flown in the Hind - much more appropriate.
  4. A classic Spitfire vs. Bf-109 matchup. The guy flying the Bf-109 knew what he was doing. Respect!
  5. I'm new to the multiplayer scene, so this dogfight against a well-flown Bf109 showed me the difference between human and AI pilots.
  6. My first attempt at a ground attack in the Hind (from a few days ago). Didn't quite go as planned, but I managed to limp home more or less in one piece... LoL!
  7. Some silly fun: Mi-24 vs. Ka-50. This is my third flight on the Mi-24 - totally inept and inexperienced at flying her. Just for fun - please don't judge too harshly.
  8. Here's a bit of silliness: Having flown her exactly twice, I figured it's enough to take her up against the Ka-50. LoL! Just for fun - please don't judge too harshly.
  9. My first flight. Please don't judge too harshly...
  10. Here's the video I promised. Skip to time index 4:45 for the weird behavior.
  11. I can confirm. I'll post a video in 1/2hr to demonstrate. Somehow it gets into a weird CCW flat spin. I really would like to find out what I'm doing wrong to get into this situation. I'm very comfortable in the Mi-8, and I've never seen this type of behavior.
  12. Without getting into details, I will just comment that I have both the F-16 and the JF-17, and I tend to fly the Jeff a lot more. Both are similar in many ways and each has its unique quirks, advantages and disadvantages. Fuel-wise, I find that the F-16 empties its fuel tanks a bit faster than the JF-17. I also like the SD-10s on the Jeff better than the AIM120Cs, but ED keeps tweaking the missile behaviors all the time, so it's hard to say say which one is "better". The F-16 can carry more missiles for A2A engagements. I can't comment on the A2G stuff - personally, I'm only interested in A2A. But I think the F-16 has a greater variety of A2G munitions than the Jf-17. I agree with the others, though - download the JF-17, fly it and see if you like it.

    Public servers

Korea1952 is a good server: F-86 vs MiG-15, human players only, strong emphasis on realism.
  14. Unless its a guns-only duel with another player, just don't fly the MiG-15 on a server that mixes more modern type jets. Even the F-5E is superior in every respect - max speed, roll rate, missiles, radar, etc. You may have snuck up on an F-5 here and there, but they have the advantage if they are paying attention. As for the more advanced jets - they can splash you with missiles from 30-50miles away and you wouldn't even know they have fired a missile. The MiG-15 has no radar, no RWR, no countermeasures. It is much slower and has a low roll rate. Play against the F-86s on the Korea1952 server - the odds are much better and it's more realistic. Either way, have fun! (Btw, I, too, love the MiG-15. However, I wouldn't dream of taking it up on the Cold War servers. Just my 2 cents...)
  15. By the way, another alternative is MiG-15 vs. F-86 on the Korea1952 server. It's jets, but no computers, only guns only and a lot of fun. From what I've seen, most people use that server between 4pm and 7pm EST. I've flown on it a couple of times and it's a lot of fun - some good players on both sides to keep you on your toes.
  16. I fly quite often on the Clash of Wings server. Less crowded than SoW and a greater variety of planes to choose from. Depending on the time of day, there are usually 3-4 other people (sometimes more) on that server and a bunch of AI.
  17. To destroy or to let live? Decisions, decisions...

    SRS for I-16?

Yes, for the most part, the real I-16 did not use a radio (so I was surprised to see the non-functional radio box in the latest DCS version). That said, after some extensive digging around, I found a way to use SRS with the I-16. Turns out, the instructions on how to set up any radio (similar to the FC3 modules) were in the SRS help menu. All you need to do is look up the name of the radio from the spreadsheet on the SRS site, create a plain text file named with that radio name, and add the comm frequencies. Then save the file to the "Simple Radio" folder in your SRS folder. For those who care, I'm attaching my file. Best, Doc SCR522.txt
  19. Flew my very first online sortie on this server a couple of days ago. I flew a MiG-15 and there was another MiG and two F-86s at the time. It was fun - the F-86 guys knew what they were doing and kept the fight up high. Once we got down low, it was relatively easy to latch on to them. Stupidly, I forgot to turn off the gun safety, so I missed several golden opportunities (though the guy I was chasing eventually blacked out and went in the drink). I don't have a video, but I do have a partial tacview if anyone cares... What I didn't care for was that the fight was essentially over the F-86s airbase, which meant they could re-spawn more quickly and didn't have to worry about running out of fuel. Obviously, that's a great strategy for the the F-86 team, but if the MiGs play the same game (which I certainly intend to do next time I log in), then two two teams would never meet. I would like to humbly suggest that players fly to the mid-point between the two airbases and patrol there, waiting for the other team to arrive if necessary. This will not only even things up in terms of respawn time and fuel consumption, but will also shorten the "boring" fly-to-the-fight time. Cheers! Doc
  20. Oh, I understand. Thanks!
  21. Can you guys add the I-16 to the aircraft selection. I love that little thing more than all the other warbirds in DCS...
  22. Thanks, Lange_666. SRS is the way to go, but it doesn't work for all aircraft and I feel awkward when people are talking to me and I can't reply.
